does it help if i tell you that the device which was working with a 64-bit rsa key is a switch that is now in a datacenter connected to the internet

i wanted to fact check a baseless assertion about computers on the internet i did not intend to be reminded that humans are interconnected with technology, that everyone's life is an infinitesimal part of humanity, that life is fleeting and so noisy as to be nearly meaningless

top ten weird thing about the computer is that it doesn't really matter how much you know about it you'll still get randomly humbled like every few weeks by, whoops, surprise, i had a filename wrong the whole time, or i wasn't actually building what i thought i thought i was, or whatever
you get better at figuring out which way the computer has humbled you today, but overall i'd rate the experience of trying to make it do what i mean as "excruciating"

last one: the "it is time to build local communities and dual power and help each other weather the coming years" posts reek of the same strain of quasi-individuality that preppers cope with.
it's not wrong! it's important to do that thing! but the local communities and dual power aren't gonna outmobilize the national guard or the LRADs or whatever else. we saw that. we've already been there. my local community isn't going to outdo the NIH or FDA or NOAA or .... you need both things. you need both things. need.
but sometimes ig it's important to find something to latch on to other than being trapped in a box with an awful lot of people that wouldn't mind eating you.
only took me half an hour to figure out how to say that without being punchy and i'm not sure i made the mark. and no one i'd say that to will see it! oh well! i'm done, good night!

"What If What Wins Is The Racist Vote At The Cost Of All The Young Leftists Opting Out Of Elections" is a coherent take from this, right. it all sucks! but if the PSL vote is so small it's at the bottom of "other candidates", lmao, who gives a shit about the leftist turnout

2024-11-06 09:03:01 UTC

thinking back to the old "democrats are going to look at this and think `i've got to be more racist`" gallows humor post that went around smug-adjacent-style in lefty circles for a while
and seeing a lot of people who spent the last few months talking about how they can't in good conscience vote in this election because genocide or cop president or whatever (who are coincidentally now talking about how they may be at risk and are Building Community To Resist What Is Coming)
and kind of wishing a lot of people would shut the fuck up about what they think is or isn't a winning strategy

they should invent a bash that has the `volatile` keyword. "volatile" files are files where bash buffers writes and performs them all at once or not at all, and reads are performed all at once or not at all. "volatile" files probably can't be larger than 512b or 4096b or PIPE_BUF or something

if you are a company whomst maintains documentation for an isa, a very mean way to write your documentation would be to specify bit fields as a mix of `l` and `i` but with all letters bold so it looks like this

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as AVX512, is in fact, AVX512/F+CD+VL+DQ+BW+VNNI, or a I've recently taken to calling it, "Cascade Lake". Cascade Lake is not an instruction set unto itself, but rather another proprietary component of a fully functioning x86-64 CPU made useful by the baseline amd64 instruction set, AVX extensions, and vital interconnects comprising a full personal computer as defined by IBM.
Many computers run a modified version of AVX512 every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of AVX512 which is widely used today is often called AVX512-F,
