I live in Seattle WA (USA) with my family and work in tech. I'm also disabled (mostly deaf & blind on one side). I ride the bus, walk or bike most of the time and I care a lot about our transportation system working for everyone. I spend a lot of my not-work time on local advocacy, family stuff, pottery and our unitarian universalist church. Pronouns: They/Them

Note: I have multiple accounts and not posting all topics from one account. This one is my more general account.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@glyph/117476045058210857
To this point: I am in the middle of analyzing all my (work) claude session notes from last client. basically have to use it if I want to stay employed, so I took copious notes about my prompts, how well the “just a tool” worked (almost always on manual mode so I was seeing EVERY mistake and command), how I FELT, and, well, more folks should do this. It’s (a) exhausting to keep the log, and (b) eye opening to review. cc @glyph

We switched to Jellyfin 18 months ago. Plex was basically unusable. Even if we dropped new media in we had to go manually tell it to scan, it was constantly getting things wrong, not playing stuff that we already had, etc. Jellyfin worked better immediately. Slightly more setup complexity but at least I understand what it’s doing when it does have issues.

I don’t even find the message boards concerning emergent behavior. Posting on boards is in the training data. The tools are designed to write context to be reloaded later. Each agent’s written context can be fetched and be part of another agent’s context and inform what they do next. I find it kind of surprising that this gets described as if it’s surprising.

Good for the Debian community and I hope proposal A passes. The social contract culture of Debian – that good software is about how people work together – is why my default distro has been Debian for a long while. https://www.debian.org/vote/2026/vote_002

We got a single “burner” induction unit 16 years ago and it became our primary “burner” and that was before induction got popular or common! We did finally get an induction stove top ~4 years ago and the plug-in got passed to a friend who used it a ton (yes it lasted that long! it was only like $100 in 2010!) Highly recommended as a way to try induction out without committing and the new single units these days have far better controls than our old one has.

Also god I don't think that's even the post I was thinking of. He's been so unhinged and condescending about people learning things (or less experienced developers having valur.)
I just don't even get what this is all FOR. Even if it all worked how does it make society better to get more code written faster when it's just all the usual stuff? what transformative anything is coming out of this that makes everyone's lives better??

Sound Transit will start running "simulated service" of Link light rail's line between Seattle & Bellevue next month! That means running trains along the full route the 2 Line is supposed to run from Redmond all the way to Lynnwood! Currently 2 Line stops at the South Bellevue station and doesn't continue west to Seattle.

I follow a number of programming language hashtags and it sometimes feels like every other post is about some AI crap. Still not using it myself at least.

The US should probably just switch to A4 since that's literally what everyone else in the world uses.

The "full page" Braille slate I got was on amazon advertised as for 8.5" x 11" paper but such paper is too wide and too short for it. Also our printer paper is is not heavy enough to effectively write on with a slate & styles. So let's hunt paper. The slate is really for A4 paper as far as I can tell by measuring it which is not a common size in the United States and like 90% of the products on Amazon (I've checked locally) even when filtering size to A4 are actually 8.5x11.

Debra Winger on Bad Hasbara is just such an hard but good discussion. I really appreciate folks who can forthrightly talk about how they themselves have changed and how to leave room for change. https://youtu.be/s0nyM8p-AQs #israel #palestine #uspol

Partner went to our favorite tofu factory in #Seattle -- Thanh Son -- and Lam's seafood (a general Viet and Asian grocery) nearby and of course came home with staple veg and lots of snacks. He got chả lụa chay which is a heavily spiced soy vegetarian "ham". It's locally made, kind of $$ (do we don't get always) but delicious. Also very convenient to slice some up to put in instant noodles for late lunch. A small pleasure.

weirdly this chart lessens my fear for the future. we CAN still limit warming to 1.5C! It's hard but possible. So gonna save this for folks who are like "why bother trying" or "mitigation is more important". they built hoover dam in a couple years. the moon program was less than a decade. long rail lines get built in a year in China. they got a vaccine for a novel virus in arms in a year. we can do big things! we have solutions.

tbh the nuwave is fine. it works. it has weird quirks (but in my experience with many electric cook tops they all have weird quirks). It's our default wok. Before we had it, we used a flat bottom on an induction flat top (before we had that we had a single unit induction plugin we got in 2010 that worked like a champ for 10+ years before we replaced the electric coil cooktop with induction.)

@npub1gqw…5sps @npub13zz…fzxt I am the annoying team member that files issues for the “chores” so as to normalize them as actual work that needs to be done just like new features or whatever. Obviously doesn’t always work but makes me feel better. 😂

A friend pointed out to me this evening that the lead quote on this essay – which I'd read in a hurry interrupted by other things at work – is from the year nineteen eighty five which I spell out in words to emphasize that we collectively forget or never know things we probably should.
