Our last blog post is from spring, and many new features released since then ... we are just too busy working on new features, and maximizing chat resilienence in the face of broken single servers. There are btw minimum 600 #chatmail relays world-wide. How do we know? We are going to tell you when this kind of counting does not work anymore, in a few weeks :)
WE DO NOT (WANT OR NEED TO) KNOW WHO USES DELTA CHAT AND RUNS CHATMAIL RELAYS, but occasional encouraging feedback is welcome :)

2026-10-15 12:19:30 UTC

Our forum will have a short downtime, and will then be reachable under https://forum.delta.chat instead of https://support.delta.chat :) (don't worry, both URLs will still work)

2026-10-06 20:38:09 UTC

#deltachat is made to be a reliable and resilient messenger for private groups, friends and family.
If you want to use it for joining or creating "public groups", please do yourself a favor, and create a dedicated "public profile" by tapping "create profile" and then use it to join public invite links like here on the fediverse, or on websites etc
Public groups with anonymous un-trusted or trolling members can cause problems. Worst case, you can then drop the public chat profile.

2026-09-30 16:11:53 UTC

There will be a short downtime on nine.testrun.org for maintenance reasons.

2026-09-22 07:45:31 UTC

Who ever is in the vicinity of Hannover in lower sachsony this coming Friday, is invited to consider joining one of our long-term contributors for an afternoon session on "the new and old internet" in the Auditorium at https://liminale.digital/
Likely in german language.

2026-08-18 19:32:14 UTC

We're flattered! @nprofile…7l2e, one of the oldest digital rights organizations in Germany, just recommended using #deltachat
They included a fantastic, well-structured article in German on how to get started, with lots of good background info for those who seek it. https://digitalcourage.de/digitale-selbstverteidigung/messenger

@nprofile…6ewq Sorry to hear comms broke down! You can add multipe relays (Settings - Advanced - add relay). This way the loss of a single server does not matter later and your chats (given your chat contact also does that) remain resilient against single server losses. next #deltachat #ios version is coming with #liquidglass 🥛 thanks Amzd for the work. though frustrating being forced by #bigtech to do things that may not be loved and feel superfluous, it's wanted by many meanwhile.
there are still some things to tweak, we created an issue at https://github.com/deltachat/deltachat-ios/issues/3157 . on-point help is welcome - and already ongoing thanks to some new contributors ❤️

@nprofile…u56u @nprofile…vcgd @nprofile…zjzz in fact, chatmail relays (https://chatmail.at/relays) run iroh relays. Iroh relays will proxy traffic when p2p can not be established, but there is no option right now to force relaying.

2026-06-17 08:44:26 UTC

Congratulations and shot out to our long-term collaborators from the @nprofile…zjzz project for releasing Iroh V1!
A major ugprade of the probably best Peer-to-Peer Rust networking library today:
https://www.iroh.computer/blog/v1
In case you missed it: When running apps like https://webxdc.org/#amzd-radio-station chat members joins in a realtime and private Peer-to-Peer network using Iroh, and can listen to music together. The media streams travel via gossipping Peer-to-Peer connections, a bit BitTorrent style.

@nprofile…9gvu a fresh email address used with deltachat (or more generally chatmail) clients is fine, and will benefit from encryption and metadata minimization. Push notifications will not work although some people managed to hack the relevant metadata-extension part of https://GitHub.com/chatmail/relay into their server setup.

@nprofile…qecs We actually also got a lot of people being thankful that they could remove messages they had sent to the wrong chat, sometimes with sensitive info. See also https://www.typing.com/br/articles/making-digital-mistakes
As to editing one's own messages, we didn't hear many complaints although in theory it could be problematic. Mostly it's used for typo-fixing and fixing some grammatical nonsense, or some inline web-link. #deltachat is meant for usage with somewhat trusted people, not unknown people who try to trick you.

2026-06-16 19:29:44 UTC

Telegram is an extreme security risk for its users, its developers and operators, holding data and metadata for over a billion people on central servers!
Our decentralized zero-metadata messaging approach is diametrically opposed to such big-platform designs https://delta.chat/en/2026-03-31-zero
But there is more: #chatmail relays are zero-state: you can wipe the relay's disks, create a new fresh setup, and users just continue chatting. Operators have actually done this. An *actually* state-less server :)

2026-06-15 17:01:27 UTC

The world-wide #chatmail relay network is growing in various wonderful ways. #freebsd joined the world-wide federated secure communication party and BSD cafe offers a public relay at https://chatamil.bsd.cafe :) Thanks @nprofile…vf35 @nprofile…3mtm and @nprofile…366x !

@nprofile…pnxz 1) yes 2) you can create a new profile with non-chatmail address and add chatmail relays later; if you really want, you can add non-chatmail addresses to existing profile via "dclogin:" QR code (https://webxdc.org/#dc09-dclogin) but this option is not exposed in the UI.

2026-06-13 15:29:54 UTC

It's hard these days to find a unifying description, or know about all the people and communities involved in #deltachat #chatmail #webxdc developments. One shared sentiment probably is wanting to develop anti-authoritarian technologies and cultures around it, and being opposed to authoritarian tech policy moves in the West, chat control, age verification, prescribing Google/Apple control, enforcing digital app use etc
It's also the reason we are only posting on the fediverse bridged to bsky.

2026-06-11 13:07:52 UTC

A note on "#deltachat is going proprietary with #chatmail relays":
1) It's all based on IETF standards, with configuration and custom integration code fully FOSS and documented at: https://chatmail.at/doc/relay/ with hundreds of permission-free deployments.
2) We know of several alternative relay implementations and deployments
3) Own servers or big email providers can be used (YMMV)
However it's fair to criticize our relentless focus on E2EE, and our moving away from email addresses as identity.

2026-06-11 11:04:12 UTC

here are the full release notes: https://github.com/deltachat/deltachat-android/releases/tag/v2.51.0 -- also a lot of bug fixes option cleanup, as we are continuing to make settings fail-safe and easy to understand for mass users, sometimes to the detriment of more nerdy configurations. However, contrary to some claims, using classic email server setups is fine, but you need to use a dedicated email address. Sharing an address with a different email client is not supported. If you have any issue, please report https://support.delta.chat

2026-06-09 10:50:13 UTC

2.51+ releases are rolling into stores: Video/Audio Calls and Channels are not experimental but part of the default feature set now 💫
Calls and channels are always end-to-end encrypted, and only you and your contacts know each other's identity and metadata (avatars, names, keys etc.)
For calls, Delta uses a minimal Rust WebRTC turn server https://github.com/chatmail/chatmail-turn#turn-server-for-chatmail-relays running on hundreds of relays worldwide. It helps to establish P2P media streams, or for relaying traffic if P2P connections fail.

@nprofile…e3gw The relay list should synchronize between the devices automatically. If this did not work, maybe try to add a relay from the other device and check if this is synchronized the other way round.
It is fine to try deleting the relay and trying again, but don't delete the first relay that is the only shared relay between the devices, they need at least one shared relay to be able to communicate and sync the relay list.

Reminder: There are no accounts in the classic sense anywhere with #chatmail or #deltachat.
It's all private profiles on end user devices which co-ordinate in a #p2p fashion. Chat profiles *use* email (relay) addresses for transporting messages through a federated e2ee-restricted SMTP network.
A chat profile or chat group has zero data on the server. It's radically different from classic email servers, Whatsapp, Signal, XMPP and Matrix servers which *define* and control chat identity.

The tale of "convenience" is a bit of a trick. A lot of corporate provided services maybe were somewhat convenient a decade ago, but they are now increasingly authoritarian, and people tend to ignore how much time they steal.
Total number of hours spent solving captchas or consent screens with #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc apps: 0 (zero). Nada. Zilch.
Compare with the estimated 819 million hours which humans spent with Google's recaptcha alone https://boingboing.net/2025/02/07/recaptcha-819-million-hours-of-wasted-human-time-and-billions-of-dollars-google-profit.html

@nprofile…7k5d We are doing our best but mistakes like a wrong link or a misleading link happen.
In the fediverse and support forum, we have otherwise linked to the security FAQ section many times.
What is likely missing more than refining the FAQ entry, is a comprehensive security paper, linking and putting the audits in context, and giving 10-15 pages of going into some details, threat models etc.

@nprofile…7k5d ups, thanks for pointing a bug in our home page! You are totally right to criticize that audits are not the same as security analysis.
The "audited end-to-end encryption" link should actually go to:
https://delta.chat/en/help#security-audits
It's also fixed on https://delta.chat now.
Status: there are 5 published independent audits and one published security analysis from the ETH Applied Crypto Group. There is another soon to be published audit, and more audits scheduled this year.

Good news among the bad news!
If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.
Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

We don't think any institution or state has the right to prevent families and friends from private chatting, physically or digitally. But the Cyber Authority China (CaC) seems to take offense:
- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china
- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays
- if you ask DeepSeek directly about Delta Chat, it doesn't want to talk
It's pretty sad, really. Everybody on this planet needs, and has a human right to private communication.

@nprofile…hgtw moreover, sending every image at native resolution would significantly increase data traffic, often by 10x to 100x. this can lead to rejected messages or filling up storages unexpectedly.
to protect ecosystem and recipient's data, sending an "original" file should be an intentional choice (if quality is paramount) per item rather than a global setting.

"it's always the receiver that determines the meaning of a message" is a famous opening quote at the first symposium on self organizing systems in Chicago, 1959. This and many other findings from those circles re-appear in our day to day discussions.
We are doing next steps towards automating planet-wide decentralized onboarding, including in Internet islands, without resorting to a central list of relays. Good news: we have now officially lost track of even the number of existing relays 😂

@nprofile…ty37 thanks for the pointer. we are indeed following rollout of formats as "Jpeg XL". while bigtech support has surged recently, we still have to support lots of older devices that don't support it natively yet and would require additional effort or have poor performance. for that reason, it's not a priority just now, but we’re keeping a close eye on it.

Making sure that deleted messages are actually deleted and unrecoverable is more involved than most folks think. The FBI could recently recover deleted Signal messages from an iOS phone because the notifications you see on your phone were stored in an extra database. Apple has now fixed this, also making #deltachat iOS users safer. Few know that so called "forward secrecy" is all about deleted messages becoming unrecoverable, see https://autocrypt2.org for our plans

#deltachat user profiles are private and invisible to the public. No one can discover you, or your children, via phone numbers or any other public handle. Chat profiles exist only on user devices. No PIN and no "SMS verification code" ever asked or needed.
The lack of "public discovery" also means you don't auto-discover others via phone numbers or other public handles. Getting in contact with others is "opt in": you scan a QR code or click an invite link to join a group or open a chat.

@nprofile…pqzv we strive towards making relay selection completely automatic, but for now we want to make sure it works at all, and smooth around the edges ;)

@nprofile…s63u If you add multiple relays to your profile and change between them, you will appear as the same contact, both in 1:1 and group chats. Internally since Delta Chat v2 all contacts in encrypted chats (the ones not marked with an envelope icon) are identified by their OpenPGP key, and it does not matter from which email address the message arrives, so when you switch to another address your contacts will likely not even notice unless they look in debug info.

@nprofile…s63u You can switch the sending relay at any time. If you send a message and sending gets stuck because the sending relay is not reachable, you can select another relay for sending and keep sending messages. There is no automatic "failover" yet.

@nprofile…e3gw Go to your existing profile. Settings. Advanced. Relays. And add a relay there.

@nprofile…e3gw the instructions were about adding a second relay. In the screen you posted you can just create a profile and then go to advanced settings.

@nprofile…e3gw Are you doing this on the phone or on desktop?
From Android, if you go to the second relay page (https://mehl.cloud/) and click on the QR code (with the "Einen kostenlosen Email-Account bekommen" alt text), this will open Delta Chat, possibly ask you to unlock the phone, and add a relay to the currently selected account.

2026-04-21 13:42:40 UTC

This morning nine.testrun.org was briefly unavailable, some network problem. A good time to remind everyone to add a second relay to your #deltachat app:
1. Go to https://chatmail.at/relays randomly choose one of the listed relay pages and copy the invitation code to your clipboard
2. In delta chat settings go to advanced/relays and tap "add relay" and paste the invitation code
3. That's it.
If one relay is unavailable you still can receive and send messages.

"Popularity is overrated" is an often occuring phrase in our circles. Which is of course nonsense because only what is popular, counts, right? Only what everybody else does is a valid choice, right? #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc are used in private places and communities that people are molding for themselves. We are just providing tools and approaches that work ... At least most of the time 😅 "Nothing works all the time" is another project mantra. Brb preparing the next releases :)

@nprofile…ns8p We responded to the top post as much as to yours, and actually seem to agree that when it comes to mass usage, users don't care about protocols much. Which doesn't mean they are unimportant, neither.

@nprofile…ns8p what do you mean with "delta chat advertising obsessed with protocol"? https://delta.chat/en/ and appstore description barely mention any protocol?

2026-04-13 08:14:27 UTC

Apart from the new #Gnome effort, there also is an interesting experiment of a #Rust terminal-client with #Ratatui -- for others to start from should they feel they need some enjoyable distraction :)
https://git.sakamoto.pl/j-g00da/deltarat-experiments
#Chatmail clients typically use the Rust core library which provides all networking, cryptography, persistence, real-time networking, mail relay/server interop. Documentation to help with writing clients is scattered, but at least there are plenty examples to learn from.

@nprofile…ns8p @nprofile…vcgd new protocols are fine. The point may rather be that contrary to popular nerd belief protocols are only one part of an effort. What distinguishes #deltachat from #xmpp is that one is a cross-platform mass-user focused app with a consistent UX across the platforms and using standards under the hood, while the other is a set of specs with many different implementations and UX approaches on the various platforms, and sometimes tenuous compatibility between them.

the public #chatmail relay list https://chatmail.at/relay covers about ~20% or so of chat relays we heart about and have traces or hints from, and we definitely don't see everything -- which is how it should be :)

2026-04-11 13:27:16 UTC

What if all public funding and all private donations to our efforts stop tomorrow?
Users should be fine for years thanks to the wonderful world-wide community of #chatmail relay operators 💜 Relays are dirt cheap to run. Also, our developments are much cheaper and less complex compared to what we know from comparable efforts.
No worries though!
We currently have moneys to help sustain ~15 contributors, with a sum similar to what other projects pay for their foundation president/CEO alone :)

@nprofile…mxfy true story: we regard German train rides and using wifi there as a good test bed for our networking code's ability to work in slow and malfunctioning networks. For example two travelling contributors messaged and established p2p realtime networking between two high speed running ICE trains, to test robustness and reconnection fitness :)

@nprofile…dysu @nprofile…4e7w thanks for the praise, much appreciated. we are indeed constantly working to improve and refine UX. We hear you but need to work with 1/100th of signal resources. Our last release contained two big cryptographic and network layer improvements but then also a lot of UI goodies. In this section, in particular, we try to remind the crypto/network enthusiasts among us about the importance of user interfacing https://delta.chat/en/2026-03-31-zero#at-risk-user-needs-1-availability-2-telegram-3-security

Do you want to live in a world where private digital communication is not possible anymore? That's a growing reality for many people world-wide.
Private communication is extremely important to salvage into the digital realm and it's not just about encryption, but about the ability to choose your own identities privately, without state sanctioning.
It needs caring for solving real problems, in real implementations, for real people, and not just some riding on grand ideas. Just saying :)

#deltachat contributors range from age 16 to 65, spanning diverse genders and even more countries and cultures. We have many discussions, and also conflicts but we usually don't carry those out in big public groups but rather go for 1:1s and generally small-group discussions. There is no central assembly or board that decides everything. It's more chaotic and admittedly hard to get an overview on, but thats' also how the yearly CCC congress comes about, which many of us regularly attend.

2026-04-08 17:28:43 UTC

First Signal, now WhatsApp is rolling out usernames -- to protect against the privacy leak of identifying phone numbers (except the tiny detail of phone numbers leaking to them).
#deltachat does not require a phone number, and you can have multiple chat profiles, and fluidly change your transport servers as time goes by. By separating message transport operations from chat apps, #chatmail is designed to prevent any point of central control, and provide resiliency.
