My new board game seems to work. I’m away from my PC for a couple of weeks but will make a public release after I get back. (Patrons can get it now though <3)

@nprofile…40fq that is basically it, though like I say in the tips: it's not supposed to be harmful - if you can't find a way to safely be bored then the method isn't for you (at least, not without some customisation!)

Did I come up with this while procrastinating? - Of course I did. :p
Did I come up with it because pomodoro doesn't work for me and when I tried it I had a meltdown?
Sure, but it's not actually an alternative to that kind of thing. It's a method for getting started and building momentum, it's not for trying to make a routine or regulate focus.
anyway if it helps then it helps, if not then ignore it. It helps me a bit so I'm sharing.

2026-07-27 12:24:29 UTC

If you struggle with getting started doing stuff, as I do, this might help.
I came up with this "bore/chore" method which is basically "Set aside time, use it to either do the thing or be bored".
A key part of it is that if it's not working halfway through the time, you can bail to do whatever and try again later. It's not sure-fire for me, but considering I have AuDHD and struggle with demand avoidance - that it helps at all is not nothing!

also makes me wonder if different people with tics have different parts of their brain that trigger the tic - it would explain why say only a small percentage of people have coprolalia, or even just the general diversity of tics people do have.
though also, why the fuck do some change over time and others don't? how do some go away and then come back? What the hell is going on in my brain????
I really ought to look into the neurology but as I already said - it's too hot (like your mum :p)

2026-07-12 15:48:34 UTC

- reply

it must be revealing something about my neurology wrt language processing.
Like, I don't consciously process grammar of the vast majority of things I say, so perhaps there is part of my brain that can get a concept shot into it, and formatted English vocalisations come out?
I would have assumed tic origins were like, closer to where mouth/muscle/actions are processed and further from thoughts/concepts but I suppose if that were true suppression wouldn't ever work.

2026-07-12 15:41:14 UTC

it's too hot to work and I'm stuck thinking about my tics... why do some follow grammar rules? It makes no sense but they do.
Case in point, one I've had for a while now is following up a statement or thought (or silence) with "So's your mum".
egs:
"It's hot - So's your mum"
"I'm tired - So's your mum"
but the tic grammar often changes to match the statement,
"This sucks - So does your mum"
"I liked that - So did your mum"
It shouldn't make sense for ticced sentences to make sense!

honestly suuuuuuucks to spend days troubleshooting how actions/slots/animation data is organised between different objects in blender (and how it's exported) when this is only for prototyping animations. Should have taken an hour at most, but instead I needed to go old-school and learn some esoteric blender nature and after all that... now my model moves half a meter to the right *after* I export it. I'm not sure why!

2026-07-11 18:08:29 UTC

I've been using Blender for almost a quarter of a century and it has come SO far in that time. Its UX and general workflow used to be a complete joke but now it seems like all the unwieldy nonsense has been straightened out...
OR SO I THOUGHT!
This past week I decided what I needed was shape keys for a mesh to animate as part of multiple armature actions. My advice is DO NOT TRY THIS.
In the end I have drivers of armature bones changing shape key values. You know, like a 2000s character rig.

a fun fact about *this* port is AFAIK it's literally the only one to ever have existed.
even official Lemmings games will use a different font for everything except the title, which I assume is normally just grabbed from some brand asset that an artist may tweak occasionally.
I'm certainly not the only person who has wanted it as a font, but I'm probably the only one foolish enough to try and make it.

2026-06-26 14:53:31 UTC

- reply

I'm also working on another Lemmings port btw, the title font! As of today I have all the lower-case alphabet blocked out!
it's a surprising amount of work, and is going to take A LOT of tweaking to balance. There are very very few characters to reference so I have to do a bunch of "how would the original illustrator approach *this* letter?" - and then realise even a bunch of the original glyphs won't work as part of a coherent font.
All that said, it's nice to build it up a little at a time!

wow that makes no sense without context, am I usually so incoherent?
anyway it's not a challenging project at this point, I don't need to think much once I'm focused, I can do it even when the heat is fairly distracting. My main project is at a stage where it takes 100% brain. Too hot = avoid main project.
Somehow I don't think I'm being more clear...

What I assume is a robot emailed to ask me for the sales figures for Sophie's Dice. Automailers don't get that info, but I was curious myself and it's not a secret so here it is! In the 7 years (I think?) since it launched:
10.4k sales
~$40k/£30k gross
That's not counting returns, taxes, store/transfer fees, etc. I haven't checked the net because my accounts aren't that organised but I assume I actually received 30-40% less

2026-06-16 10:39:52 UTC

Went to the optician today and was FULLY mute throughout. A funny thing about interactions in those circumstances is people are a lot more supportive.
"You're doing SO well!" is something nobody ever says when I'm masking better.
Anyway I've come to the conclusion that we should be more encouraging to literally everyone for getting through basic stuff. It's not condescending, I think we could all use the motivational bump.

The downside to this particular d4 shape is that half of the time the face you want to read will be pointed away from you.
But I'm not going to pretend that is somehow more inconvenient than reading a regular d4.

It is the same tetrahedron you find in this particular honeycomb tiling: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetragonal_disphenoid_honeycomb
To get it, take two opposite edges and just pull them apart until you have a couple of right-angles.

2026-06-11 13:38:08 UTC

FUN FACT! This tetrahedron makes for a d4 where the number you read is always upright. It's fair (face-transitive), and as a bonus - it tiles 3D space!

also not exactly related but of note, in the post I say "transsexual" instead of "transgender".
When I first came out I didn't even know the word transgender, and I'm not sure if anyone had even used "trans" to refer to people at all. I'm OLD.
At the time of this post I think I had developed a distinction of transsexuality as a specific kind of transgender? Now though - "trans" is enough. I'm a gender rebel. My gender identity is "eh I forget today"

and something that has definitely changed:
"I wouldn't wish it on anyone"
nope, everyone should be trans!
ESPECIALLY the people that don't want it. (This take is somewhat problematic, but I'm allowed to have it)

There is a lot more representation of trans joy these days, but also the transphobia is a lot more... well, MORE. Especially institutionally.
I hope that even with the greater focus of people trying to crush us, young folk facing their own trans struggles at least find a true sense of hope more easily. We still need to fight for our happiness but it is real, it's not impossible.

A lot of the experience I hated was the dysphoria, which was SO overwhelming for me. The existence in my body was painful, was that society's fault too?
YES.
Nobody fucking gave me any hope that it could be healed. That I could love my body on my own terms. That actually, gender-affirmation and hormones would solve almost every single thing I disliked about my body. I wallowed in despair because that's how transphobic society wanted it. It was by design.

2026-04-17 20:15:24 UTC

This is from a 2014 post. I was writing a character to represent me, and asked myself why I hadn't made the character trans.
Anyway I'm looking back on this part in particular and... I'm so glad I don't feel this way anymore. Being trans is awesome, I love my trans self.
Transphobic society is what is awful, and the reason I hated being myself was because that society had convinced me I could never be good.
Fuck that! I rule!

@nprofile…2y8k there's gonna be a button on the main menu, in steam it'll open the DLC in the steam overlay, on itch/elsewhere it lists features & screens :)

2026-04-04 15:38:22 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…2y8k The game itself will be totally free but some extra features will be paid DLC (customisable styles, viewing your solve statistics, and an included strategy guide).
Free for anyone to play, and people who want to support get a bit extra :)
The answer to "why" is mostly because I think it's a game that will be more fun if more people play it.

2026-04-04 15:32:58 UTC

You can now wishlist my next game on steam!
It'll release as free so I don't know what wishlisting it will do, but I'm sure it won't hurt! :D

@nprofile…m4he yeah I guess if there is a social shame in it then there is more power/liberation in just calling it a pleasure without any qualification at all.

2026-04-02 09:30:33 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…m4he ah that makes sense - I mean it’s a bullshit and foolish social force fucking people up, but yeah it does give context I can understand. The pleasure is real, the guilt is imposed and felt but it’s not actually something to feel guilty about. Doesn’t explain all uses though, like some cases definitely don’t involve guilt or anything like it at all surely

2026-04-02 09:22:40 UTC

- reply

Because honestly the only thing I ever experience that could actually be described as a “guilty pleasure” is the pleasure I get when an absolute asshole is handed a verdict of Guilty.

2026-04-02 09:20:53 UTC

- reply

If it is actually the last one (which I hope is the case, because I want to like people), can we come up with a less misleading term?
My thoughts:
- Shameless Pleasure
- Contrajoy
- Carefree Happy
- “I don’t feel shame, it’s my game”
- “Fuck you I love it”
- Blorblip

2026-04-02 09:14:06 UTC

Autistic question I want clarity on:
Does a “guilty pleasure” actually involve guilt? Because I can’t enjoy anything if I’m guilty about doing it.
Are people truly “I feel good about this but ALSO bad”?
Or… is it just what people say when they like something that is unethical and are just pretending to feel guilty so it looks like they have a conscience?
Or is it not actually meant to be understood as guilt, just an acknowledgment that it might be unpopular or unhealthy but you don’t care?

Also I recognise that a trans allegory is very often a neurodivergent allegory also.
But I’m told there are neurotypical trans people out there, and neurodivergent cis people. I don’t know any, but I have heard that they exist.

2026-03-24 11:20:59 UTC

Matrix as a trans allegory? Yeah sure, but what about the matrix as allegory for neurodivergence.
Like, all the people escaping the matrix for a nice, dark, quiet ship with lots of computers to play with? And when they go into the matrix they are ALWAYS wearing shades even though it’s not that bright in there.
The Matrix is a movie about finding the best ways to regulate which is removing yourself from society as much as possible, eating the same basic crap forever, and wearing heavy boots.

For example I notice I voice “THat” for emphasis… or just at the beginning of a sentence. Like what the fuck is voicing just my mouth’s caps-lock????
I know English has all these “rules” that are actually wrong and stuff is rarely written phonetically but holy crap, those are DIFFERENT CONSONANTS and I never even noticed until right now?!

2026-03-23 17:16:41 UTC

Was idly thinking with my mouth and realised that whether to voice the “th” consonant in English is impossible to determine other than by convention. It’s not like “ch/j” where it breaks down to two distinct phonemes, BUT voiced and unvoiced “th” both happen in English, with no way to know when to use either! I think maybe it varies by dialect, but also when someone wants to stress a word they might just voice the “th” differently.

Maybe speaking in tongues is channeling divine knowledge idk…
But for reference, for each one of these there are about 500 “Go fuck yourself!” so maybe the divine spends most of its time really pissed off.

I feel I should clarify, by “feature-complete-ish” I mean a hidden feature that would only be used by people with 50+ hours experience during high-level competition play - that feature is not *quite* ready.
Specifically, it’s memorisation series. You’re given a whole series of grids to memorise and then must solve each without seeing what you’re doing. Like I say, almost nobody will do this and I’m only adding it because I think it would be cool.

@nprofile…qhuq Yes, you can do that! The roll expression you want is:
3d6Ti
This works because results that are text are counted seperately, the "T" converts the pool result to text, the "i" specifies that you want individual values for each die in the pool.
Duplicate results may be stacked (eg: "4d6Ti= 1, 5x2, 3") but you can disable that in Settings > Results if you prefer.
Details of the Text roll condition here:
https://sophiehoulden.com/dice/documentation/notation.html#text
