Yes. That's what your #SciFi #cyberpunk urban area looks like. What does your futuristic rural area look like? Even if your food is largely indoor hydroponics, your elite will want a country estate with plenty of the thing that no-one else has. Space and greenery.

How did you develop your voice?
.
My voice? I don't have much time for my voice with all these characters whirling around in my head, each speaking in their own, unique voices. Hazards of being an actor. All the great characters from history in my head and they won't shut up.

Tell us about inspiration from an unlikely source.
I was at PaxAus playtesting one of my #boardgames. I have no recollection of how the topic came up but one of my testers came up with the phrase Vampire Butterflies.
They are now in my current WIP: Sword of Hadoor.

Our next featured creator enjoys hiking. Do you enjoy being outdoors, and if so, does it have an impact on your creativity?
I used to hike all over London in the thin green spaces between the roads and buildings. There are quite a few nice little trails. Now I live in Tasmania, there are so many more nice trails, and way less pollution.

2026-10-23 22:39:15 UTC

Our next featured creator enjoys making maps. Have you ever made a map?
Battlemaps frequently, to keep track of complex scenes (not just battles)
There will definitely be maps in front of Sword of Hadoor, as the world needs reframing into a new historical context.

How cerebral do you consider your creative work?
I get these weird people in my head, usually doing something strange. Strong images that start the work , or form the emotional turning point. Writing these out gives me an idea of which one's worth pursuing. I tend to deconstruct afterwards, then that helps with the edit and where the overall arc is going.

"Do you include details in your work that are important to you even though no one else will likely notice?"
Tempting as it is after doing all the historical research etc, to throw it all in the novel, I have to be more circumspect about what I include. There some things that I just throw in for flavour because I really needed to point out this little detail, but most of it's there because it needs to be.

When describing the big things in your world, also remember to include the kind of small, human details that will make it feel real. Graffiti. A drunk's pool of vomit. The safety card in the back of the seat.

What seemingly insignificant object in your story carries a lot of weight?
Weird Magic Sword Alt-History novel:
"It had always been a cane. Ask anyone there. A simple cane of beautiful craftsmanship. A shop-keep's bit of finery, or a banker's favourite old walker. Could be carried to church by a carpenter or councilman."

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, what is your favourite colour of ice cream?
Mint choc-chip. It's the contrast between the little dark dots within the vibrant, neon mint.

“Do you track your word count? How? Why?”
I've found it's beneficial to have a wordcount tracker built into the software I use (Scirvener). I set my daily wordcount low, so I can pass it easily, and then I feel good about writing, which encourages more writing. The tracker for overall wordcount lets me know when I've done enough to call the "Book" finished, and also if I've gone over the limit on a short story. Mostly, I don't even notice it.

Who's the wealthiest person in your story?

Nature is beautiful. But that's no fun. Way more interesting is nature turned bad. When the plants start eating the animals, when the lake is the only source of water but it's filled with dangerous creatures, when the rain that falls is acid. What other examples can you think of for nature gone bad?

How do you think where you live affects your creative work?
During the pandemic, I lost my flat and all my work in London, moved in with my parents who live in rural Tasmania, on the other side of the planet.
There's a distinct lack of acting work in rural Tasmania. So, I started writing more seriously as an outlet. I'm still in Tasmania, and kind of want to move somewhere more stimulating, but two books and five novellas later, it's been great for my writing.#books

#WritersCoffeeClubTalk about a time you realised something about a writer through their works
Reading Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and I realised these fascist cunts don't even think at all. They just make up utterly ridiculous bullshit to justify their nasty, mean, hate-filled lies about their own superiority. How anyone can read that book and think it presents anything approaching a valid viewpoint is baffling, but also very sad.
