I'm seeing openness to age verification laws within some left of center organizing spaces 😱
Folks, we gotta talk to our people to kill this harmful policy. Regulate dangerous big tech practices, not people!
LGBTQ+ kids in hostile environments suffer when they can't access community online.
Age verification also facilitates excluding representation of marginalized folks. Also, it is at odds with the right to repair — shouldn't we own our devices, and not the other way around?

It is appalling to see people conflate "pay me for my work because I must survive" with "selling out."
That attitude is too common on fedi, one of the more problematic inheritances from the early days of FOSS.
There is no virtue in suffering. And relying solely on volunteer labor is a demand that people suffer, or that contributors only be people of privilege.

We celebrated May as Maintainer Month the last few years.
But Big Tech gets ever more extractive: we're seeing reductions of in-kind and financial support of FOSS foundations and maintainers. And all the people who founded Maintainer Month have been laid off by their employers. Employers, it should be said, who talk a big game about supporting FOSS.
A better world is possible, but we ain't getting there through capitalism or for-profit tech companies.
Now's a good time to dig into co-ops.

For reference, here's the CDC's list of what qualifies someone as high risk, such that one would still qualify for a COVID booster even under their new framework: https://www.cdc.gov/covid/risk-factors/index.html
Asthma, ADHD, and autism are on the list, and I bet you didn't expect at least two of those.
But again, CDC guidance precludes pharmacists from requiring evidence that you are high risk. Which is to say, the list doesn't really matter, go get vaccinated!

To make text of my subtext: get vaccinated. You're high risk, right? Yes. Yes you are.
Get vaccinated for the sake of everyone around you, if not for yourself.

2025-05-20 18:02:57 UTC

New FDA guidance limits COVID boosters to 65+ and "high risk" people.
Practically speaking: LOTS of people are high risk, and pharmacists still aren't supposed to ask you for evidence that you're high risk. Indeed they didn't ask when I got my spring booster.
Fewer people are going to get vaccinated. It's up to us, who know better, to get boosted to protect ourselves and those around us.

Hey fedi, anyone got some tips, war stories, or resources they can share regarding setting up #Pixelfed in a Docker container? :boost_please:
Update: Got a good lead here, but would still love to hear from folks! https://jippi.github.io/docker-pixelfed/

One of my favorite things: FOSS founders/BDFLs transferring a project's trademarks over to a communally governed nonprofit.
It's an act of selflessness and visionary leadership that gives a project the opportunity to become a truly public good.
Good on ya, @nprofile…g8jv 👏🏻

Woke up to see that the Good Place Shirtposting meme group on Facebook is now setting shop on Reddit 🎉
Reddit is no panacea but I'll take what I can get. This is the first time any large FB group I'm in has made such a move. At the same time, scores of friends are coming to the fediverse and deactivating their FB accounts.
Migrations like this are lossy and painful, but it's always worth celebrating when one draws a boundary and refuses to accept more toxicity.

All the name change related infra updates gave me a great excuse to finally, and fully, get settled in with @nprofile…cnxx.
And wow it has come a long way! I've got it on my laptops and desktop as well as my phone, and it's playing nice with all my inboxes and calendars.
Huge thanks to everyone who contributes #Thunderbird!
