you wouldn't have to, you can always copy the normal link if you're on a known non-malicious site. the copy clean link option is there for the malicious ones.

there's a subset of parameters that are basically never used for anything legitimate, so at the very least if you see source/ref/utm_something/fb_something/campaign/share or any of the *clid identifiers in an url it's safe enough to say that it's tracking and should be removed. that should be generic enough to account for a lot of them and break nothing while big websites could still get special treatment with patterns if they contain other removable parameters.

2026-10-30 19:47:37 UTC

- reply

it actually does, that's the first time i've seen it working. i guess it's more of a "copy clean link if you happen to be on one of these few big websites" option then.

2026-10-30 17:48:53 UTC

there's a "copy clean link" option on firefox-based browsers except it never works. ages ago it was enabled and it simply copied links as-is. now it's greyed out everywhere, what's the point?

if you install the whole texlive group from arch repos it comes out to 2.8 gigabytes, while the zstd-compressed downloads are roughly 1 gigabyte. among the packages there's some that compress quite well and some that don't but it averages out to a 0.37 compression ratio.

yes that's exactly what i'm talking about, 500mb for a thing that makes a pdf from a text file being considered minimal is insane, and then hope that you don't come upon a tex file that needs some extra features that aren't in the minimal install

2026-10-27 22:29:28 UTC

i hate how many things it needs as dependencies and then that's just for the basic features and before you realize it all the packages take up to a gigabyte or more, all just to make stuff from a plaintext file into a pdf file

2026-10-27 22:18:36 UTC

is there a typesetting system that doesn't suck?
- latex is massive and takes a long time to compile documents
- typst is owned by an llc and comes with a mess of rust dependencies
- groff's documentation sucks and it's hard to use non-default fonts
i just want to write stuff into a text file and then export that to a pdf, is that too much to ask for?

i personally don't like that everything "modern" has to be super rounded and have shitty gradients. they've been making everything rounder since like 2022, it's like they want to bring over mobile interaces to desktop. maybe by the time we hit firefox v200 the viewport itself will become a circle?

emerge doesn't do stuff in parallel which makes sense probably, since it usually builds stuff, but today i did a perl update on the gentoo machine and it was really slow while processing 50 virtual packages and it wasn't fun

i usually just use ext4 or xfs so i think the support might not be too bad, i'd be willing to give ufs (or whatever else bsds use) a try too. i'm mostly concerned about input method editors and web browsers.
it was a pain to get fcitx5 working on any point-release distro i used (in fact i'm convinced that they all ship a package that's broken) so i wonder if similar issues are going to be present on bsd systems. i should probably try that in a vm or something.
also it seems there's a lack of good browsers and i really don't want to fight with stock firefox, it often times doesn't respect user settings and some stuff is applied at launch right after updates before the user has the chance to turn it off. it's not exclusive to bsd, but at least on linux there's librewolf to make internet at least a bit bearable.

i was eyeing netbsd for quite a while, but i don't know how well it's going to fit my workflow. i think their kernel might be still good but even then, the userspace tools like most usable web browsers and many window managers and other tools are still slop. so even if we manage to escape what they did to the kernel, there's still a ton of damage done to the software ecosystem in general.

2026-08-24 07:19:26 UTC

- reply

isn't it going to get slopped up eventually? i feel like it might come at a later date as the version advances and the bleeding edge code get merged into lts, but i still consider the linux project tainted at this stage so unless lts gets substantially less slop for the indefinite future i don't think it's going to change my opinion too much

2026-08-24 05:17:46 UTC

well i have a gentoo vm now, that was cool, especially the part where you get a kernel and the fans were spinning for 90 minutes, but every other installation went super quick
it could be fun to daily drive but i don't really like lts kernels though so i'm not sure if i want to ditch arch… but openrc :comfymelt:

they should make a flatpak that doesn't suck:
- software would be managed outside of any containers and dependencies would be shared since that saves a ton of space and allows for quick updates
- software would be able to read into about fonts and themes because it's great for compatibility and user experience
- software would be installed into /usr/bin, following conventions, and would be callable directly from the shell
- if a dependency is needed, a program helps manage packages that provide them (we could call it a "package manager" or something like that)
- real people would audit the code and optimize it for the distro (we could call them "package maintainers")

hardware wizards of fedi, i have a question
on my old laptop, the 'p' key stopped working. not just the keycap itself, but the underlying key. even if i rip off the keycap and press on the rubber part, it never types anything. other keys work, more or less, at least they type.
this would be ok because i use the old laptop mostly as a server, but now it's bad because it's currently turned off and the luks password, the user password and root password all contain 'p' somewhere in them.
if i had graphics, i could copy a 'p' from somewhere and paste it. but i don't, the first password prompt (disk decryption) is in the ramdisk phase and the second (user login) is from a terminal, not a graphical display manager. as far as i know i don't have copying abilities in any of them.
does anyone know of a way of inputting a character at least once without physically pressing the key? i cannot unlock the disk; i cannot login; i cannot chroot because that requires unlocking the disk. there is no sshd running, i start services manually after booting up.
i know i can probably get a usb keyboard and plug it in and use that, but i don't really want to buy stuff unless i have to. is there any obscure and creative way of having a 'p' without the 'p' key?

the behavior itself is antisocial. partaking in it is forming the antisocial behavior further. violent videogames and fiction books aren't nearly on the same level. pretty much no one is playing counter strike or doom purely for the act of violence; and i haven't seen a mainstream game yet that would glorify sexual violence. some smaller games that did received negative reception and i think that's not surprising to anyone.
> said pedophile is almost certainly very aware of the problems involved with reality and is probably deliberately avoidant as a result
the correct course of action is finding a way to get rid of such thoughts and return to daily life. the first step to fixing a problem is admitting that you have a problem.
they might be avoidant as a response to minimizing the trigger of the thoughts. if they're not entertaining the idea of doing the deed then all's good and there's self-support groups for people like that.
addicted to socializing isn't said because it's usually seen as a positive thing. it's biologically required to some extent - even a person who doesn't like to socialize needs some amount human contact or else they will lose their marbles. "addicted" is usually a term with relations to negative dependencies, not positive ones (even when used informally in this context).
comparing a person being homosexual with a person watching media depicting sexualized murder and pedophilia doesn't make much sense to me. there's nothing wrong with the first one and something very deeply wrong with the second one. just because human brains are weird it doesn't mean that a person struggling with bad thoughts shouldn't attempt to control their thoughts. being gay is not a choice, having immoral thoughts isn't a choice either, but intentionally entertaining the immoral thoughts absolutely sounds like it is.

one should not do self-erasure and neither i am suggesting that one should. they should seek professional help and/or focus on productive things and self-improvement. one needs to realize that such urges are not to be acted upon and stop entertaining them in any capacity. people like to overestimate their self-control, entertaining evil "just a little bit" never ends well, it ends in a looping cycle that is harder to break out of. i refuse to write it up to neurodivergence, intentional indulgence in such thoughts is not normal at all for any individual.
i'm not a neuroscientist but if people do show addiction-like patterns in pornography consumption in general and not in cuddling then maybe they are not equivalent. we also do not have any in-setting possibilities of an alternate reality so people don't concern themselves too much with what-ifs. anyone finding eroguro fullfilling is genuinely concerning and disturbing to me. the underlying question is why - why would a sane individual find such ideas fulfilling? what kind of character traits would one have to find such a thing pleasant in any capacity?
i think most people would be concerned for their kids if they found out they have a pedophile in their living vicinity. they wouldn't be like "yeah, my neighbor is into lolicon, he might be fantasizing about it in real life, surely my kids will be safe around him". i don't see why such approach wouldn't be warranted for eroguro as well. giving an outlet is an acceptance of the practice, and getting off to guro or lolicon or rape should absolutely never be considered anywhere close to normal or accepted.

2026-05-14 20:40:09 UTC

- reply

that still doesn't really give a good reason why one would intentionally occupy their ideas and share media of something widely viewed as immoral. just like is the case with lolicon or noncensual media.
and due to addictive patters of pornography and behavior of one's brain craving an increasing amout of feel-good hormones it had when occupied with such thoughts i'd cast doubt on anyone claiming not to ever fantasize about it in a lifelike scenarios. they already crossed many moral lines by thinking about it in the first place and probably shouldn't be trusted with crossing more. the fact that fictional scenarios of abhorrent acts are met with any positive response is alarming enough. (the "you become what you feed your mind" image comes to my mind)

2026-05-14 20:19:06 UTC

- reply

but the thing is that we don't live in a world where anyone can consent to such practice. i'm sure many aspects of life would be different if moral norms were made with a fictional universe where you can do anything in mind.

2026-05-14 20:10:15 UTC

- reply

because if something is recognized as abhorrent, people reject it in reality and in fiction. the fact that someone intentionally indulges themselves in such ideas rightfully raises some eyebrows.
the sad part is that it's hard to get into such an agreement with others due to regulatory overreach. i see the issue in the imbalance of power and as a political issue; we shouldn't promote immorality because it sets a precedent to censor stuff, but rather work towards a world where we can safely reject what is wrong without it causing overreach.

2026-05-14 19:45:16 UTC

- reply

yeah, that sounds like it kinda sucks. i often end up using more tags and keywords when searching.
i don't like censorship but at the same time i think that as humans we have some moral guidelines of what is right and what is not. looking up and pleasuring oneself to a depiction of mutilated bodies is by far over what is and should ever be acceptable. i'm not in favor of government censorship or making it illegal but rather a heavy stigma associated with creating and platforming such media, similar to how most people agree that lolicon media shouldn't be platformed.

2026-05-14 19:17:53 UTC

- reply

that would be cool to see, i'm not all that familiar with danbooru's filtering system though. i'd perhaps prefer just a plain truthful tag and letting the user infer from the combination what is inside. i think the user might not always have a consensus with the uploader's interpretation of the tag.
but i'd argue heavily against including eroguro in such contexts, it's something that i think we shouldn't accomodate at all. there's clearly something very wrong with people who draw that kind of stuff and i'd be concerned for people who don't immediately blacklist such media from their node.

2026-05-14 18:38:09 UTC

- reply

it would probably require gathering a large list of media types that might be undesirable for people. for example one could want to let violent or horror media through but block everything that is sexual. but there's some people who would be okay with cartoonish or implied violence and only a specific type of sexual media and so on. but who would make such list? would we have tags like "this has blood in it" and "this has fire in it" and "this has fire in it but in a non-violent context" and so on to cover everything?

2026-05-14 18:26:15 UTC

- reply

one issue is that a "nsfw tag" encompasses many different reasons why that media might be marked as such and even if everyone tagged perfectly it's not possible to filter granularly and only see what one wants to see.
but a granular filtering is also problematic because you'd have tons of options to choose from, which will make people tag even less.

there's many ways a character can enjoy themselves that don't involve enjoying oneself in that specific way.
i don't find enjoyment when i want to look up something cute and the first 30 results are pornography. and there's even less enjoyment on my side when i remember that many of the characters commonly depicted are underage and that people are just okay with that.
so many times it's genuinely hard to find a nice fanart.

2026-05-14 17:49:39 UTC

actually now that i look at it, it's probably a case of a mirror unfucking itself
the second usable mirror has the new versions and the first one is behind, so i must have jumped from the second to first. the mirrorlist is from reflector, kept from the initial installation. however i don't use reflector on a live system since it's basically unmaintained from 2023, the developer disappeared and no one picked it up, i think `curl`ing archlinux.org/mirrorlist/all/ is the recommended way to get fresh ones nowdays but i never really had the need for that
the last update was on the 22nd, i might comment out the mirror if it keeps being stuck for longer

2026-04-24 22:29:48 UTC

i did checkupdates, got back a list of packages that can be updated.
later on i decided to run `sudo pacman --sync -yu` and there's nothing to be updated, not even the databases. checkupdates shows nothing anymore. the log doesn't have any updates because i didn't update and when i compare it to the arch website i can see that i'm on the old versions.
what is this? an attack? software jank? outdated mirrors? evil magic?

even if there are no blobs in source, i feel like a program flow that one does not understand (especially the abundance of crypto functions with 30-line ifdef chains and various variables with matrixes that one might not be familiar with) leaves enough room for something sketchy to be going on eventually. these projects are maintained but it's hard to say whether the maintainers are playing the long game. i'm not saying that bento4 is sus, it very well seems legitimate, but i can't be sure because of the complexity.
i could have a vm that receives data and then sends back the result, but if the program was malicious is there anything stopping the program from making the output malicious too? maybe it's a bit too paranoid but it seems like in a scenario where bento4/gpac were attempting malicious stuff, they could do something to malform the video into output that triggers when ffmpeg/mpv/vlc plays it. i guess that applies to any file online though, as i don't know how it was created.
for my use case the mp4box from gpac was enough as it can do decryption too. the documentation just kinda sucks.
i went to a mailing archive on debian when researching gpac and the consensus was "it's vulnerable, let's drop it", so no patent issues:

of course i'm not qualified enough either, so if someone jia-tanned the source then i'd not be able to notice. but maybe going through the source code for even a super slim chance is better than running it blindly, isn't it? if thousands of people glance at the source code a bit, one of them might catch something.
the bento4 library i mentioned (for mp4 file manipulation when ffmpeg failed) seems to include its structs from their own headers in the crypto part which would probably make patching the codebase extremely painful. maybe the crypto part is needed, since it does decryption schemas that ffmpeg can't seem to handle?
either way i did replace it with gpac which as far as i know is completely filled with vulnerabilities (and that's why it got dropped from some distros) but it did the job at least (i ran it in a live session, lol)
the syntax is awful and instead of arguments it reads data from an xml file so i did a few wrappers for that.
generally feels like any tool that touches video is a hot mess and ffmpeg might be the most user-friendly of them.

i mostly do the same, if a popular distro i would use uses the source then it's probably fine, otherwise i'll read the source myself. i checked some that were packaged just because they seemed like high-risk pieces of software but the software maintainer are likely doing a way better job and i obviously found nothing.
i'm wondering a bit how viable checking all the sources is though, because even after reading the full source i sometimes feel like i didn't understood it enough. for example bento4 took me several hours to read and contained a ton of cryptography so if something nasty was hiding there, jia tan style, how likely would i be to notice? it's so troublesome with tools that are complex, useful, but not popular enough for a capable maintainer to pick up.

i'm curious, fedi. when you're compiling software from outside your distribution's repos (so from codeberg, github, someone's personal site) do you always read the full source code for the program you're building?

that might be a part of the problem, but i remember the performance being unoptimal before making any modifications to the system.

i run my home services on bare metal - they don't all run all the time and those that do are quite lightweight - but sadly need a vm for some classes where we run specialized linux distros or are required to do stuff that compromises a system's security. so i don't need huge speeds but it's annoying when i find my vm stopped or when input lag is more than a second.

i might try to check out if something is causing too many writes but i doubt it. there's basically nothing running besides a window manager and it still feels bad to use. but maybe i just have too high expectations about what a virtual machine on a mid-range laptop should feel like.

oh, i am using kvm too or at least i believe it's set up correctly. it's "usable" but still very much an unpleasant experience.
i wondered at first if the vm stops itself because of dpms but that shouldn't be it because it's still on after the screen goes black and stopped even if the screen was on.

the host is arch linux with 16 gb of memory and 4 cores, hypervisor is qemu. an even worse experience was with ubuntu and virtualbox. i've never had a good experience with vms.

yes please, i want a system that does not work. yes, i'd like an underpowered machine that lags via ssh. i'd love some input lag too. please also make it run on a daemon that halts itself after 10 mins of usage. if possible, maybe add a kernel taint on the host too and permission errors at rumtime.

if i get a scam email i tend to reply from my dedicated mailbox and drag out the scam to get the banking/payment info and try to shut the scammer's account down, but it's getting increasingly rare that i get any cooperation from the bank. many times banks will only accept calls, or have their own custom forms that disallow anything besides letters and spaces, or don't accept messages beyond a specific character limit, or just don't accept anything at all. i'd say the success rate of actually getting a single message through is ~25% (that won't mean that the scammer's account will be taken down)
on the other hand, knowing which banks are hard to reach with abuse reports i also know which banks to use if you wanna scam someone.

the slow drive device is the third one i have, the slow rsync is the second one. my setup is probably confusing, but the one i'm downloading from with rsync has a good drive so that's not an issue.
i guess i'll start trying the rsync download while every other device is offline to check if that gets a better performance.

i don't think it's throttling because i do get regular speeds, but sometimes it drops to kilobytes or just lags altogether and then errors out. it's on the local network and i didn't set up any throttling. downloading via a http server works well enough, so i suspect it might be something with the ssh server.

2026-01-25 11:55:14 UTC

the locking is happening on the third device, not because of rsync, so it won't help much there. i already fixed it my simply making the necessary changes in tmpfs.
i could use partial, but i don't want unfinished files. i want it either to transfer or not. i know it will pick up again if i re-run rsync, but still i'd be rather that a file is not broken if it fails.
the problem seems to be on the system i'm downloading from (the second one, not the one that's locking up) - if i download to it then it's quite fast, but download from it is slow and often interrupts. the ssh session is also noticeably more laggy, so the problem very likely isn't in rsync.

i am also pushing files in a loop instead of all at once, so the drive becomes locked with all the dirty writes.
this is a disaster

2026-01-24 23:26:39 UTC

rsync is now super slow, the source device often disconnects and the download interrupts and the file is lost, another device that i will be pulling from is under constant load average of ~6 at 4 cores
this is a disaster

no one's getting raped on a public train, even on the evenings there's people around, and no one's starting a fight either. if anything, there's emergency signals basically everywhere.
