Spent a few hours in the garden this afternoon and got the broad beans and lettuce planted.
This year’s brassica were in the way so i moved anything still alive into pots.
Some of them were lacinato kale i grew from stem cuttings
https://timeloop.cafe/@sus/116037319175350444
They performed pretty poorly this spring/summer and did not have very impressive root systems compared to the seed grown red russian kale. But they have been doing better this fall, so I decided to continue the experiment. I harvested most of the leaves and gave their pots a little fertilizer. We’ll see what they do over the next few months.
In retrospect, i think autumn would be a better time than fall to do stem cuttings for kale, because they won’t immediately throw everything they’ve got into trying to flower.
Last week i threw a bunch of compost around the tomatoes which will endure for another month or so and underplanted them with more lacinato kale and mustard greens i started from seed awhile back. Today i filled in the rest of the bed with lettuce that i’ll harvest over the winter to leave space for radish and arugula in february/march.
The compost i turned and layered last week is cooking now. The garden is starting to look like it’s fall with some yellow and brown leaves, fat spiders, and everything wet.

Even though I’m zone 9a, our summers don’t get warm enough for a lot of kitchen garden staples to do well.
It’s July here on the edge of the Salish Sea and we’re having mostly normal July weather - dry and warm. Our highs over the next 10 days will range from 17 to 24 degrees (that’s 63-75 for the USians).
Without a greenhouse, things like squash, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, okra, melons, sweet corn, and most tomatoes (esp larger ones) are puny and may not ripen at all. Heck you may struggle to get eggplant, okra, and peppers to even set fruit.
If you have a spot with excellent southern exposure that really gets blasted with sun all day during our very long summer days you can grow some of those things without a greenhouse if you’re willing to accept failures in about half the years.
Your instinct might be to try “northern” varieties, but they’re almost always bred for a short but hot growing season instead of a long, cool-to-warm growing season. In my experience, not a very successful strategy.
But also if you keep it watered, your lettuce won’t bolt even into July and you can harvest brassicas and beets and carrots all winter if you have the water to get them established in July. And a lot of beans do just fine. And berries! And potatoes do pretty well too.

It’s cool that search engines are so broken now and the web so flooded with content farm bullshit and government websites so poorly organized or with such limited search ability that the best way to surface things like government reports is often an llm chatbot

There’s a certain kind of article that well meaning people regularly send me about something I could try for my migraines.
They’re about a habit (listen to this specific frequency of sound!) or exercise (this extra slow yoga!) or diet (no dairy!) or supplement (moar electrolytes!) that can help migraines.
Newspapers - even mostly reliable ones - publish these articles constantly around migraine and other chronic illness. The treatments rarely have any scientific evidence supporting their use or actually have evidence showing they don’t work. Even when the article mentions this, it’s drowned out by an avalanche of positive quotes.
Do not share articles like this. Do not read articles like this. They are harmful and stigmatizing.
They are part of constructing the social norm where people with chronic illnesses are expected to try to get well forever and devote effectively infinite time, energy, and resources to the task.
It’s part of why it’s basically impossible for most people to understand that someone can stay sick and still deserve support and build a meaningful life. (You may think you don’t believe this, but consider how often you’ve shared those articles, or how all of our actual real systems in the real world treat disabled people.)
Articles like this also subtly and not so subtly do a bunch of other shitty things like
shift blame for the illness onto the sick person
create exhausting cycles of hope and disappointment
privilege anecdote over lived reality/epistemic injustice (i could run a large corporation with the number of people who refuse to believe yoga and veganism didn’t cure me) and related epidemic injustice (why do you believe an advertorial over the experience of me, a real person you have known for years with the disease)
undermine disability identity. (Some parts of illness are just physical suffering. Other parts are because you won’t give me giving accommodations. Don’t make my body the problem when the problem is you.)
obscures the actual state of medical knowledge. (This happens a lot with the breathless and overhyped reporting on real medical advances. Like a lot of chronic illnesses seem less difficult and scary than they actually are because of the ways these articles cling to progress and overcoming narratives)

Ate the first snow pea from the garden this year. I wasn’t irritating early enough and that really slowed them down, but hopefully they’ll get productive before it gets hot enough to knock them back.
Edit: peas needed irrigation, not irritation

If men want more attention in public, i suggest they swap giant pickup trucks for the more traditional poulaines. The extent to which shit we put in space is for direct and indirect military reasons is hard to get across to the average space nerd. I wish it weren’t so, but it’s for real and part of why nobody is doing jack about the satellite situation except writing whitepapers and experimenting with disabling other satellites.

The Canadian immigration system is better in many ways than the US one, but it also asks you for reams of impossible details while threatening you with deportation and etc if you get any of them wrong
This section requires me to list every border crossing I made into the USA from the day I was born until the date I became a citizen. That includes, for example, the time when I was two years old and my parents took me to Fort Lauderdale to visit my retired grandparents. This question comes after a screen where you attest that you will not make any omissions or errors, and that any such omission or error will be treated as an attempt to defraud the US immigration system, with the most severe penalties imaginable.

This is a great post about teaching and exams but i particularly appreciate this digression about email -
Most of my students don’t like email. … It turns out that by imposing Outlook with mandatory subscription to useless academic emails, we make sure that students hate email (Microsoft is on a mission to destroy email with the worst possible user experience).
I will never forgive the people who decided to migrate university mail servers to Outlook. This was both incompetence and malice on a terrifying level because there were enough warnings and opposition from very competent people at the time.

@nprofile…x9tq it doesn’t actually require them to see the homeless as deserving of help - if they just cared about the money, we’d house everyone for the cost savings.
That they aren’t housed even though we know it saves money means they’re willing to spend money to hurt homeless people.
They actively hate homeless and poor people and want to punish them.

Lots of flu going around right now.
The CBC is telling you to wash your hands and cough in your elbow and I’m not going to tell you not to do that.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/holidays-christmas-flu-season-tips-9.7026386
BUT Touching flu virus on a door handle isn’t likely to get you sick. Breathing it in is.
https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/influenza-general/risk-getting-flu-touching-contaminated-items-likely-low
Actually effective barriers to transmission for flu are the ones we take for Covid - clean the air, wear a mask.
So, at your holiday gatherings this week, crack a window, turn on vent fans in the kitchen and washroom, make sure your hvac fan is on, run a hepa filter, and quarantine anyone who seems sick in a bedroom - or at least put them in a good mask.

Do you remember how in the 90s there was chewing gum plastered on and flattened across basically all public surfaces? Where did it all go?
Do we chew less gum now? (Because we’re not all smoking constantly?) Or did we just get more polite about throwing it away? Or is there that much less foot traffic?

To write a whole article about increased school absences and blame it on mental health issues and bullying and not even mention Covid is astonishing.
We’ve added Covid to the mix of regular illnesses kids get, so of course there’s going to be more absences! And on top of that Covid causes and exacerbates mental health problems.
This is such painful and dangerous denial.

I don’t expect adaptations to be strict translation, but i feel like some of the changes in the show contradict the book in important ways. And i don’t know why they’d make these choices.
Like not tying the name choice to the traumatic event makes murderbot seem so much shallower. Or making it so that the preservation team (at least early on) treats murderbot like an appliance, which contradicts how principled they are in the books (and which is essential to the plot later?)
