Our dogs like to play with the empty peanut butter jars before we put them in the recycling...the one with the longer nose/tongue ends up with it last...she will hold it between her paws and lick the inside of it for an hour or so! When she's finally done with it, there's still a bit of peanut butter on the sides of the bottom third of the jar...letting you know *exactly* how far her tongue makes it inside the jar. 🤣

What is redwood recycle? Does old wood get repurposed/refinished? I know in our area old barnwood sells at a huge premium to woodworkers, so I’m curious if it’s similar.

Southern style pintos (also referred to as “soup beans” in some areas of southern Appalachia). One of the best tasting, most filling, relatively healthy, and supremely cheap meals to make.
I did these in the instant pot because I couldn’t start until after 6pm. Used two smoked ham hocks, the small amount of meat on which was shredded and added back to the beans once cooked. Bones/tendons/skin was discarded.
Eating now with fresh diced onions and crispy bacon bits (the fat from which was used to brown the onions and garlic that went in before cooking the beans) as a topping, and jalapeño cheddar cornbread. Packed with protein and fiber. And just a bit of fat to keep you feeling full.
Leftovers will be even better tomorrow when everything sits together in the fridge overnight…

And you can live with yourself! That’s so important and I think so many people who “get ahead” by what I would consider to be “normal material societal metrics” are empty. If I were a manager at some of the departments I’ve worked in…I would happily take a 30%+ pay cut for a quality of life increase based on what I see them deal with.
I know “money can’t buy happiness” is cliche…but you don’t have to have a ton to learn it is true. Just seeing what some of the people who wring themselves dry go through makes me happy to be where I am, and based on this conversation where you all are at too.
I guess that’s why we’re having thoughtful conversations on Mastodon 😎

In my (biased) experience over my *counts on fingers…oh my goodness* 16 years in an office setting in a thankfully non-customer-facing part of the financial industry, the most competitive people are also the people that are good at talking, and are good at being confident - but very frequently without competence to match. I’ve worked with many people like this over the years that have definitely gotten “farther” (by some measures) than I have by hopping around in a cycle of overselling, sounding like an expert, delegating most things, getting in over their head once they have to account for the delta between knowledge and self-promotion, and then jumping ship for another company, getting a nice raise as they do so.
Then there are the people who just like to keep their head down and get their work done. The people who feel slimy trying to “sell themselves” and who feel like a huckster at “networking events.” I consider myself in this group, and most of my favorite coworkers are the same. We don’t generally do really showy things, our raises tend to be competitive but not nearly as much as jumping ship for a higher salary, and people generally come to us for advice before going to the big talkers who they’ve found out through experience aren’t much help. We care greatly about our work, but could care less about company politics that don’t affect us directly. We will never move as far “up the ladder” as the first group, and most of us are okay with that because we don’t want the feeling of dealing with the “rat race.” I’m lucky enough to work for a manager (that I followed from my last company after he switched) that is the same - so we get along great and can commiserate about the big-talker-do-nothings in the office.
There is a third group of people who are rare, but I’ve worked with - people who blend both groups who are good at selling themselves, confident, can be comfortable in any crowd almost instantly, and who have the competence and expertise to match. I also like working for people like this because they generally do a good job of selling not only themselves but their team as a whole. But in my experience this group is much harder to find. Sort of an office…not “unicorn,” because they do exist, but it’s like finding a four-leafed clover.
Of course there’s also the people that skate by just enough to not get fired…everyone tries not to depend on them for anything, and often ends up absorbing some of their work because it’s much more effort walking them through how to do basic tasks again and again that they never seem to retain. Everywhere I’ve worked has this group, the difference is at the best places I’ve worked this group is very small, and at the worst places I’ve worked the group is the majority, with a handful of people from the first 3 groups picking up all the slack.
I have been temped at various points to try to make a living doing something creative, but I watched my father - who is a tremendously talented woodworker - leave Corporate America to start a furniture business, slowly burn himself out over 5-6 years, deal with no/fewer health and retirement benefits, get frustrated by a public that constantly wanted custom work at IKEA prices and made unreasonable demands, and ultimately be incredibly grateful to make it *back* to a major Corporation. That somewhat cured that “itch” for me and makes me have the perspective I do now…which is do a good job at work, but don’t live for it…work to live and fuel your hobbies. I have tremendous respect for you and people like you that have the drive and passion to make creative things their living. But I don’t think it will ever be something I can do. At least not unless I had some kind of ridiculous and unexpected windfall to make it relatively risk-free.

Every accusation from these people is an admission.
Almost all of the (vanishingly small amount of) voter fraud that has been found was done by/on the part of Republicans.
All of the people who ran on releasing the Epstein files in the current admin are covering them up - partly out of malice and partly out of sheer incompetence.
The people who complain the other side can only win by rigging things…are trying to rig things because that’s the only way they can win.
And as you rightly noted - the “free speech absolutists” are stifling speech in this country more than anyone has in my lifetime.
The second amendment side of the aisle are saying someone deserved to be shot by ICE because they were (legally and without brandishing) carrying, and shouldn’t be allowed to take a gun to a protest (but Kyle Rittenhouse did nothing wrong!) - and the Jan 6th crowd that said they were “peaceful and loving” are intimidated by people actually peacefully protesting.
The “fuck your feelings” crowd had a collective anyeurism at the mere existence of a Super Bowl half time show in Spanish, and they probably don’t even realize the singer - from Puerto Rico - is American, because so it Puerto Rico.
And to top it all off - despite the q-anon “there’s a secret cabal of perdophiles!” people, their champion is most certainly a major customer of one, and every small tow local news story I seem to see about someone getting arrested for diddling kids it’s a MAGAt. Not a trans person, not a drag queen, not a “radical Marxist liberal.”
It’s frustrating, to say the least, how many people - despite the constant barrage of evidence - can’t see them for what they are. Instead it’s blind tribalism, near-constant panic and victimhood, and a staggering amount of cognitive dissonance.

No apologies needed! I know you’re in the UK, it just reminded me of the entire dynamic we have here surrounding university debt repayments. I would imagine (and please inform me if I’m incorrect and I’m interested to hear the differences) that there are similarities with respect to incomplete information given to students whose brains have not yet fully formed yet who are expected to be the source of recourse years later.

I can only speak to my experience in the US circa 2005-ish, but I remember the term “financial aid” thrown around, and I don’t remember hearing the word “loan.” I went to assemblies and school events with speakers and it really had the feel of “free money” in a way that no regular 17-18 year old could possibly navigate.
I’m lucky in two ways, one being my family set aside the requisite amount required to go to my modest state school, and lucky because I was told early on how loans work. The majority of my generation is not so lucky, and 20 years on many are still paying student loans. I think you’d be hard pressed, were you to be of that generation with recollection of what occurred, to say everyone was remotely close to well-informed.

Disclosure: have had a few drinks and am about to go to bed, but this topic is very important to me so I wanted to empty my brain into a response.
I think (not a historian, not a political scientist, got a degree in economics that I’ve forgotten most of, so take this with a grain of salt) that the civil war scenario isn’t accurate, at least not on its face. Unlike the first go-round there’s not a regional divide. The divide in the US currently largely follows rural vs urban - which is interesting considering the urban centers are the tax base that fund all the things the rural areas need. This is a broad generalization of course, there are rural folks who lean left and people in cities who lean right.
The current administration is focusing its terror on the areas that did not vote for it, and in my opinion it’s largely performative. Not to say that the results aren’t horrendous - they absolutely are - but I think it’s being done for theatre as opposed to policy objectives. It’s telling that the Rapist in Chief touts trying to “liberate” a state that voted for him 3 times…when it did the opposite.
That’s not meant to minimize any of this however - even at the most possible Pollyanna view of this we are experiencing at the very least a constitutional crisis. And it will get worse before it gets better, I’m afraid. And there will be suffering and death, which while always abhorrent is especially so because it is needless.
In short, I don’t think the gravity is overstated…I think the parallel is inaccurate. The geography doesn’t support a civil war (it supports general unrest I suppose, which isn’t really any better). But we have a few things going for us - the admin is growing more unpopular by the day. The urban areas it despises generate the vast majority of our GDP. The most violent and brazenly fascist parts of the admin - the immigration “enforcement” - are even becoming unpopular in part of the right wing base right now. We have a period of chaos and violence ahead of us, but it’s also an opportunity to create a new progressive era after this, which also gives me hope. That along with the number of average Minnesotans continuing to protest. And the number of people in my own state who are protesting. And the number of people who have never protested before that are protesting. There’s something about standing on the side of the road, holding a sign (or in my case a camera), seeing people of all walks of life - even those who visually I would’ve assumed were not aligned with my views - standing up with us and saying “this is bullshit, and it needs to stop.”

It’s sort of an Arab-twinged modern jazz, excellent through and through. Double LP. It’s really hard to peg what sub-genre this would be, I’ll let you decide, if you care.
