I was traveling to a part of Utah last year that was in the middle of a measles outbreak so I checked my vaccination status with an expert in Australia (ye olde homeland), and their advice was "get vaccinated".
I got onto the Kaiser online appointment system, and it asked me to input an international travel destination before it would issue an appointment. Of course it failed when I typed in Utah.

Trying to remember my Unix-ey/Linux experience timeline, it has gone roughly something like:
- Eunice on a VMS machine around 1985
- BSD on some sort of a mini hidden in a machine room around 1986
- System V on a DEC VAX at HCR in Toronto 1988
- SCO Unix (System V) on IBM PC clone hardware at SCO 1989
- Solaris on various Sun boxes at Sun in Mountain View 1994
- Red Hat at home around 1996
- Cygwin around 2000
- Various Linux distros through 2008
- Debian around 2010
- Fedora 2012-2024
- Ubuntu on the home server 2018
- WSL 1 on ye olde laptop
- Debian on ye olde laptop 2025
40 years!
Funny thing is emacs has always taken at least 5 seconds to start no matter the OS and hardware.

I was entering Zion National Park in Utah the other day, it was a long line. The group of four in front of me were interrogated by the park ranger if they were US residents. They said they weren't. She then pointed at this sign and informed them they'd have to produce $400 to enter the park.
They turned around and left, upset.

That wasn't the only monumental national change inflicted from above. Up until 1972 we'd been taught imperial units in school (inches, feet, yards, pints, gallons, ounces, pounds, stone, etc), and in 1972 we were told to forget all that nonsense because Australia was going metric.

It's odd that pointing out the irony of the Kirk quote “It’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God given rights" marks you as a critic of Charlie Kirk.
It's almost as though GOP/MAGA are trying to conjure false outrage from thin air so they can silence more critics.
BTW, 47,000 gun deaths in the US in 2023 isn't "some gun deaths". That's an entire medium sized town of gun deaths.

We got the full nuts and bolts sex-ed class in 8th grade in our working class suburban state school in Australia in the 70s.
There was a massive teacher shortage in Australia in the early 70s so Australia was offering generous relocation packages to qualified teachers from other countries. (This is how I encountered my first Americans!)
Our sex-ed teacher was Mrs Narayan, she had migrated from India, wore a beautiful saree, and had a bindi. We were a bunch of idiotic drooling white kids, needless to say we gave Mrs Narayan our hushed, full, and undivided attention as she patiently explained the ins, outs, up and downs, of human reproduction.

Other than the pure racism, the point of immigrant crackdowns (and Congress blocking immigration reform since Reagan) is to maintain a large highly exploitable labor force.
That's why ICE is hitting up day laborers at Home Depot parking lots and small Los Angeles businesses, and not, for example, shutting down the entire US meat and dairy industries which have relied on that exploitable labor for decades.

It might just be me, but I've found local TV news coverage of the LA fires to be mostly terrible. It's low on information and high on disaster porn/drama, and a fair bit of it has been wildly misleading. They cannot shake their bog standard reporting templates for this critical event.
- On-scene reporters asking people who are literally running around putting out spot fires at their house if they could stop for an interview.
- Picking through the ashes of houses and putting burnt photo albums and other destroyed personal items on camera.
- Certain helicopter reporters yelling mostly low information nonsense for half an hour.
- Obviously wholly unqualified opining on emergency response, and evacuations that has caused massive confusion (no, NBC4, all of LA isn't under a boil-water alert from the DWP).
There's an opportunity here for local TV news to be a useful asset for the community, and they're all too frequently blowing it.

That was my brief exposure to video game programming, and though Russ and Brian were awesome to work with, I knew that industry wasn't for me. The hours were brutal for the core team, and the industry itself was super tough to break into.

Oh wow, that's a blast from the past. I did the port of PO'ed from 3DO to Playstation in the mid-90s, it took me about five months from memory. I thought that game was long gone and forgotten.
The Wikipedia page doesn't quite match my recollection, though perhaps roles changed when I finished that contract. Russ Pflughaupt did all the fairly difficult 3D rendering code for the 3DO platform and Brian Yen was the primary artist.
The Sony Playstation dev platform was interesting. It was basically a Playstation on a PCI card with another sandwich card both plugged into a Windows PC. The dev environment was a bit crude, but got the job done. I dimly recall that Sony was using gcc for a compiler.

As much as I dislike musicals, I greatly enjoyed playing in the pit orchestra of the musical theater group in the super conservative Australian country town I lived in during high school. Those were the best folks in town, and just about my favorite times living there in the 70s.

Recently I looked at some SD cards written a decade ago and the jpegs on them are full of bit errors. (Everything on them was backed up back then.)
The most reliable backup medium I've found in the last 20 years has been redundant mechanical hard-drives.

When I finally got a job and could afford to buy records, I bought the 1986 Best of The Saints...on cassette. 🙂

Buried in para 17 or so of this whimsical NYT magazine piece on the failure of Congress to get rid of the frustrating US penny is an admission of the profoundly deep and intractable corruption that infests government at all levels in the United States.
You'd kinda hope the corruption angle was in para one, or even the headline.

...possibly related to the earlier decision by the lost hiker: "one member of their party was left to complete his final summit push alone".
You don't have to summit. You can always head back with your group, well aware they're going to be picking up their belongings as they head back down.
