Sorry I'm not an expert.
What does dropping hardware support from AOSP mean?
Does it mean google removed code that allowed AOSP to run on actual hardware by removing hardware descriptions and drivers, leaving AOSP a generic "driverless" OS?

This is correct.
Just because they were prevented from delivering the aid and were kidnapped, doesn't mean they didn't do huge good.
A huge number of people noticed, and saw the injustice in Palestine, and some even looked past the official propaganda to learn about the real history.
Even the mockery from the "right wing media" eg Sky Australia, caused people to look deeper.
And that is a huge success.

Need some help.
-----
I know that to prove P ⇒ Q, I assume P and derive Q.
----
Now to prove
(A⇒B) ⇒ ((B⇒C) ⇒ (A⇒C))
I need to assume (A⇒B) and derive ((B⇒C) ⇒ (A⇒C)).
But I can't seem to make progress from (A⇒B) alone, I think I need to assume A is true as well.
----
Intuitively the statement makes total sense. But drawing the derivation as per image attached using elim and intro rules, I get stuck unless I assume A too.
Can anyone help clarify my thinking?

but you have made me think we can't use type variables like this....

What's the type of the following term?
λxyz . (xz)(yz)
If we say
x: A
y: B
z: C
The type of the term is I think
A → B → C → (AC)(BC)
But something tells me this is not using the fact that B and A must be arrow types themselves.

I've only just learned about the fixed point theorem for untyped lambda calculus.
I'm actually still surprised that "normal" maths functions don't always have a fixed point but lambda term functions always do.
My brain likes to think in terms of "no free lunch" and ask what liberty allowed this. My guess is the fact that beta-equality is a lot more liberal than "maths" equality allows things like the fixed point theorem to happen.

Do you think the (ongoing) success of Lean is a positive example of PL research?
From what I can tell it is seeing significant growth and positive excitement in the maths community - at the top end with people like Terence Tai using and championing it, and Kevin Buzzard running an effort to formalise Fermat's Last Theorem... And at the other end, it being taught to undergraduates.
Lean formalisation had already found errors in published proofs.
Without PL research, no lean.

learning the basics of λ-calculus
book says the term λx. (x x) has 4 sub terms :
λx. (xx)
(xx)
left x in (x x)
right x in (x x)
BUT not the x in λx
why is this?
is it because the y in λy (something) is only pointing out which variable in (something) is the "abstract" variable, or the one that takes on values to whatever (something) is applied to?
in which case why is λx. (x x) different to (xx) ?

I wonder how do-able (for a beginner like me) it would be to write a simple #maths proof checker in #python
It wouldn't be an expression evaluator - it would be using the theory of propositions-as-types
I mean really minimal
- maybe just proving that a numerical sum is correct
4 + 5 = 9
- or maybe proving a simple algebraic identity if correct
(x + y)(x - y) = x^2 - y^2
Maybe it's the case that even to do the above needs huge machinery to be implemented anyway.

All talk from the EU.
No action.
And not just no action, they continue to be complicit, selling arms, providing diplomatically cover, taking part in the propaganda.

#haskell advice needed
puzzling out monads ...
---
occurrences :: (Eq a) => [a] -> State [(a,Int)] Int
occurrences [] = do
l <- get
return (length l)
occurrences (x:xs) = do
count x
occurrences XS
---
Q1a Why does `get` only get the first part of the monad, the list ?
Q1b Is this the "state", the s in `State s a` ?
Q2a Why does `return` only update the second part of the monad, the integer ?
Q2b Is this the "value", the a in `State s a` ?

#typesetting - most people think of TeX and LaTeX - but it goes further back
1964 - RUNOFF used on CTSS then Multics
1971 - roff for Unix, printed the man pages for unix 1 to 3, Bell Labs used it for documents
1972 - nroff for terminals and fixed-width printers - also used for today's man pages, except OpenBSD and MacOS which uses mandoc
~1972 - troff primarily for typesetting systems eg for making books. Attached image is output.

Germany, the second largest exporter of arms to Israel.
Germany who issued an arrest warrant for a British surgeon who helped people in Gaza - to stop him testifying.
Germany, which wants to deport anti genocide activists who have not been convicted of any crime.
That Germany?

This young girl just wants to go back to brushing her hair.
But 80% of the Israeli public don't want that.
And too many in the UK, US and Germany are finding ways to blame her for her mistreatment.

is Tusky still the best app for #mastodon ?
I chose it ages ago when some people thought it was better than the official app.
I ask now because I notice the web ui renders some `code` properly but the Tusky doesn't
myself I value good UX/UI so happy to have a less functional but more pleasant app

yes its the service for finding a misplaced phone
enabling permission in Google Play services seem very broad - is it possible to only allow those permission for this specific purpose and not generally?
That is, enabling it generally would mean any app could use google play services to use location and network connectivity if enabled?

2025-04-22 15:00:58 UTC

Hi @nprofile…m8mr
It appears "find my phone" doesn't work even when I have google play services installed.
I understand the default should be to avoid location tracking.
Is there a way to enable this or to solve the problem a different way?

The picture in the linked post shows prisoners suffering in the El Salvador prison.
https://mastodon.social/@VeroniqueB99/114355430606319999
It shows far more suffering and graphic imagery than the short video of a fully clothed Palestinian baby with no blood/gore injuries being dusted with wipes.
The #mastodon social admins censored the truth about Palestine. But they don't act against images about El Salvador's prison.
Double standards.
Their place in history will be one of shame.

Good point.
Can you think of a Hollywood film, not aimed at children, that does not feature guns.
It's a real challenge.
It's kinda shocking how movie posters have guns displayed prominently.
There's a message in there somewhere to the rest of the world about the American psyche.

Many have accepted the USA's primary role in the genocide
not enough understand Europe's role eg
* Germany is the 2nd largest exporter of weapons to Israel
* Hungary has violated the ICC's warrant to arrest Netanyahu
* Germany wants to deport activists who have not been convicted of any crime
* Germany issued an arrest warrant for a British doctor to stop him from speaking the truth about his experience in Gaza
* UK operates surveillance flights over Palestine, intel feeding Israel

Dear mastodon social moderators
History will remember what you did when the truthful history of this genocide is written.
And you will be remembered in disgrace and shame.
This is not an error. This is a pattern.

⚠️ Mastodon social AGAIN removing posts that show the truth of the genocide.
The post was not sexual nor was it violent. The video was broadcast on normal TV by a channel that is careful to censor actual violent imagery.
Again the German mastodon social moderators show their bias. Fucking disgraceful.
We know some people are maliciously flagging posts - the moderators should have learned not to be Israel's propaganda puppets by now.
Disgrace to humanity.

The #haskell mooc I'm doing is introducing IO but imho not very well.
I'm confused by the following snippet:
-------
ghci> val1 <- putStrLn "hello"
hello
ghci> val1
()
ghci> val2 = putStrLn "bye"
ghci> val2
bye
-----
val2 is easy I think. val2 is putStrLn "bye" and when prompted to represent itself the output is "bye", I guess the IO is "executed".
but val1 I don't get.
what is <- and why does it produce and output on the repl? and what is () ?

another beginner #haskell question
I have a type as follows:
data UpDown = IncCounter Int | DecCounter Int
I have to write a "getter"
the following getter seems inelegant
get :: UpDown -> Int
get (IncCounter n) = n
get (DecCounter n) = n
I was trying something like
get (UpDown n) = n
but that doesn't work as I can only pattern match on constructors not types
as a beginner, should I leave it as it is? (it passes the mooc test system)
