Two days ago I actually had the opportunity to present my Onward! essay.
The presentation consisted of a prerecorded video (which I think wasn't tragic) and a live Q&A session.
The first question was asked by Guy Steele, and I feel that I didn't deliver a satisfactory answer (it wasn't a hard question, and it wasn't unexpected either, so I could have prepared), and that's probably nothing, but I can't stop thinking that I could have answered it better.

I'm in the midst of watching this, and a thought came to me, about this sentence that "engineering comes with guarantees and software comes with disclaimers", that the fact that we got used to this horrible model of using software, that we either have to pay for subscriptions, or by letting bigtech spy on us, can be a problem with CS education, which accepts a divorce between techniques and ethics.
I mean, I am a part of the generation that got fooled by google (and I still use gmail), but I still don't see the issues caused by computers (e.g. Cambridge Analytica/Brexit) being addressed by computer science departments at all.
We have armies of people teaching how one could build a facebook clone, but no one to teach how to tear facebook down, and no one to warn us that ChatGPT is the new facebook.

I think it's easy to dismiss LLMs this way (and it's not the first time I hear such criticism).
And there are indeed many dark aspects related to that technology. My main concern is that, withou proper discipline, it makes people more more stupid and more dependent.
On the other hand, cocaine didn't have, nor give you, access to 'all of the world's knowledge'. I also managed to use Claude Code and ChatGPT to build a few services that are used by other people that I otherwise wouldn't be able to build, or that would take me much longer time to build.
And maybe that's because modern tech stacks really suck, or maybe that's because I suck as a programmer, but it is apparent that they enhance my ability as a programmer.

@nprofile…0e93 @nprofile…yxlh in my view, the main problems with Kawa are that:
- there are some bugs in the compiler
- the compiler is written in the 90's Java style, very stateful and it's not always easy to figure out what's going on
- the author of Kawa doesn't seem to have energy/passion/capability to maintain it anymore
- there is no vibrant community around Kawa, and there seems to be no commercial incentives either (like the ones Cognitect had)
That being said, I think it is an amazing piece of work - including both the engineering effort and the tasteful extensions to the Scheme language

So, when it comes to square brackets:
- I don't use them as an alternative to () in various contexts (the way R6RS allows and often Racket and Chez folks do). I don't think that adds much to the readability of code, but I think it adds a little bit of confusion
- I don't use them the way Kawa suggests (i.e. by desugaring A[B] as ($bracket-apply$ A B)), although I use Kawa's a:b as ($lookup$ a `b) quite extensively
- I kinda like the way Gerbil uses them (as a light-weight alternative to quasiquote, also in the match-pattern context)
- I do have a special meaning reserved for them in GRASP. The idea is broadly sketched here (around sixth paragraph): https://github.com/panicz/grasp/blob/main/literate/grasp.org#the-advanced-parser

I agree with your points, though I have a slightly different perspective.
I love programming in Scheme, and I have a picture of what an ideal programming system would look like. And I try to pursue it. I feel that using LLMs to build it would be just stupid.
And then there are applications that I develop for others. I have a customer who specifically pays me for vibecoding an app for him. I agreed on that deal, because I was curious.
I do get some joy in building systems in natural language. Much more so than if I were to use Python or React and their plethora of frameworks and libraries I didn't know or wouldn't care about.
Using a third-party libraries injects a similar kind of indeterminism to your code as LLMs. And React is horrible.
It's the kind of code that if I had to write it, I'd probably feel bad about it.
Of course I'm not trying to convince you to vibe code. But I don't think there's mutual exclusion between vibecoding and handcrafting systems.

Let me start off by saying that I'm impressed by Haskell' s type system and I've long been looking for a nice way to express types in Scheme
So I was familiar with the work by Gary Leavens https://www.cs.ucf.edu/~leavens/ui54/docs/typedscm_toc.html
or with typed-racket
And I didn't like any of them.
When I started using Kawa, it was the first time when I was really satisfied with a type system for Scheme, at least notation-wise. There are certain capabilities, like - in particular - support for generics, or more advanced type inference, that are missing from that type system. But given that type expressions are potentially macro-expanded, I don't find that to be an urgent problem.
Now, when it comes to your proposal, it doesn't address any of those issues. It doesn't provide type-inference. If I'm getting it right, it is perhaps a slightly more compact notation for a particular use of runtime assertions, but it's still much more verbose than lack of type signatures (that Haskell and ML can boast due to type inference) or what Kawa has to offer.
One advantage that I can see is that it can be used with most Scheme implementations. But it requires me to write code that I wouldn't want to write, and that I don't want to have to write.

@nprofile…45cc personally I'm not a fan of the concept of multiple values, but if I am to work with them, I much prefer SRFI-72-style let* forms than all alternatives that I've seen.
(Also, the code from lambda-papers doesn't even use the "let" forms - perhaps they weren't yet invented back then? and I personally find it very hard to read)

I think that
(given (((isnt x null?))) something-something)
naturally corresponds to "given that x isn't null" in English, and
(given ((x 5)) blah)
could be read as "given x to be 5", and that those two usages from English correspond nicely to the two fundamental cases of and-let*.
Also, clearly
(given ((something (get-something)))
(do something))
shouldn't do anything when something is nothing (i.e. when it wasn't given) 🤪

I've been a keen user of the "and-let* macro defined in the SRFI-2. I've even authored its sequel, SRFI-202.
But I never really liked the name.
I mean, it does reveal that conceptually it's an amalgam of "and" and "let*. But as a word to be used in a language, it's rather clumsy.
(In this regard it resembles "multiple-value-bind" from Common Lisp. OK, it does bind multiple values, but that's not a handy word. It's as if "progn" from Common Lisp was "evaluate-forms-in-order. I mean, "progn" is already a bad name compared to Scheme's "begin", but)
In either case, today I had a small revelation. I mean, I've been thinking about the right name for "and-let*" for many years, so moments like this don't happen very often.
So, ladies and gentlemen, who - like me - are disappointed with the name of the "and-let*" macro, even though you find the macro itself useful, let me present a better alternative:
given
You're welcome.

I recently got back to my work on literate #GRASP, and I think things finally started to look good. I implemented a new document representation (the previous one was built from cons-cells and multiple hacks), and I have some working tests that are capable of rendering this representation to "unicode-art" strings, and I'm currently working on a new parser that would work well with that representation.
I still have a long way to go before I get a running system, and I don't think it's a very good literature, but if you're a #Scheme maniac or a fan of #LiterateProgramming and you don't find the #Java runtime environment too repulsive, I invite you to follow the work and provide your feedback:

I feel that the concept needs more research & exploration before standardization, but it's of any value, I recently started continuing my literate reimplementation of GRASP, and I'm running into some issues that would probably benefit from a good discussion.
The document is available here:
https://github.com/panicz/grasp/blob/main/literate/grasp.org
but currently the bulk of it consists of the description of language extensions used to express GRASP. The actual reimplementation of the editor itself starts in the section "The architecture of GRASP" at the bottom. The name and the structure are very likely to change because I'm looking for the right approach to the development.
In either case, the current stage is pretty close to TeleGRASP.

@nprofile…aqfx while I'm not American, I don't think that the Constitution is the problem. With the right people in the right place, every law can easily bent or ignored (i.e. willfully misinterpreted).
The actual problem is that there's a bunch of billionaires who have the power to control the democracy (not just in the US but worldwide), who know everything about us, even though we (the people) know very little about them, and we have no means to hold them accountable.
So while I think something can be done to improve the law (as the example of the post-Nazi Germany shows), I think it's going to be very hard for the US.

@nprofile…y0nc as I've been reading through Shoshana Zuboff's "Age of Surveillance Capitalism", I became concerned that the main problem is not with the taxes, but with the radical imbalance of knowledge and its processing capabilities.
If we managed to prevent them from spying on us, we'd probably no longer have billionaires in the first place.

@nprofile…vdlw sadly, I haven't made too much progress with that project
I did try writing an interactive book with GRASP, but that project stalled too
At the moment, I'm mainly working on an Onward! essay (and perhaps other academic publications) to convey the "broader vision"

yeah, so I did that because my friend asked me to do it, and I was curious how well it would work (and it really surpassed my expectations)
but the actual problem that I see is the lack of the right substrate, or continuity, between spreadsheets and "full-blown programming"

@nprofile…38ae I've been using Claude for over a month now (paid subscription), and I used it to build a fairly advanced website for a friend to run his photo studio, with a Kanban board, chat and notifications.
(Previously he used a work-flow based on Trello and Google Spreadsheets)
I can't say this is how I imagine a perfect development workflow, but I think it's a fairly good remedy to the way web development sucks in the today's world.
Previously I also used ChatGPT to vibe-code an appointment calendar app, and it generated a fairly good scaffolding, but I had to fix some stuff myself (because apparently it was losing context very easily, even though the entire thing was fairly small), but with Claude I had nothing to complain on so far.
(Plus the CLI integrates fairly nicely with my workflow)
I plan to give it a try with some more advanced tasks later on, but honestly I expect it to fail on most things that are non-standard.

@nprofile…jpre so the exact content of his post was the following:
"It would be nice if some of the Twitter diaspora returned. So many creatives, but also many developers, that generally enriched the experience are no longer active.
Those that performatively left and those with a seething hatred of Elon probably won’t be back soon, but a lot of people just disengaged on vague cultural grounds that can be reevaluated.
There are probably some technical tweaks to the algorithm that could make them more comfortable. I don’t mind the existence of independent echo chambers that people are happy within. There is only a problem when some echo chambers are allowed and others aren’t.
Reach out to lapsed friends!"
He also apparently pays Musk for X subscription (because of the blue check mark - which e.g. Romero doesn't have), and his profile picture comes from his interview with Lex Fridman (as far as I can tell).

Yesterday I went to visit my old Philosophy Department, and I saw this poster on one of the professor's doors (bearing the title "Mathematical Logic and Foundations 1847-1947 and crediting Joel Friedman as its author), and I felt that I have to share it on Mastodon (if nothing else, then just for the sake of writing alt text ;D)
It's around 3MB, so sorry about that, but I didn't want it to make it smaller to make sure the letters remain legible.

Moreover, I feel that I was very fortunate to have received a job in academia, and this week I finished the first draft of the paper about GRASP (which - even if isn't great as a piece of "academic literature" - already had a therapeutic value to me)
I shared it with the head of our institute, a few days ago, but so far the feedback that I got is that my tone is too essayistic - which is probably right, because that's the style that I developed over the years, first at the Philosophy department, and then on Quora, focusing more on the ease of reading than on presenting raw content with RQ1, RQ2 etc.
In either case, the draft is available here (around 25 pages/10000 words):
https://github.com/panicz/grasp/tree/180c54191e4d1e431ec6455d97e657ec21ced2c5/doc/gvp
I'd appreciate your feedback, especially if you're from academia (so I'm thinking particularly about @nprofile…jse2 and @nprofile…d54f but of course I'll be grateful for everybody's remarks)

I know, I know, there's still almost 3 weeks until the end of the year, but I also made a decision earlier that I'm going to write updates whenever I feel like it, and I've been browsing this year's statuses until I reached the summary of 2024, where I listed the following plans:
- start using GRASP to develop itself
- make it usable to people other than myself
- publish it in F-Droid and/or Google Play Store
- make a game for the Lisp Game Jam
- write (and publish) an interactive e-book (as a GRASP app) and earn $$$
- implement the features mentioned at Causal Islands (a comic version of the A* search algorithm and a module browser)
- possibly also integrate GRASP with git
NONE of those happened, and even worse, I was unemployed for 4 months.
Not that I wasn't doing anything. Conversely, I was almost constantly pushing myself to do something, to the point of a mania, but all those pushes sucked all the joy from the development, which is probably why I failed.
I think my condition somewhat related to that of people who claim that they experience burnout - I felt that even doing relatively simple things required considerable time and effort.
Despite all this, there is a number of things that I managed to do:
- I made a 2d physics engine for GRASP
- I wrote a self-hosting Scheme-to-Javascript translator (with macro expander)
- I managed to employ my toolchain to publish an app in the Android store (although I failed to actually publish the app)
There were also a few endeavours that were less successful:
- I started writing an interactive book, and then stopped
- I started repurposing my Quora answer as an interactive book, but also ran into obstacles that stopped me.
I had some positive experience yesterday, though. I decided that I will write a new micro-iteration of GRASP, this time in JavaScript and for the browser. My further plan is to rewrite it to a Scheme flavor, enhancing my Scheme-to-JS translator along the way. But for the first time in a very long time, I had the sense that I was really getting somewhere.

I recently tried Claude to improve the GRASP paper that I've been working on.
Without me even asking, it expanded the acronym "GRASP" as "General-purpose Recursive Artistic Structural Programming".
While GRASP originally stands for "GRAphical Scheme Programming", I think the genai version is not bad.
