Feature: The Story Of Ecstatica, The Groundbreaking Survival Horror With Plenty Of Balls
An 18-rated ellipsoid classic.
Cast your mind back to the video game landscape of the early '90s, and 2D remains king. Granted, 3D gaming was on the rise thanks to titles such as Star Fox, Alone in the Dark, Virtua Racing and Doom, but with the wave of 32-bit consoles yet to materialise, the industry was at an odd crossroads; CD-ROM tech had mostly been used for FMV and pre-rendered titles like The 7th Guest, Night Trap and Myst—games which promised an immersive, cinematic experience yet lacked a deep and meaningful degree of interaction.
Into this landscape, a tiny two-man UK studio released a game which offered an innovative way to represent characters in 3D whilst maintaining a film-like level of storytelling and player agency, making it far more suitable for the name "interactive movie" than any of the FMV pretenders of the 1990s; it also joins Alone in the Dark as a pre-Resident Evil example of a what would eventually be known as "survival horror". That game was 1994's Ecstatica, developed by Andrew Spencer (of Andrew Spencer Studios) and Alain Maindron.

Feature: Before Metal Gear and Resident Evil, a Trio of Japanese Devs Blazed a Trail in Stealth and Survival Horror
"Taito would give us money. But the games were never published".
Given that Halloween is upon us, now is the perfect time to examine Japan's first survival horror, and how it evolved from the first-ever stealth game. Along the way, we'll also take on the role of Doctor Frankenstein and revive the missing link between them, an unreleased title thought lost forever.
What's interesting is just how much overlap the genres of stealth and survival horror have, with both cross-pollinating over the decades, in Japan and globally. Thief was as much about stealing treasure undetected as it was a survival horror in later levels, while the horror series Siren relied heavily on hiding from Shibito.

'I Didn't Think That We Had to Crush Nintendo' - the Father of PlayStation Says Revenge Was Never the Aim
"The story says I was super shocked and decided to take revenge".
The genesis of PlayStation is a story that is familiar to many people, even those who were lucky enough to be alive when it happened.
The narrative goes that, after being jilted by Nintendo over its SNES Play Station hardware, Sony decided to turn the project into a stand-alone competitor, and the rest is history; the 32-bit system triumphed over the N64 and Sony has cemented itself as Nintendo's biggest rival on the home console business.
