✊ Time to resist data centres ✊
The @nprofile…ktvf discussion paper brings out three topics that are highly relevant as a movement against data centres is forming:
🔗 Data centre resistance should include resistance to "AI" (they are linked at multiple levels)
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 This resistance is relevant for many: fighting for climate and social justice and against fascism and militarisation
🎇 Being civil and obedient won't be enough - our strategies need to be more diverse

“Given all the powerful tools we have now, we’re doing very little with them. A lack of tools and websites is not the problem. But also, the goal is not to just have unbreakable cryptography or unblockable websites. The goal is to change our material conditions. To change society. To change the world. Tools might help us along the way, but also they might not. They might be a distraction. […] We have to get out there and make the change.”

Unexpected good news from Hungary: a wealth tax starting at around €3m (only 1% so far, with 1.5% from €300m).
This was only possible because all the rich people had become so closely intertwined with Orban over 16 years, so their counter-lobbying didn’t work.
Obviously, the tax rate is way to small (only slowing the rate at which inequality is increasing), but if that’s what a conservative government does, progressive ones should be able to go much higher.

When people tell me that they share my political views, but that “writing anticapitalism on the cover of a book means one will not be taken seriously anymore” (hinting at the subtitle of the book by @nprofile…5ekp and me)…that says a lot about how much they hide their political views out of fear.
For me, the book was my anticapitalist coming-out and I know that fear…but I wish more people came out so we could confront the fear and the redscare bs together.
Every empire falls.

Excellent keynote by @nprofile…0gnk and Helen Pritchard at #aiconference2026 at the ZUG. They criticise the loss of imagination through cloud and “AI”, entrenching cloud as a mode of production. They call to counter the abstraction of damage (eg by avoiding energy production as a service mediated by Big Tech), to de-operationalise science (eg by keeping physics-based models for IPCC) and to de-militarise infrastructures in order to envision another way of living together.

Transparency is never enough!
A lot of people are putting so much energy right now into transparency - of data centres’ water and energy needs, of lobbying efforts, of “AI” development.
That is a useful first step. But let’s not only watch in more detail how things become worse. We need to already think about what to do with transparency - to gain control and change path. Just demanding transparency is completely harmless for those in power.

Red scare has returned to German media: Berlin has apparently been taken over by radical leftists who want to do extreme stuff like implementing results from referendums. What's next? Give housing to homeless people? Money for schools to keep toilets clean and working?
German media and centrists know where this ends. I will see you in the bread line, folks./i

I am so glad about the efforts to preserve the noblogs contents on nublogs.org (previoussite.nublogs.org).
But it is also important to recognise that essentially all larger NGOs I spoke to (can't name names) said they stay silent on A/I because
a) their US colleagues would not allow them to speak up
b) they are concerned about their funding
(Article 19 was a welcome exception)
NGOs are not my favourite driver of societal change, but most are also unwilling to be a bulwark against fascism.

Toller Kommentar von @nprofile…n9ku zu A/I:

https://background.tagesspiegel.de/digitalisierung-und-ki/briefing/gegen-abhaengigkeiten-braucht-es-mehr-solidaritaet-statt-abgrenzung

You can’t make this up: Openness meets transhumanism…for open transhumanism?
Brain research is so sensitive that we *really* need to make sure it does not go down the transhumanist, posthumanist and also eugenic route that a lot of tech research is following.
The last thing we want are OPEN brain-computer interfaces. Don’t open up our brains to tech oligarchs (who are set to win the openness game).

"AI" automates inequality: https://www.structural-integrity.eu/ai-is-automated-inequality/
While we are busy debunking the claim of tech CEOs, there is very little analysis of how "AI" distributes from the bottom to the top:
- at the community level: more data centres in poorer areas
- at the firm level: less bargaining power for workers
- at the international level: financial profits for investors, externalised costs for everyone else.
If we care about equality, we ought to push back against "AI".

The Luddites were not the first to refuse technology - the ancient Greeks and medieval Christians did so much before. Thomas Dekeyser's awesome book "Techno-Negative" uses that history to make the violence in liberal humanism explicit. This also applies to how we deal with "AI".
Technology is not progress and it was never linear. An extremely thought-provoking book that got me pondering humanism (in e.g. Hannah Arendt and Langdon Winner). Open-source software may be less bad than proprietary software, but it is also co-opted by big tech, follows proprietary design paradigms & is produced under similar conditions: extractivist, white, male and undemocratic.
The role of open source in digital is very much like that of the electric car in mobility. The Tech Sovereignty Package is largely about CREATING DEMAND for "AI", data centres and chips. This is most blunt in the Chips Act 2.0: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/chips-act-2
If there was still any doubt: It is not just the Big Tech companies wanting to push "AI" and data centres down our throats. The European Commission is fully onboard, as long as "Europe" (aka European companies) gets a small slice of the pie.

We should be *less* outraged about *individuals* as despicable as Musk.
We should be *more* outraged about *a system* that gives people like Musk almost unlimited powers (money and political influence), mainstream media that continues to frame them as visionaries for our common future even after their appetite for violence and destruction is clear and proven, and governments who depend on and crave their goodwill and products.
They should be outcasts, not put at the centre of our societies.

I don't get the hype around "small AI".
If it is based on specific datasets, local, even deterministic - that sounds like a traditional algorithm to me.
Calling all tech "AI" is making it harder to talk about the harms of the large stochastic models.
Resisting "AI" does not mean to resist all tech. It means asking what kind of digital infrastructures we want - and rejecting vast extractivist data centres, stolen data and automated inequality while evading accountability as part of the answer.

2026-05-05 16:50:31 UTC

@nprofile…tk8a has a great rant on the absurd cognitive dissonance people are getting used to… we *know* that “AI” isn’t the future, companies are burning the planet, the US is a global bully etc etc
Scandalising and debunking become pointless.
What I do not agree with is his conclusion: “One day I hope things will get better. And in the meantime, it is them that are wrong, and not you.”
Things do not just get better. Someone has to change them. Us.

"AI" is a huge redistribution scheme from the bottom to the top. It pays off for the billionaires no matter how big the bubble is. All we can do is limit the damage.
Pointing out the lack of profitability of "AI" products is pretty much meaningless. Investors have been speaking about this for years WHILE making billions from their investments into "AI". It is profitable for them, and that is what they care about.

Digital sovereignty: The battle between US big business and EU big business – and why opposition is just fine
A short 🧵
Manoeuvring the debate around digital sovereignty is such a minefield because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend” just does not hold at all. The lobbying battle in Brussels is intensifying right now because a lot of money for European cloud is on the table. But I fear most of it will further entrench problems - every though in different ways.

Rebuilding leftist movements in Hungary will hopefully be easier under Magyar. But it is not a no-brainer and it will take a lot of time and resources. The coalition with Tisza reached its objective of ousting Orban.
Now it is time to build up a meaningful leftist alternative and keep Tisza in check as much as possible.
So to all of the "EU friends" here: Don't embrace Magyar. Just because he is your enemy's enemy, that does not make him your friend.

2026-04-13 06:20:09 UTC

Yes, we should all celebrate Orban leaving office. It is a victory in the fight against autocrats - where Orban was a weird ally of the US AND Russia AND China.
But: This has come at a huge cost for any progressive movements in Hungary. Parliament is now run EXCLUSIVELY by right-wing, anti-migration parties. Leftists voted for Magyar to get rid of Orban.
Magyar will be an easier partner for EU institutions (also increasingly anti-migration). He is no ally for the left.

What so-called "AI" is not and will never be:
- ethical
- explainable
- safe
- democratic
- good
- in the public interest
- transformative
- emancipatory
Please add to the list, I am sure I have forgotten some of the "feel-good" labels.
I am so fed up with people who insist on their illusions, who insist on [fill in] "AI" while refusing to talk about substance, about how "AI" works and the impact it has.

I strongly disagree. Wanting to “regulate AI” is to legitimise the existence of “AI”. That is not what I understand as refusal or resistance.

What are good examples of concrete acts of resistance against "AI"? I am putting together an overview and am surely missing great stuff!
I have:
Data centre opposition (thx to @nprofile…00mz )
Examples of sabotage from @nprofile…7q65
Some ideas about practical refusal from @nprofile…fqvy
Also everyday acts are great (such as not following orders to use "AI") if they are documented somewhere, somehow. Most references tend to be rather vague (e.g. in this otherwise great article

My demand for 8/3: Scrap that anti-feminist propaganda machine called genAI! It generates misogynist slop even in the hands of those declaring to want the opposite.
The German ministry for research @nprofile…8f03 just published a paper depicting female researchers in history who have been distorted to conform to gender norms - even with explicit prompts for smiles and dancing. But even without such prompts genAI reproduces and reinforces female oppression.

Better than open-source: being specific about the causes you support!
The organising project Zetkin shows how to do this:
"@nprofile…nh7e’s mission is to work towards radical change of society in a socialist, feminist, antiracist and sustainabile direction. To be able to use Zetkin, your organization’s work must be compatible with this goal. If you are unsure, please contact us!"

Unspecific openness is a trap that reinforces current inequalities and dependencies.

It seems to take people (in particular fellow Europeans) so long to let go of what have always been myths: “transatlantic partnership for democracy” (always a lie) “US as global police for the rule of law” (read: use force to extort economic benefits) and “we stand up for European values” (only if they serve us economically).
The mask has been off for a while (deportations, army in the interior, DOGE…), Venezuela is another step in the very same direction.
