@npub1z8r…mrq6 I'm about to move off-grid with very limited and intermittent internet access. I was wondering if you have any tips for dealing with Linux updates when you go back online? I am amazed at the binary size of everything in a linux distro these days. Every time I go online I'm 500 MB to 3 GB out of date, and I haven't even installed very much. 😒
Specific distro/package manager?
Just ignore it all?
Move to 9front?

My Pixel 4a has stopped charging even after giving the USB port a good scrub. I feared the worst, that the fragile USB-C connector has given up the ghost. But then I accidentally discovered that the phone will charge when it's off (the basic bootloader lightning bolt icon). So now in order to charge it, I have to reboot. It continues charging when the OS comes up, but once I unplug the cable, it won't charge again until I get back to the bootloader.
I'm so glad that we have converged on the standard that allows both tiny dust particles AND software bugs to prevent you from, ya know, making a closed circuit.
So tell me, would you rather have a device with the good old fashioned barrel jack, or should we just go all the way and have alligator clips?

Okay! Here are the results!
A: 568 psi (removed after 3 days)
B: 460 psi (removed after 6 days)
C: 599 psi (removed after 9 days)
D: 386 psi (removed after 1 day)
All of these are within the expected 300 - 700 psi range, so this was a great success! 599 psi means the press had to apply 7,527 pounds of force to crush a 4" diameter cylinder. That's a lot!
Surprisingly the one with the worst compaction was the strongest. Looking back at my records, I see that I left it in the form for 9 days (it was still damp when I removed it). It appears that curing time is a very important factor.
Curing in the form for 9 days presents a challenge for construction, as I'd like to move on to the next wall section sooner than 9 days. I think I need another test comparing curing in the form vs. periodic watering for a few days to see how well that fully hydrates the cement.

i should have known you had a page dedicated to your woodstove!! very helpful info, this is a strong contender.
i see on their site they say "Rule of Thumb: 15 x Volume of Space to Heat = Reqd. BTU's." Is that volume in cubic feet? i assume you are warm enough through the whole winter?
what's your experience with how clean it burns? how much smoke smell indoors? how much creosote buildup?

why are american wood stoves so fucking ugly? i can't afford to import a nice european stove; tariffs probably...

Hot take: someone high up at apple is pushing the liquid glass bullshit hard because it's more GPU intensive and it will help them accelerate their hardware obsolescence schedule.

OH! Yeah, there's no wind down in our ravine unforunately. It's like a canyon/hollow.

yeah we have wind but harnessing it might be very challenging. It's not very consistent. Either nothing or roaring. From my limited understanding, the electronics required to handle that are not cheap because they have to handle huge surges when a gust hits.
I am bummed that we don't have running water with any significant drop. If we did I'd be installing a turbine immediately.

Built this little contraption for pumping water from our ravine to our field. 100 watt panel, 12 volt regulator, and a 70 watt water pump. Works great in full sun, pumping water about 175 linear feet with 40 vertical feet of lift! ☀️

Y'all writing software with a write-compile-run development loop, how do you do it better than:
Ctrl-S to save
Alt-Tab to terminal
make↵
./bin/something↵
(play with program)
(close program)
Alt-Tab back to editor
Is there some kind of vim, emacs, helix, etc. workflow that reduces the number of steps for all that? What am I looking for?

We've moved to a very isolated place in the mountains inhabited by some very sad, lost people. In the coming years we will build an earth house and start a wonderful farm, but today is weird. So grateful to see all of you here doing your thing and sharing good vibes to ease my temporary discomfort.

It hit me recently that maybe I should rewrite the transactions as Scheme files, because code is data/data is code. Then I can just run each transaction through an interpreter with a minimal support library rather than compiling my JSON-parsing thing for each platform that it needs to run on. Good idea? I have very little Lisp/Scheme experience. Knee-jerk reactions welcome. (2/2)

I have written an internal system for my business that translates JSON files describing retail transactions (items, quantities, taxes, discounts, payment methods, etc.) into #plaintextaccounting ledger format so that they can be integrated and balanced with my other finances. (1/2)
