Brazil's democratic evolution and challenges

The early democratic diagnosis in Brazil saw it as ungovernable. Fragmented parties hindered majorities, and presidents were constrained by Congress. Yet, presidential multipartidism enabled difficult reforms and peaceful political transitions.

National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force to Host Talk on WWII OSS Operative Peter Ortiz
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, Pooler, GA, has announced that its monthly Mighty Talk series will continue Tuesday, November 3, with co-author Kaitlin Sanders discussing Ortiz’s War, a book about Peter J. Ortiz, a U.S. Marine and Office of Strategic Services (OSS) operative who conducted special operations in occupied France during WWII. The program begins at 11 a.m. and is free to the public, but registration is required.

Ortiz’s War tells the story of Ortiz, a French Foreign Legionnaire and one of the most decorated Marines of WWII. His combat experience and language skills led to his recruitment for special operations behind enemy lines, where he worked with the French Resistance against German forces. During his missions in occupied France, Ortiz parachuted into enemy territory, trained and armed Resistance fighters, gathered intelligence and helped downed Allied airmen. His operations also involved clandestine missions against German forces. The book recounts his daring escapes and the difficult decisions he faced, including his decision to surrender rather than risk the destruction of a French village.

Sanders co-authored the book with historian Nicholas Reynolds. An award-winning journalist with more than 15 years of experience, she has written for publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, Smithsonian, TIME, Vanity Fair and Glamour. Her reporting often explores stories of courage and resistance, particularly those connected to WWII and the Holocaust. The subject also has a personal connection to Sanders. In 1944, Ortiz rescued her grandfather and others from the Nazis in France. Researching the story took Sanders into the archives of the CIA and into the homes and reunions of WWII veterans and Holocaust survivors. Ortiz’s War is her first book, and she is also participating in the Jewish Book Council’s 2026–2027 author network and tour program.

A Discovery Typo
As you can probably tell from my recent post on Patrick Stewart, I’m a certified space buff. I no longer track the details of our space program but I’m always interested in new happenings. I was really surprised, therefore, when I saw this article on the space shuttle Discovery. It turns out that someone has just noticed that the ‘S’ in “Discovery” on the starboard side is upside down.
It’s pretty subtle and you have to be a bit of a typography nerd to notice but the Helvetica ‘S’ is a bit wider on the bottom. Imagine it: Discovery flew for 27 years and no one noticed. Or at least no one mentioned it. The letters were applied by using stencils so it’s easy to understand how it could have happened. One of the commenters noted that the ‘S’ is right on a seam, which may have made it more difficult to see the problem. In any event, as everyone commenting on it says, once it’s pointed out, you can’t unsee it.
None of this is really important, of course. At most, it’s an amusing deviation from NASA’s obsessive attention to detail. As the article at the link points out, NASA even had detailed, written instructions on what text on the orbiters should look like. They forgot to mention that the stencils should be placed right side up.

Looks like FiiO just dropped the K17 R2R.
As someone who believes that chasing DAC architectures is mostly audio snake oil once SINAD clears human hearing, I'm highly skeptical of the R2R hype.
Is there any actual engineering reason to upgrade to this unit? Does the K17 R2R offer significantly better amp power, features, or cleaner I/O to justify the price tag? Or are we just paying a marketing tax for a resistor ladder?

Review: 40874 Santa's Holiday Countdown
The last of this year's Christmas sets for us to have a look at is 40874 Santa's Holiday Countdown, a functional display intended to help you get into the holiday spirit by counting down the days until Christmas Day.
With Halloween out the way, there's nothing between us and the big day (at least for us here in the UK where Thanksgiving is not celebrated), and this set is here to remind you of that on a daily basis.
