the head of IT where I work is a lifelong gamer, and he has a daughter who has been living in Japan for the last couple of years (teaching English I think)
today he summoned me to his office (all serious like, I thought I was in trouble for a sec) and I was given some really cool Persona 5 Tactica and Persona 3 Reload stuff! she came home for Christmas and brought a load of Japanese videogame merch for him, and he's well aware just how obsessed I am with these games 😄
so cool! 😁

this is what I absolutely hate about reading manga: just finished Battle Angel Alita: Last Order Omnibus volume 5, which is the final omnibus volume. But the story doesn't finish
so after some searching it turns out I now have to buy individual volumes 16-19 to get the end of the story, and volumes 16 and 17 are out of print
wtf are Kodansha even doing? is this a troll? keep the omnibus volumes in print but don't complete the story and the let the final individual issues go OOP 😡

@nprofile…zw3r there are five films in the original series, then another three in the "new" series. all released in two years 😳

2025-01-03 22:14:32 UTC

for my Friday night movie I watched "New Battles Without Honor and Humanity" (dir. Kinji Fukasaku, 1974)
the 6th film in the series released in the span of 2 years (!) this film was released to capitalise on the success of the original series, and features all the same actors. standout performance for me is Tomisaburo Wakayama ("Lone Wolf and Cub") as Aoki, who is one scary mf
easily my favorite series of films, this is a fantastic yakuza movie

@nprofile…zw3r one of the best things I like about Firefox on mobile is the "open links in a private tab" setting, which means every random link I click on like a news story on a site I'm never going to visit again doesn't get to store any tracking info about me after I close the tab
it's a minor annoyance for sites where I need to be logged in, but copying and pasting links works ok for the few times I need to do that

#GOTY here's my picks for the top 5 games I played in 2024, one very surprising omission and one not-at-all a surprise!
at number 5 we have #Yomawari Night Alone
the only Nippon Ichi game on the list this year, after they took 3/5 slots last year! this game was originally released for the Vita in 2015, and then ported to Switch in 2018. I played it a few weeks ago after finally getting my hands on a physical copy as part of "The Long Night Collection" which includes the sequel "Midnight Shadows" that I am yet to play
Nippon Ichi are probably my favorite developer/publisher after ATLUS because they constantly release games that are seemingly made just to appeal to me. The Yomawari games are isometric survival horror games with a pretty unique art style and atmosphere, and I just love them. there's no combat and the gameplay revolves around exploration and puzzle solving, with ghosts and ghouls taken from Japanese folklore. very atmospheric, play in the dark! recommended

@nprofile…er6e @nprofile…gdmu and even if they somehow manage to hit 60fps with RT on, during gameplay you hardly notice unless you specifically go looking for it, as your attention is on what is actually happening in the game and not "ooh the shading on that wall looks very realistic"
the fact that they even need side by side videos of the technology in action shows how pointless it is

Romancing Saga 2 on Switch mostly plays fine, outside of menus. textures pop in a lot, in typical Unreal Engine fashion, but gameplay is pretty smooth for the most part
but the menus, especially the quest list, jfc the menu lag is real. just scrolling through your quests is painful. and the load times, ugh
so yeah, after 5 or so hours I'm already finding excuses to play something else, I'll persevere for a bit but the story hasn't grabbed me yet so I'll probably end up dropping it
all I want from the Switch 2 is better performance and faster loading times. oh and that little book from the 3DS that recorded all your playtime in every game

last night I watched "Shogun's Samurai" (aka "The Yagyu Conspiracy") (dir. Kinji Fukasaku, 1978)
it's not available on blu-ray in the UK yet, so I picked up an old Eureka DVD from ebay for £4 😄 the quality of the DVD is great and it looked perfectly fine upscaled to 1080p
another absolute classic from Fukasaku, he's rapidly becoming my fav director! again this is another who's who of actors who appeared in loads of his other films throughout the 1970s and 80s; Hiroki Matsukata, Nobuo Kaneko, Mikio Narita, and loads more, I love trying to spot them under all the makeup and period costumes 😅
Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba is great as Jubei Yagyu (the same role he played in "Samurai Reincarnation", also by Fukasaku, in 1982) and there were some superb gory fight scenes

I may have mentioned it before but I absolutely fucking *love* these old Yakuza movies. "Japan Organised Crime Boss" (dir. Kinji Fukasaku, 1969) is the tragic story of an aging jaded mobster bound by a code of honor to murder a load of guys 😅
Koji Tsuruta is excellent as the lead. also starring Tomisaburo Wakayama in a typically unhinged role, and the first time Fukasaku worked with Bunta Sugawara who went on to star in the "Battles Without Honor and Humanity" series a few years later

@npub1h29…gq7w my fridge has started making a really *weird* noise sometimes, before I knew what it was I was convinced it was coming from next door and I spent ages just listening to it trying to work out wtf they had in their kitchen. was it one of their kids playing a videogame?
then my brother was round one day and it happened and he just said "your fridge sounds weird" like he just immediately pinpointed where the sound was coming from 😅

@npub1h29…gq7w I dunno, if you were waiting for a cancer diagnosis like the poor lady in the news story I can imagine you'd be pretty freaked out, the envelope looks totally genuine until you spot the characters in the barcode
I used to get loads of cool stuff from Sony around that time

2024-11-08 14:27:46 UTC

that post from @npub1h29…gq7w about the controversial UK ad for Wipeout reminded me of another Sony campaign from around the same time that they got in big trouble for
they sent out convincing fake medical test results with fake x-rays advertising PlayStation games
I found an old BBC News post from 1998 about it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/200628.stm
I went looking, and I still have mine! a cool piece of PlayStation memorabilia from back in the day

by far the most important thing about any new Persona game (for me) is the soundtrack. Shoji Meguro and the rest of the ATLUS Sound Team work absolute magic in my ears and the music lives on long after I have finished with the actual games. it's no secret that I am *obsessed* with the music from the Persona games
anyway, here's a soundtrack sampler for the Episode Aigis DLC for Persona 3 Reload

ugh, you really get a sense of how stage managed YouTube is when an embargo lifts and all the channels you follow post preview videos about the same game at the same time
yesterday my entire feed was "we've played Echoes of Wisdom" videos

ooh Arrow are releasing the original Tomie movie from 1998, horror isn't really my thing these days but I'll make an exception for this one

does anyone know somewhere in the UK I can get custom sized acrylic box protectors from? I have a couple of expensive DVD-sized-but-a-bit-thicker things that I want to keep safe
I found https://retroboxed.com but they're in the EU so would probably work out quite expensive. I'll use them if I can't find anything UK based though

2024-08-27 17:21:53 UTC

of course I went looking for a soundtrack CD, love the translated film titles at the bottom right 😆 this is from 1995 and long out of print

just electric film making, even now 50 years later
