Strider’s morning hike revealed that they are too far north, so he and the hobbits have spent the day struggling east, then following a valley southeast. Now the valley has dead-ended in a high ridge. They decide to attempt the climb despite Frodo’s wound.

At dusk, the Company finally halts. They debate whether to travel under the mountains through the Mines of Moria. Gandalf says he once passed through Moria alive. Aragorn says that he has, too, but ‘the memory is very evil.’ Pippin comments, ‘I don’t wish to enter it even once.’

Just ahead of the nearest Rider, Asfaloth splashes into the Ford and carries Frodo across. The Nine pause at the water’s edge.
The Nazgûl-Lord himself rides forward into the river.
Frodo lifts his sword—‘By Elbereth and Lúthien the Fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!’

‘All that is gold does not glitter
Not all those who wander are lost

Strider knows the rhyme from Gandalf’s letter!
‘I am Aragorn son of Arathorn and if by life or death I can save you, I will.’

For a third morning, Minas Tirith is in darkness. A messenger arrives to report the fall of Osgiliath: the forces of Mordor now hold both banks of the Anduin, and Faramir has retreated to the Causeway Forts. Gandalf rides out to oppose the terror wielded by the Witch-king.

Aragorn halts their pursuit for a moment when he sees hobbit-prints veer from the main track of the Orcs. Where the prints end, he finds the elven-brooch that Pippin dropped: at least one Hobbit was still alive at this point. With Legolas and Gimli he continues the chase.

Elrond sends scouts to learn whether any Nazgûl still lurk near Rivendell. Bilbo notes that this will delay the journey until winter:
‘When winter first begins to bite
and stones crack in the frosty night,
when pools are black and trees are bare,
’tis evil in the Wild to fare.’
