Spooky Time

31 October 2026
Happy Halloween!
It’s time to get spooky! Scary pumpkins, spooky costumes, spookiest of all is how short tomorrow will seem when the sun sets an hour earlier.
Sunset on 31 October 2026 in Pittsburgh = 6:18pm
Sunset on 1 November 2026 in Pittsburgh = 5:16pm!
Daylight Saving Time ends tonight on Halloween. These two events coincide on an irregular basis from 5 to 9 years apart. The next time will be in 2037, but will the U.S. still be changing our clocks twice a year by then? There’s a move afoot to pick a time zone and stick with it, but the idea has stalled.
Meanwhile, change your manual clocks back tonight.
TURN THE CLOCK BACK!
Spooky!

Painting a Giant: Owen Dippie’s Monumental Basquiat in NYC
New Zealand painter and muralist Owen Dippie first encountered Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work when he was thirteen, and the admiration has stayed with him ever since. Decades later, he decided to pay tribute in a way no one could miss. He financed the entire project himself, climbed high above the Bowery, and created a six-story portrait of the artist just steps from where Basquiat once lived and worked. No commercial commission, no painting crew, no assistants.

Dracula by Rob 🧛
Woodsy.
For Halloween, I decided to treat myself to a genuine Aurora monster model. The originals being out of my price range, I settled on a more recent reissue of Count Dracula. First produced by Aurora in 1976, and later in 1999 by Revell in their “Monsters of the Movies” series, this great 1/12th scale model features a nice dungeon floor, plus some little critters to keep the Count company.
Inspired by an email from Paul Adams, I added a Schliech toy Armadillo, to make the scene more reminiscent of the 1931 Universal film.

A “Haunted Tree House” – One-Shot Story
On a dark, stormy night in 1995, I witnessed Jerry Uelsmann’s spooky photos in an “Outer Limits” TV series opening and fell in love with his surreal work. Especially his “Tree House.” This Singulart Magazine article about it was written before his death in April 2022. I’ve always wanted to create something like it. But...

Knock 22% off the LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon before it retires
After nine years on shelves, the UCS LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon is finally up for retirement later this year, now reduced by 22% at a major retailer.
75192 Millennium Falcon is nothing short of the ultimate LEGO Star Wars set, recreating the most iconic ship from the franchise. It's the best possible LEGO tribute to Star Wars, and its legendary status means that it's likely to rise in value in the months following its retirement.
Head to Amazon UK right now to pick up 75192 Millennium Falcon for £575 instead of £734.99. This is almost certainly going to be the best price for the set before it retires or sells out.
Is 75192 Millennium Falcon worth it for £575?
£575 is a significant reduction from the £734.99 RRP for 75192 Millennium Falcon. As easily the most iconic LEGO Star Wars set in modern times, it's likely to retain that status for years and decades to come, fetching a high price on the secondary market.
Those who want 75192 Millennium Falcon not for investment, but for collecting, will find a couple of exclusive minifigures: Hoth Leia and Han. 22% off 75192 Millennium Falcon is well worth it before the set finally retires later this year, and it may well sell out long before December 31.

Viltrox 35mm f/1.4 Pro Review: A Beautiful Behemoth
Viltrox has made huge waves in the world of optics, with many saying that it is the Sigma of China. Of course, this is a huge compliment given that Sigma is now famous for making affordable optics that easily compete with OEM lenses. I've reviewed many Viltrox lenses now, and I always enjoy the process. They are solid lenses, with ambitious optical goals, and they usually meet these lofty expectations.

Feature: Before Metal Gear and Resident Evil, a Trio of Japanese Devs Blazed a Trail in Stealth and Survival Horror
"Taito would give us money. But the games were never published".
Given that Halloween is upon us, now is the perfect time to examine Japan's first survival horror, and how it evolved from the first-ever stealth game. Along the way, we'll also take on the role of Doctor Frankenstein and revive the missing link between them, an unreleased title thought lost forever.
What's interesting is just how much overlap the genres of stealth and survival horror have, with both cross-pollinating over the decades, in Japan and globally. Thief was as much about stealing treasure undetected as it was a survival horror in later levels, while the horror series Siren relied heavily on hiding from Shibito.
