well, a smallish good thing but Asheville city council has cancelled the city's Flock contract. the city manager then said they'll hold off until further review with the Axon plate readers that were also previously planned.

while i'm musing on degrowth - i continue to grapple with the question of individual & collective action. to me it's clear that rather than either-or, it needs to be both. lately i've had a thought that i want to offer when folks disparage individual-choice changes: maybe some percentage of potential comrades needs to see the difficulty and smallness of some of these things at the personal scale in order to get on board with more systemic answers.
Certainly i've learned a lot about practicalities and logistics pertaining to, e.g., composting by practicing it myself. Likely nothing could have convinced me of the need for local-scale collaboration on waste management & soil building better than the year i tried to shred and compost every cardboard box shipped to our house.

2026-06-12 18:06:58 UTC

Unusual case at work today, the house has a great rooftop solar setup but they're in a pickle with it: the company who installed it went bankrupt, and now there's an issue in their system that nobody is obligated to fix, but they're still paying the loan.
Being mastodon i thought id ask if any of yall might know how to regain control of a SolarEdge inverter/monitoring platform, once controlled by Titan Solar?

i don't think off-handedly using a loaded word that society at large doesn't interrogate ethically is a moral failing. i *do* think responding with condescension, then mockery, then anger when people raise the point is probably not ideal. And repeatedly insisting that this common usage is fine simply because it's common is certainly a failure of intellect, courage, or morality. you can go ahead and pick which, professor. Multiple choice is allowed.

my complaint is not about whether we can know if the shooter is mentally ill. i actually don't think that question is relevant to much except for how to handle them if caught and found guilty.
On the other hand, if we're trying to discuss how this relates to What's Going On and What To Do About It, being clear about what matters is crucial.
and beyond that, considering that speech is an act within and upon the world, it's important to be mindful of the impacts.

i wonder if demonizing mental health conditions advances the cause of inclusive compassion or the cause of fascist violence. Then again, it's not like the people experiencing a profoundly terrifying psychological crisis can complain, so it's probably fine. Maybe they *want* to be under the bus, did any of you nitpicking scolds consider that!?

"uh, none of that sounds political to me?"
because our world is relational, everything is political. every choice you make impacts the world within you, and to a lesser but still large extent, the world within your arms' reach, and then to a lesser extent your family & friends and their minds bodies and arms, and so on.
that doesn't mean we have to get everything right today, which is great because we can't. we just keep walking together, toward liberation

some easy wins for lots of people:
- adblock helps you unlearn consumerist tendencies and saves electricity
- drinking less will improve your mood, energy, and budget
- just taking a walk outside every day is good for physical *and* mental health, reconnecting you with seasonal rhythms and local ecology, and taking up time that might be otherwise spent making some death priest's number go up
feed your self, starve the beast. a better world can start within us

2025-03-16 19:16:37 UTC

i believe people *will* go for it. i don't think it will be easy or fast or straightforward, but it will be rewarding and meaningful. We can have a beautiful future of cleaner air and water, better relationships, and shared abundance. Profit will be a dirty word.
We start with ourselves - stretching our comfort zone, replacing old habits, living as if it all matters - and by doing our work and sharing our findings, we make it easier for others to join us.

One could just as easily say that it's almost as if the Democratic Party is designed to absorb and diffuse leftist impulses, leaving room for a party to carve off leftist voters but never enough to seriously destabilize two-party rule.
Blaming a small handful of goofballs, true believers, and opportunists for their effect on an entrenched network of powerful elites with the nominal backing of millions of people requires ignoring the power dynamics.

2024-11-01 15:26:43 UTC

being real though, when i was young i told mom that i didn't want to go to sleep "because there's so many things i haven't thought about yet" and honestly it's still true, biggest difference is it's less "how fucking cool are sharks and dinosaurs" and more "here's a highlight reel of five thematically-related times you fucked up pretty bad"
i've yet to understand how to reach the end of the day and think, ok, yeah, that one's done, let it go.
that's one of my big challenges with rising early.

well, it really depends! urban folks can look into municipal compost, worm bins (aka vermiculture), or pickup services like CompostNow. For those with more yard space, there are many options and the best thing to do is start experimenting.
One way to reduce moisture in your pile is to shred paper and uncoated cardboard (many paper shredders can handle basic corrugated with a little patience) and set it aside to mix in as needed.

for now i'll just wonder aloud, what structures and institutions would benefit from this total conflation of growth with comfort and happiness? Would a system that profits from influencing all our beliefs and behaviors *dare* to position itself in our imaginations as the Only Good Thing? :thonking:
