The second conference has already started and there has still been no public response from the ATypI board. No matter how badly your typeface/AI thing/book/research/etc. needs exposure, please don’t submit a proposal, sponsor, or buy tickets to any more ATypI events until the board fully discloses how and why it decided to be complicit (not ”neutral“) in Russia‘s war against Ukraine. #boycottatypi

My dog Rex died yesterday. I thought we could save him, but we failed. For months, maybe longer, he couldn’t breathe well and the problem wouldn’t have gone away, probably, even with surgery. He was still at home three days ago, despite his problems, and seemed so full of life. He didn’t even live to be four. His last two days were terrible and not how any life should ever end. I thought we’d have more time.

Someone who played a very influential role in my life during my teenage years passed away yesterday. Among many other things, he taught me Photoshop, Aldus PageMaker, QuarkXPress. Really so much more than that. I last saw him in person 24 years ago and contact after that was very sporadic. But there was no reason I couldn’t have called or e-mailed him. That’s all too late now. Perhaps the first edition of the Declaration of Independence, according to Gettysburg College, was printed in German!
Two copies of Steiner and Cist’s Unabhängigkeitserklärung survive. Aside from Gettysburg College’s copy, the German Historical Museum in Berlin also has one in its collection – that is currently on exhibit again, until early August.
Steiner and Cist’s shop was located in Philadelphia, on Second Street. The types used for the broadsheet all came to Pennsylvania from the Luther Foundry in Frankfurt, though not all of the designs originated there. It is not clear whether the physical fonts Steiner and Cist had been cast in Frankfurt or by Sauer in Germantown with Luther matrices.

@nprofile…saqv … Of course, the exact letter shapes for any medium are not not the same today as they were in the 1960s. @nprofile…saqv I wrote this about its first version about a year ago, but left a lot out. The immediate DIN 1451 was DIN 16, a slanted system of standardized lettering. The DIN 1451 standard has changed significantly over the last century. Even after the typographic variant was dropped in v2, the standard still showed two completely different lettering styles, one three-width monolinear system, which looked exactly like the discarded fonts … https://www.peacham.co/journal/the-akzidenz-grotesk-youve-never-seen

@nprofile…rz2j halbfett was, at least for a long time, the term for what was called bold in English. Fett was twice as heavy as that, so Fett was similar to Heavy of Black. The regular weights of most families had no designation. They were just the typeface. A lighter than normal weight was called mager. There are some specimens that translated these terms into English badly, which I suspect is the source of the problem today.

The @nprofile…a4zj just uploaded its digitization of a specimen for Ramses, a serif typeface designed by Hermann Delitsch for Julius Klinkhardt around 1912. The specimen’s title page features a stylized ornament that depicts Pharaoh Ramesses II. I instantly recognized it! H. Berthold AG acquired Klinkhardt after WWI, and Joseph Tscherkassy – a Ukrainian-Jewish former typefounder who fled to Berlin during WWI – reused it on a page from his 1924 specimen of H. Berthold AG’s Hebrew and Yiddish typefaces. I instantly recognized it from that catalog. In some quarters, it is considered the most beautiful metal type specimen ever printed.

The German state of Hessen introduced a new logo. The shield/coat of arms/etc. in use since 2004 has been replaced with a retro-futuristic design take on the 1919 design from Otto Hupp. This is an odd choice, as the state’s current borders are different from those a century ago. I’m a bit sad that none of the press materials mention Hupp, either, who was the foremost German heraldic designer of his time, and his work is still in use elsewhere today (e.g., Bavaria’s arms). https://hessen.de/erleben/corporate-design/neues-gewand

@nprofile…ref9 Even though casting machines are flexible, several 20th century German foundries had separate matrices for Didot and Pica system casting, although that must not have been strictly necessary (?).

2026-02-26 10:38:49 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ref9 I think it depends on the period but, generally, I assume that every founder already had size-specific moulds. So they would have likely bout strikes from punchcutters/other founders, allowing them to justify the strikes into matrices that would fit into their moulds. Strikes are just unfinished matrices.

2026-02-26 10:36:00 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ref9 By casting machines, I meant the casting machines used to cast foundry type, developed in and after the 19th century. Certain for automatic type casters (Komplettgießmaschinen), it is the person casting who determines the width of the sort, rather than the matrix or the machine.

2026-02-26 10:31:35 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ref9 But more often, type from say … Garamond would have looked different in each foundry casting it, because each foundry would presumably justified his strikes differently. So the moulds would be different but so would the matrices, even though all the cast sorts came from the same punch.

2026-02-26 10:29:09 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ref9 I am not sure if two molds from separate places would have cast identical results based on the same matrix. Though I am quite intrigued by the question.

2026-02-26 10:28:01 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ref9 Moulds were built to be size specific. The width of the sort to be cast was determined by the build of the mould and the width of the body of the matrix itself (not the impression strikes into it).

2026-02-26 10:26:03 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ref9 If you mean a hand-casting mound, then yes, sort of. How the matrix is justified plays a role, too though.
But in many typecasting machines, the answer is definitely no. There, it is the casting person who defines the body, by adjusting the machine until the sorts it casts match a reference sort. No the machine itself, or the matrix.

@nprofile…f27x It is difficult to send packages to the US now, because of new tariffs on imports whose value is less than $800. I believe La Poste currently only accepts packages that are *gifts* with a value worth less than $100.

@nprofile…z3qx @nprofile…pqxh @nprofile…unvw I have a Linotype catalog where the typeface is included. The 1980s Linotype catalogs don’t show the typefaces at notable sizes, though.

@nprofile…36n0 G&D partially funds the Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig! I can’t recall, but there might be a small bit of information on that large firm in the permanent exhibition.

@nprofile…8kr9 @nprofile…y3n4 My accountant can tell you how many EU books I bought and paid taxes on per year

@nprofile…8kr9 @nprofile…y3n4 Before this nonsense, books could be imported into Germany for free if their cost plus shipping was less than a specific value (about €100?). As if my imports of small run design books and used type specimens hurt the EU book market!

@nprofile…y3n4 A copy that was sent to me a year or so ago was never delivered. I‘m sad to say that, since the new EU tariffs went into effect on the summer of 2021, less than half (!!!) of packages sent to me from the UK ever arrive, and when they do, I have to pay a tax and a delivery carrier fee, even for things I did not purchase.

@nprofile…06lu @nprofile…tnt4 This is just because I haven’t edited any settings for my iPhone camera app 😭 The curves are actually smooth and the book was printed via offset printing. Now I just have to figure out how to take more accurate photos …

@nprofile…tnt4 @nprofile…kwrc It is from Ernst Klett and is custom, I since found. I wonder if I can find out who made them.

@nprofile…pqxh @nprofile…tnt4 I just found a PDF! It is from Ernst Klett Verlag. The font’s name is completely custom but I don’t know how did it. They also have some customized Polo and Sassoon fonts in the same document (not pictured).

@nprofile…tnt4 Can you recognize this font from a German elementary school textbook?

@nprofile…4elj Hello! Yes, I have designed three issues by now. The yearbook’s digital archive is moving and I don’t know how accessible the articles currently are. However, I have all of the physical issues going back to 1925/26, and we have them at work, too. Please email me a list of the articles you are looking for.

Azimut is a series of three interrelated fonts designed as part of the city of Strasbourg’s term as UNESCO World Book Capital in 2024. The typeface is the work of three fabulous designers: Benjamin Blaess, Mathieu Réguer and Julien Priez.
The fonts are available for free download and it was very pleased to be asked me to write an accompanying text. Check the whole project out here!
