encountered a speedbump in my family domain plan: family does not like the domain i chose
so, few go-rounds and months later, *now* i have a domain for family stuff, to keep it mildly dissociated from my pseudonymous techie/lewd/anti-capitalist bullshit
first order of business: ryoms! going to reread my copy of @npub1ksf…r6s6's [run your own mail server](https://mwl.io/static/books/run-your-own-mail-server.html )
then decide if i build on the linux vps i have, or attempt to migrate it to a bsd os rn instead. leaning toward the former

getting blindsided over and over when someone whose values i thought i shared reveals they too love to wallow in slop feels like, idk, a hidden predilection to substance abuse?
so, surely our values weren't *that* alien? surely it isn't *entirely* down to moral failure? they're part of the population susceptible to the fascinating lies machine. and therefore what can really be said to or about linus?

RE: https://circumstances.run/@davidgerard/117441841785502664
the last dregs of my respect for linus evaporated in 2014 when he said fuck you tivoization is fine
for his legendary e-mail nastiness, i thought there was a time period where he got therapy, and improved?
when he started pushing slop, it was disappointing but betrayals by other people whom i had more respect for were bigger, more painful, surprises

yes!!!
(except the "we" part; *i* never wanted my menu bars discarded, dipshits at microsoft initiated that with the "ribbon" bullshit; leading into the whole rant about computer malfeasance misattributed to "us" or "programmers" versus "our bosses" or "the industry" or "perverse incentives of capitalism")
(but none of that is for you, you get it) ☺️

2026-10-20 20:55:06 UTC

the thing i want, the thing i have always wanted, for any new computer experience, is: a menu bar
i am sorry to say that my first independent exploration of a computer at age six was neither command line or gui, but ms-dos shell
in addition to the hierarchical filesystem view, it had a predefined hierarchy of actions in a menu bar
a tidy list of (ostensibly) everything you can make your computer do, organized into categories and subcategories

i've fallen way behind in my reading of a couple authors i support on patreon. i'd like to collect up all of their posts since sometime last year, so i can process them into epub for reading on my e-ink device
any recommendations for a patreon-downloader script or software?
i've tried two broken firefox extensions and am reluctant to try a couple pieces of software that have dependencies on c-sharp or nodejs
i would try talking to the api but you have to be a "creator" first

"commerce isn't (necessarily) capitalism"
anybody got a link to a thread or a blog discussing the distinction between capitalism (bad, extractive) and commerce (good or neutral, the mere exchange of money for goods and services)?
to hand to someone who doesn't read a lot of theory, or goes "so you anticapitalists barter everything?"
i know i've read something in this vein either on here or linked to from here but, of course, can't find it now
thanks in advance

any recommendations for reputable websites, for commissioning freelance artists?
i'm thinking like https://www.fiverr.com/ but i kindof get a bad smell from that site. felt super race-to-the-bottom hyper-competitive against colleagues without even providing good platform tools, and it's even more corporate now than when i used it years ago. it it as bad as it feels?
anyway i'd like to #commission an #artist who avoids ai, for a #vector #illustration
#noslop #neverslop

hell no i'm not buying during the ai-nflation. looks like dm-integrity (which makes this 2013 celeron absolutely crawl) is gonna get a field test...

who up despairing about their employability in an industry they find abhorrently revolting
despite an early all-consuming passion for the machines and their fascinating puzzle-like abstractions
and contained within them the potential for good and connection and community-building
and a compulsion to increase your symbiosis with them
there are so many of us
we are not the industry
i bet we rival whole cities in population
there has got to be a way to concentrate our collective will

i haven't sworn off free software, or copyleft, or any of that, because it does still seem necessary. but joining the choir: it is insufficient
and today the distinction between software that will vs. won't betray me no longer lies along the same divider as proprietary vs. free
i'm firmly in the non-betrayal camp, and it does my mental health mountains of good to see that many of you are too. but i don't know what we're calling it yet, i don't know what our banner looks like

i've long had beef with fsf for their stance of shunning proprietary software, forbidding its acolytes from talking about its existence, instead of education about *how* and *when* it can betray you
i play some proprietary games because i understand that although it has the power to betray me, i can weigh that against how likely it is to happen before i no longer care
more and more often lately i feel that same sense of betrayal from people using and even creating "free software"

not really a reply to ajroach42's excellent and deeply resonant thread today, just tangential
https://retro.social/@ajroach42/117208764034037052
the trait i've come to identify as most foul in proprietary software and everything non-free-software is: *betrayal.*
i avoid proprietary software because, eventually, it will betray me. it will do something against my interest in favor of its creator, or owner, or whomever is in control of the hardware it runs on.

the anti-feature filtering is already present, and works great, (you are given the freedom to override it.) it would be the mere addition of some more boolean attributes

first thing i'm putting there is a family- and friends-only walled-garden xmpp server, and after that gonna try running email service too. lets see how it goes

in the background of the thumbnail for this talk is the album cover for [ninajirachi's i love my computer](https://ninajirachi.bandcamp.com/album/i-love-my-computer )!! whose tracks "all i am" and "it's you" i listen to on loop for multiple hours at a time
with that plus christine's endorsement there's no way i'm not watching it

on the subject of computer services that are or aren't operated by bootlickers<li><a href="https://porkbun.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no">https://porkbun.com</a> is a domain registrar</li><li>it is owned by TopLevelDesign based in Oregon</li><li>they also own the .wiki, .ink, and .gay top-level domains</li><li>they donate 20% of revenue from .gay registrations to LGBTQ+ advocacy groups</li>
perhaps insufficient evidence here. but porkbun fares better than a few other companies in recent memory

anybody got a paragraph or three about what made cohost great, that you didn't experience with, say, fedi, aimed at those of us who never got into cohost?
was it a preference for the particulars of the ui, the length of posts? was it network effect, the people that happened to be on there? moderation policies? problems that fedi (or certain popular clients) have that cohost didn't?
i don't ask to bait argument. just daydreaming about what future social networks should look like
