Partner, #Veteran, puppy parent. I like lots of nerdy stuff, mostly indie games and #Linux. Oh, and science. And #ttrpgs. And… look, the Owlbear is a nerd, alright?

Also, I'm an Owlbear.

My profile picture is a character from a (modded) Starbound game - a pixel art character with goggles on her head.

I swear often. I also try to stay positive.

light mode hurts my eyes, but it is gorgeous. Do you have the extension that makes the top bar light themed as well?

So I'm trying out #GnomeOS and their new release thingy, and… y'all, they *gotta* do something about this security key nonsense.
During install, it generates a recovery key that is just over 64 characters long. If you need to input it (which I did after trying to a first boot update), you have to do it in a box that only displays about 16 characters at a time.
That would be annoying enough, but you have to do it with the letters obscured, so if you made a mistake, you have to start over. You can't double check your input or anything.
Also, I hope you noted that recovery key on a separate device!
Guys, I am 1000% with you that security is important and everything, but for Pharasma's sake, there MUST be another way to do this. Let me enter it in tty with an option for echo on or something. This is absurd.

So if you look down the thread here, you'll find that [@elementary](https://mastodon.social/@elementary ) and @npub1ncy…3x0q are like the first to comment with congrats and well wishes for Gnome.
(Incidentally, congrats on the release, Gnome, y'all worked really hard on this one)
This is, in my opinion, how the Open Source community *should* be: we support each other and celebrate our accomplishments. We don't tear down projects just because we don't like their goals, their UI, or their choice of init process or whatever.
It's a big world, and if the project leaders and community members aren't hurting anyone, that's good enough for me.

That was a lot of fun, fam. Some neat special effects, an incoherent script, bad accents, and a stern anti consumerism message. What's not to love?

I agree with everything you say in this thread.
I will, however, urge people to read the manual and search official wikis before asking. I know that asking the question is about more than just finding the answer, and community members should be welcoming, but writing all that documentation is *part* of being welcoming. It's the community tools at the bike cooperative.
Not using the manual/wiki is refusing the first offered hand of help.
Now, you may not find your answer, but you may find information that can help others solve your problem.
The other side of this, of course, is (as I said) complete agreement with your point. Folks need to not be jerks.

* **#Devuan** - Pro: Based on Debian, with access to basically everything (well, just about) made for Debian with few issues. CON: Also embracing xLibre. Like Debian, the packages tend to lag behind current. I don't get along well with APT.
* **#Void**: PRO - I know how runnit works, solid community, more up to date than Debian, less bleedy than Arch. CON: Has weird issues with my laptop's wireless card. Don't know if it would continue after install.
* **Any Given #BSD** - PRO: Super stability, would be like coming home after a long absence, since FreeBSD is where I started my OSOS journey. CON: Hardware compatibility issues, limited (compared to #Linux) native graphical software, bad for closed-source gaming (basically everything has to be run through WINE), community can be prickly (although I generally RTFM before asking).
Anyway, that's where I'm at. I could also give #Guix a shot, I suppose, but I need nonfree wireless globs or whatever and I don't have a physical ethernet port on my lappy/

Okay, I'm down to it here. I need to decide which non-#systemd OS I'm switching to (for the next five minutes, anyway; curse my DistroHopper nature...)
Here's the list I'm down to, although I am open to suggestions:
* **#Alpine**: PRO - Super fast and lightweight, I'm fairly familiar with the toolset; CON: Limited package set and support, no easy path for Noctalia/Dank install
* **#Artix**: PRO: Based on Arch with Arch tooling including Pacman and AUR access. Easy install. CON: Embracing #xLibre, which is run by a... fellow of questionable beliefs, let's be nice. Would have to do extra work to run Wayland instead with uncertain future

Visitor Q (2001)
Directed by Takashi Miike. This is the guy that gave us Ichi the Killer, Audition, and the original Japanese One Missed Call (along with a *ton* of kids content, disturbingly enough). And while I will cheerfully recommend any other movie he's ever done, I won't recommend Visitor Q.
It's well made, well written, well paced, well acted, and I never want to see it again. Anyone who's seen it knows why.

I want to not care what OS I'm using, but it does make a difference if you interact with stuff other than the DE.
I dislike graphical package management (although I've come around on that for Flatpaks using Bazaar or Discovery), for instance. Dealing with pacman, dnf, apt, apk, aur helpers, etc., are all different experiences. I've found I'm most comfortable with dnf or apk.
That's kind of a meaningless example; it's trivial to adjust to most package managers. Pacman is probably the most difficult of the ones I listed to get used to, and it's just learning what stuff stands for or memorizing a few things - and if you get lost, man pacman or the Arch Wiki will set you right in like five minutes. But it's a part of the system that varies quite a bit between distros.
That said - I hear you. The underlying system doesn't matter as much if you're 99% using gui desktop apps.

I haven't used it as a daily driver in probably 15 years. Despite that, it was, and is, my go-to recommendation for people wanting to get into Linux.
Mint is easily the most beginner friendly distro out there, and the Cinnamon desktop is familiar and comfortable for anyone coming from Windows.
I'll admit that immutable systems might eventually take the top of my recommendations, but Mint is an amazing distro with a friendly dev team and a lovely and supportive community.

So... @npub1hpw…cd0d has made a policy explicitly allowing AI code. So I have to change my home distro.
@npub1ht4…5c0x and @npub1ug0…dw2r both have specific policies against it, but I ain't about doing a Gentoo install (sorry, guys, I love you for this, but I need a binary first distro), and NetBSD ain't great for gaming AFAIK.
So... any other Distros wanna step up and do the right thing? @npub13yw…77zg? @npub1djg…3wvl? @npub1lxt…4044? #VoidLinux? @npub1cml…cwhf?
Just a public statement that says "No, we don't want that crap" would be plenty --- I understand the difficulty of enforcing the policy, but setting it as a community/commit standard would go a long way towards making a lot of us feel better.

Fucking finally got Fedora 43b to boot into a live system on my laptop. Turns out, I had to disable PTT in UEFI, something that I've never had to do before.
Of course, PTT doesn't do anything for Linux anyway, so having it on was pointless and probably caused some other issues.
Maybe.
Who the hell knows? I don't. I didn't even know what PTT was before today.

So I'm kinda liking the idea of a #Declarative OS - that is, one where I can edit a config file (or whatever) to indicate the basic system setup, apps, gsettings (since I'm a Gnomie) and so on. Then hit "Update" or "Deploy" or whatever, reboot, and there's the system, as specified.
THEN... I can take that file over to another computer and BOOM, same setup, same apps, same basic desktop setup, etc.
#BlendOS does this with an easily editable yaml file. #NixOS does this with a .nix file that is significantly more complicated, but also more powerful.
Anyone know any other OSes like that?

Well, it was my half century birthday today. The Owlbear is bound for bed, but it wasn't a bad day, all things considered.
I got to run my Pathfinder game tonight, which was a plus. As we went into an encounter, I suddenly realized that it was the first time in my nearly forty year history of GMing spanning back to Redbox D&D, that I had used Mimics in an encounter.
It was kinda hilarious and the bard ended up making friends with one of the mimics.
Anyway, goodnight all. Be kind, drink water.

* K-On!
* The two Alien movies (Alien and it's sequel, Aliens). I'm so glad they never made more.
* TTRPG design
* Trying to support LGBTQIA2S+ folks
