@Angle🖇 @Cy I mean, it’s already awful, just not for the reasons AI doomerists are thinking about. Which is kind of sobering in a way because if you ignore the simply fantastical exponential improvement claims, it can’t get that much worse than that.
Half of the first world is mesmerized by its output, including people who are making it, leading to suicides; a part of the third world is subjugated to cognito-hazards in order to improve it; and it’s blatant circular economy is due for a major market reckoning which will grind the world economy to a sudden stop. Like you said, it’s already taken over the world, just not in the glamorized fashion AI cultists are describing, so it can’t really get much worse than that.
I didn’t keep on reading Plan A propositions because I assume wrong priors will give wrong conclusions, but the time to do something about it is behind us. The US government, the only regulatory power to be able to do something about it has been captured by AI, again, not in the calculating manipulation fashion sci-fi authors have enjoyed describing rogue AI, just through unfettered greed and old-fashioned xenophobia. So we have two full years ahead of us where US companies will be free to do whatever they want, which is still trying to find a path to profit which these systems as they are cannot offer for structural reasons. And that flailing around will cause some more harm, but it will still be directed by humans.

@Angle🖇 I’m not saying this to somehow disparage AI systems. It’s a fact they were designed and trained to respond to prompts, it isn’t a philosophical mystery, it’s their entire reason for existence. For humans, it is less obvious, which is why some of us tend to favor the artificial certainty of religious mythology.
And yes, I’m concerned in general about AI systems, just not about them running amok for no reason. There’s always a human reason and a human delusion about what these systems would or wouldn’t do in the pursuit of the human prompt.

@Angle🖇 No, the anthropomorphizing is strong from the first sentence: "the idea of AI taking over the world". This is assigning intrinsic goals to AI systems that they currently don't have. They are prompt processors. And I would argue AI providers have already taken over the world using AI, just not in the way these profoundly misled people gush over at length. But the fact they are so taken with AI Doomerism is a clear sign of this happening. An entire cohort of the most educated people on the planet is currently losing their mind over what still is a fantasy in the current technological landscape that requires several assumption leaps that aren't guaranteed at all.
Interestingly, I still refuse to voluntarily interact with these natural-language-based systems in part because I'm culturally very close to this cohort and I don't trust myself not to succumb to the same misleading anthropomorphizing they are all guilty of. It isn't the first time in history either. Apparently zoology research on parrots has been stymied because we expected birds using human natural language to reason like humans as well, see: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/117373332856349825

And it makes perfect economical sense for them to do so.

A public retraction isn’t the only way someone can change opinions.
Still most people on this list deserve to be there, but when the offending activity is older, the legitimacy of the inclusion fades especially in comparison with the author own past behavior.

This response could (and probably should) be used in a media studies textbook as a litmus test to detect AI-generated text from a prompt. That or they asked someone who's really proficient in English but has been living in a dark room for the past 20 years.
The fact that some people welcomed this tepid official response is both sad and an indictment of a significant media illiteracy even among privacy-valuing people.

Vincent Lapierre's channel should never have been part of our affiliate and sponsorship program, because we intentionally avoid association with channels whose content could distract from our message and divide our community.
Proton operates globally, and while our services are available to everyone regardless of political views and our mission is consistent everywhere, our knowledge of every local media landscape is not. In this case, our team didn't have enough context about the French space to make a well-informed decision, and that's on us.
We also want to be straight about what a placement like this is and isn't. An affiliate or sponsorship arrangement is a transactional placement for awareness, not an endorsement of a creator's views. In the case of Vincent Lapierre, this was a single video sponsorship, not a partnership.
But that distinction doesn't excuse what happened here. The responsibility to vet who we put our name next to is ours, and we didn't meet it this time. We're now reviewing our vetting process and our guidelines for our marketing agencies to ensure this doesn't happen again.
If you see something like this again, tell us. We rely on your feedback and vigilance."[/img][/share]

One of the reasons tennis was segregated is that the best women were beating less-than-best men. This was seen as a threat to the misconception about gendered bodies exactly as you stated it, so segregation was introduced by men to enforce this lie against a more nuanced reality.
That the strongest man will probably be stronger than the strongest woman doesn’t mean all men are stronger than all women, and yet this is what the IOC, several sporting bodies, and you have chosen to believe and unjustly enforce.

The 50,000 population threshold applies to the larger community served by institutions. For universities, this means more than their immediate enrolled students, and with a population of about 1.1 million people in the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area, the University of Buffalo would qualify for the ADA requirement.
Now, the way they are doing the compliance rollout may not be the best. For example, it's possible to grandfather content that wasn't previously required to be accessible behind a password. Their timeline also seems pretty tight, if in the Spring of 2025 you weren't required to submit accessible material for your class, with a deadline set in April 2026.
But the ADA population requirement isn't in question in this case.

The lower it is, the shorter DNS servers will keep these directives in cache. When you're preparing to move registrar, lowering TTL in advance may make this move snappier as DNS servers will invalidate their cache sooner and request new data from the new registrar.
However, this is only relevant if the directives themselves are changing. If you're just moving your zone file from a registrar to another, it isn't as important as the DNS data will remain the same no matter who serves it. If you were moving hosting rather than registrar, it would be more important for example.

What struck me about the Atlantic editor being included in a Signal group chat about a bombing mission in Yemen isn’t the less-than-tight OPSEC, but rather the self-reinforcing propaganda even among top officials when Europe briefly catch a couple strays during the conversation. @𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮 Aha, that's the other thing Apple Music doesn't do, Last.fm integration! Again, nobody at Apple ever used it.

2024-12-16 16:49:13 UTC

I'm not sure anyone at Apple ever actually used Apple Music. My use case is the following:
- I start a radio, mixing songs I added to my library with related songs
- A song I don't have in my library plays, and I happen to like it enough to want to add the song to my library.
- Too bad, the song ended and the radio moved to the next song. The previous button is greyed out, there's no playlist page for this radio, and there's no Listening History available.
I'm absolutely confused by this behavior. Is it a licensing thing where songs can be played as part of a radio for cheaper than if they are presented in an actual playlist, even if it's automatically generated?

After 67 hours of play time and several more watching playthrough and tutorial videos of Oxygen Not Included (2019), I threw the towel again just before getting into space. Getting a near-sustainable base going was nerve-wracking enough, and I've sadly hit my cognitive limit regarding the planning involved in rocketry.
Despite this second abrupt ending, I'm still somewhat proud I finally managed to get to this stage of the game, but it did cost me pretty dearly IRL in terms of obsession-fueled late nights, and it confirmed to me that I'm definitely an implementor and not a designer.

My partner regularly receives similar Request For Proposals (RFP), so she created template responses that she validated with Legal in order to speed up the processing of RFP forms. Now her boss is suggesting her to use a custom ChatGPT integration fed with these template responses in order to ask the chatbot to regurgitate them later, in a form that needs to be vetted by Legal again, before filling in the same RFP forms. In order to "improve efficiency". 🤯
Now, I do get why unscrupulous bosses want to use AI to commodify intellectual work. I despise it, but I get it, it makes sense to me, even if every fiber of my being is against it. On the other hand, I don't understand this particular use other than ChatGPT being a hammer and everything is made into nails. This leads me to believe that the core market of OpenAI is simply stupid people wooed by a chatbot that sounds smarter than they are. It's brilliant, the scaling potential is infinite!

In the Bedford-Stuysevant neighborhood of #Brooklyn, close to the Tompkins Ave-Hancock St intersection lives the so-called “Bed Stuy Aquarium”. Born out of a leaky fire hydrant and an unfinished sidewalk, this tiny pond is now the home of several goldfish.
This ad hoc installation even has a Linktree page: https://linktr.ee/bedstuyaquarium

@wakest ⁂ Friendica uses the summary field as a subject to group private conversations the same way email does it.
However it seems to be handling empty subject fields at the se ding end, replacing it by the “[no subject]” string rather than at the receiving end.
