So… I’m dumb. I saw two 30-pin 4MB SIMMs for 7 Euro, and bought them. Of course, one of them is 4MB, the other is 1MB, and this was very clearly stated in the item description that I failed to read.
If any of you has one of these 4MB module in the EU and wants to get rid of it, let me know! The Mac LC can only use memory in pairs of equal sizes. #retroApple #retroComputing

Web Design these days is as good as everything else. I’m running through corporate training. There’s a page with a question, three one-word answers and a submit button.
The page doesn’t fit vertically on my 5K display. I still have to scroll.
How large are the displays these people design on? Jumbotrons?!

Elon Musk actively supports far-right parties, including participating via video link in the AfD campaign launch.
Any post or interaction in X, especially from a popular account, directly generates revenue to X from advertising and paid subscriptions.
These are not opinions. These are facts.
The logical conclusion is, by using X, you generate revenue to X, part of it turns into profit and enriches Musk.
So yes you’re financing an extremely dangerous far-right supporter by using X, @nprofile…5rls.

Back home, time to do some #RetroApple! Pulled out the caps from the Classic board. Lots of nasty under them. Good thing I didn’t try to power this board before recapping.
I use the twisting method to remove them, while applying pressure down against the board to avoid pulling the traces up. Fourth board so far without any pulled trace. Guess it works?

There’s some stupid regulation (Portuguese? European? Who knows) that mandates scrambled eggs at hotels to be made out of liquid egg (sold in bottles) instead of actual eggs due to “health and safety” concerns.
The hotel I’m staying since yesterday uses those. This stuff is inedible. Taste, texture, all terrible. Thankfully they also offer boiled real eggs. 🥚
This is exactly the kind of regulation that gets people against regulation.

To folks into electronics, PCB manufacturing and/or #retrocomputing: this is a very broken membrane of an LC keyboard (M0487). Many traces are bad. I was wondering if this could be manufactured like any regular PCB. JLC apparently does flexible boards although I’m not sure if it’s the same materials. Some questions:
- How to do the black contacts (graphite?)?
- How to do the bridges?
- How to define which areas are covered and exposed (like the plug)?
- Can it be done at all?

I have been wanting to watch the sunset here since 2017, the last time I was here. I finally did.

Things I miss from classic MacOS: got a larger disk (or in modern times, finally created a bigger disk image on your BlueSCSI) and want to migrate your data?
1. Drag all the old disk contents into the new disk.
That's it. There's no step 2. The new disk is ready and bootable. #RetroApple

2026-08-28 19:38:46 UTC

I’m starting to get pissed off at #FreeBSD lack of quality. Upgrading from 13 to 15 broke a basic lib that I had to manually copy from a boot disk to restore my system. Now, someone decided to change adguardhome package in a way that it completely fucks existing installations when upgrading without absolutely no warning.
FreeBSD used to be known exactly for shit like this NOT happening. What’s changing in this project? Why is it so similar to Linux now, that an upgrade breaks every damn thing?

Coding for classic Macs is at the same time a painful and incredibly fascinating experience! But hey at least I used MacsBug for something real for the first time. In 2026!
PowerPlant helps a lot although their Appearance classes are a bit of a mess, very buggy on pre-appearance systems and totally not documented. I’m pushing solving a lot of UI bugs for later.
Still a lot of work to do but I hope it will be useful especially on 68k Macs!
And of course all first party code written by a human.

So about the #retrobright mice… it didn’t go that well. First pic is how one of them looked after the process. Lots of very visible stains. I’ve read to get rid of them I need to reapply the peroxide, this time without wrapper. It has to be continuously re-applied to avoid drying out. So I did, every 10-20 minutes for 2-3 hours. It got… better? But not great. Yet, at least. Second pic: on the left the mouse that went through the second treatment, on the right the one that didn’t. #retroApple

This is why any tech product that has as its top selling point being European loses me instantly. Thinking Europeans will magically be morally superior to Americans is just ludicrous. Just look at examples listed by Aline and politics moving towards the end of privacy and introduction of backdoors.
If Europe does not want to keep marching to total irrelevancy, it needs to make better products, technically and ethically. Not promote crap like W at the highest level, for example.

Today I’m showing you what you hear at 7AM at the Paris 9th district.

I don’t get the new mastodon post quoting management. If the author of the post I’m quoting needs to approve the quote, why am I not given the option of also making my own post publishing pending on that approval? Otherwise my post is essentially published with a hole in it. It’s already public but no one can see what I’m quoting so it doesn’t make sense.

Super frustrated with #FreeBSD today. Spent the entire afternoon setting up networking on a jail because the documentation is vastly incomplete, and a bunch of mysterious arguments to disable checksum offloading to the Ethernet card are required (but never mentioned in the documentation) for things to work properly.
Not having to deal with BS like this is exactly the reason I use FreeBSD. So this is disappointing.

2026-01-24 13:12:13 UTC

It doesn't matter how many times I look into this, I can't really wrap my head around how network bridges work in FreeBSD and Linux.
Specifically, why is the host IP on the bridge interface itself and not on the en0 (or whatever) attached to the bridge.
The bridge is a layer 2 thing. It should not have any IP. It should work like a switch. I don't get why was this modelled this way, nor exactly *how* it's modelled.

It's kind of amazing (and certainly depressing) the Portuguese President assaults a woman in the middle of an event with multiple TV cameras pointing at him and this barely makes the news. This is just one more episode in an already long list that should have made him resign or being pushed out immediately. https://expresso.pt/politica/presidente/2025-06-04-nao-me-agarre-o-pescoco-marcelo-rebelo-de-sousa-confrontado-por-mulher-na-feira-do-livro-7f70463b

I've been following MacInTouch for… decades… I don't even know any more. Sad to see the site being paused. I'm hoping Ric brings it back sometime in the feature, but whatever his decision is, I'm thankful for many, many years of great content about the Macintosh and Apple. Thank you, sir, for all your work. 🙏

This gets better and better. Apparently Prince was not in the Lisbon airport. Instead he had his private jet in Tires, an airport a few km from Lisbon used by many such planes. He and the crew apparently reacted poorly to the mandatory security luggage inspection, with screaming and commotion. Airport staff says even private jet passangers must go through regular security, as legally required. A case of “I’m too rich, rules shouldn’t apply to me?” https://eco.sapo.pt/2025/05/26/ceo-da-cloudflare-tera-estado-envolvido-em-incidente-a-saida-de-tires-acusa-diretor-do-aerodromo/

Cloudflare CEO seems to be having a meltdown about Portugal because he's stuck at the immigration line in LIS due to problems with new immigration IT systems.
Buddy, you're not wrong, but I’ve waited almost 3 hours for my parents in SFO and this was during Obama time. You're American, you can enter the US easily, you have no idea what others have to go through. Especially if they have the "wrong" skin color or religion.
If that's your criteria for stopping investing in PT, stop US as well.

Does anyone happen to have photos of the internals of the top clamshell of a PowerBook G3 (Pismo, Lombard, etc) popped open? I'm trying to find photos of the brittle plastic tabs that keep both parts together so I know what I'm dealing with before causing a tragedy. It's surprisingly hard to find this on the intertubes. #retrocomputing #RetroApple

Today was the 51th anniversary of the carnation revolution, celebrating the end of a fascist regime in Portugal. It's also the 50th anniversary of the first free elections in this country, where 91% of the registered voters did vote.
And I finally could be among the crowd, instead of watching it from across the pond. 😁 Walked down the avenue next to the left-wing Bloco de Esquerda supporters, who have a lot more energy and a lot less age than me…

Hey Canadians 🇨🇦, you know the best thing you can do on this Good Friday? Go out and vote 🗳️! Advance voting starts today, and this election is really important. https://vancouversun.com/news/federal_election/federal-election-2025-advance-voting-starts-today-dates-times-locations

For a bunch of years I sent my ballot via post to vote on the Portuguese elections from Vancouver.
Today I did the opposite for the first time, I just dropped the ballot for the Canadian federal elections on the mail here in Portugal.
If you are Canadian, no matter where you are, vote. These elections may very well define the very existence of Canada as an independent country.

Salut, Barcelona! I finally visited your superblocks! Well, two of them at least. They’re not perfect, but the difference between them and the average car-infested street here is drastic.
The noise levels go way down as soon as one walks into them, and even with bad weather and few people out, human voices are clearly perceived instead of combustion engines and tires on asphalt.
There are green spaces and people walk wherever they want. We need more, much more of these.

I remember I used some utility that allowed sending short messages via AppleTalk. I think I would go to the chooser, select the other user, type a message, and it would appear as an alert dialog on the other Mac. I know it existed because I used it a lot to chat with my neighbour (we had a PhoneNet cable between our apartments). Does anyone remember the name of this thing? #GlobalTalk #AppleTalk #RetroApple

Portuguese-speaking #retroComputing peeps: tomorrow, the documentary "Timex: Uma Revolução Por Contar” will be broadcasted on RTP 2. This documentary tells the story of Timex Portugal, where a lot of cool tech was developed, from #ZXSpectrum clones to Tenet, the ZX Spectrum network, targeting classrooms, with impressive features at the time! Produced in cooperation with Load ZX, the only Spectrum museum in the world, in Cantanhede, Portugal. https://www.rtp.pt/programa/tv/p46876

@nprofile…hsxd Mostly abuse and intimidation. How many times was there any situation in Europe where authorities had to use such heavy weaponry inside an airport? Sadly, like we just saw this week, the cops are more interested in demonstrations of power towards inocentes foreigners (Martim Moniz) than actually confronting and arresting violent criminals (sports hooligans vandalizing and using flammable and explosive equipment inside a restaurant). Cops are mostly racist cowards these days.

@nprofile…hsxd Regardless, I don’t get why the speed limit change is so controversial. Nobody is adding any new rule. Inside a locality we have a default speed limit unless posted otherwise. We’re talking about adjusting that speed limit. That’s it. No more, no less rules. Should we remove the speed limits at all because we can’t fully enforce them? I don’t get why having a 50 km/h limit is perfectly fine, but having a 30 km/h is apparently a gross violation of human rights or something.

@nprofile…hsxd And if you are assuming that rules are pointless because no one abides by them, you are making the perfect case for banning driving in cities.
