Even if it was "just a boost" at some moment. We did this all together.
Of course, #GazaVerified deserves a documentary (isn't here anybody with the spoons to do this?). Totally awesome accomplishment that made the world a little less bad.

EnBW ist also fast komplett in öffentlicher Hand.

Food for thought...

a) sadly, the impressive growth in renewable energy is still mainly just offsetting the growth in consumption. Here, bolder policies would be required, but some sectors and industries have better lobbying power than others.
b) electrification of heating, industrial processes and mobility would require smart policies by smart politicians, and I am sure you are following the actions of the actual government in Germany, especially by Katharina Reiche who is responsible for this area.
c) energy storage and grid connectivity, necessary for the transformation of the energy system is not happening at scale.
d) because of ideology and dysfunctional short-term incentives in decision-making, cost-effective energy efficiency measures are not implemented.
Main obstacle is short-sighted/corrupt* politicians.
Because, although the market does some things (and in the case of energy production, even in the correct direction), this highly complex sector requires structural policies to get things done.
* corruption can take many forms, e.g. in the form of revolving doors as promises for later employment as consultant.

🌾Online Event- Farm Workers in South Africa and the Struggle for Justice 🌾
with Carmen Louw and Stephmarie Pekeur, hosted in collaboration between Women on Farms Project and the Farmers Without Borders
🗓️ *Tuesday, 14.04.2026 at 6pm (CEST/SAST)*
💻 *Online – Please register here:* https://uni-kassel.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/9vBMIT2RRoC3fywYyBAr3g
South Africa’s agricultural sector is deeply integrated into global markets, supplying supermarkets worldwide with products such as table grapes and wine. Yet many (women) farm workers and farm dwellers behind these exports face precarious working and living conditions. On many farms, ownership and power remain concentrated among white farm owners, and everyday relations are still characterised by reflect inequalities rooted in apartheid.
This online event explores the realities of life and work on South African farms. We will discuss power dynamics in the agricultural sector, the role of agribusiness, housing and living conditions, gendered experiences of farm labour, and how women workers navigate growing precarity. The conversation also highlights how farm workers and dwellers organize, resist, and raise their voices, while inviting reflection on the global food system and ongoing struggles for dignity, labour rights, and justice on farms.
*Carmen Louw* is the Women on Farms Project Co-Director and *Stephmarie Pekeur* is a Seasonal Farm Worker.
We are looking forward to share this space with agricultural practitioners, food rights activists and friends from the food sovereignty movements. You are warmly invited to join us and are welcome to share the invitation with your networks!

I am not sure whether my antimilitarism will allow me to appreciate the possibly good ideas and analysis in the book.
In the US you have a very special, glorifying perspective on the military and veterans that is not easy to resonate for others, to say the least. I don't mean this as an attack, just an observation.
Anyway, from what I understand, the main argument of the book (war, with it's small groups, connectedness and surviving danger is closer to 'historical' human experiences) might share some parallels with stuff I was thinking about:
Under certain circumstances, natural disasters might have a positive effect on communities and society in general. The common experience of the disruption of the current system, mutual aid and solidarity, survival as a group etc. might bring people together again. Neoliberal individualism and reliance on anonymous services by institutional actors (governments & corporations) are pushed back by reality. Of course, for this experience to be 'positive', the trauma and material & human damage can't be too extreme.
But in some cases, the experience of a disasters can leave behind a fabric of human reliance.
And here we might be again in the similarity with Junger's book, except that I suppose that to perceive a war experience as a 'positive experience' you need a lot of psychological/ideological coping mechanisms to dissociate/heal from your own traumas of causing suffering to other human beings.

I think we can agree very well on that people following right-wing ideologies do not enrich any community.
The groups you mention there are of course a problem wherever they are, you don't have to convince me.
e.g in Dortmund, Germany, we had a case of neonazis trying to build alliances with islamists. It's a revolving door:
https://www.tagesschau.de/investigativ/ndr/rechtsextremismus-islamismus-is-salafismus-terrorismus-100.html
Of course, people love having easy black-white narratives of good vs bad. This includes white leftists not seeing the complexity in other countries and cultures and having clear difficulties to identify bigotry.
I just advise for caution because this discussion is a minefield.

I wanted to say
"The Revolution starts in the kitchen"
Wanna do something badass?
Get some people and start a cooking collective.
You can start really small. Bring coffee to people at a picket or a protest.
Organize a food not bombs. Cook for an event at the local social center. Go out, serving meals to people.
Contact local businesses, and farmers for supplies. Get supporters. Get organized.
This makes people feel cared for, gives them power to fight. And it creates a network. Not to forget: is a lot of fun.

We, the faculty, students, and staff of the Universities in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria, send you this message as we leave our classrooms to help defend our universities, our cities, and our revolution alongside the self-defense forces. Before the autonomous administration, Raqqa (Sharq) and Kobanê had no universities. Our campuses, built in the midst of war, have reclaimed long-denied education to young people, grounding learning in women’s liberation, ecology, and a democratic, communal life for the people.
For the past fifteen years in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria, under constant pressure and repeated attacks by imperial, sub-imperial, and colonial powers, our people have built a shared life through collective capacity. Against capitalism and patriarchy, we have worked to advance a society rooted in women’s liberation, ecological life, and democratic self-rule. Under the conditions of war across the region, and against the violence and impositions of regional states and their mercenaries, we relied on our own self-defense and our own diplomacy to carve out space, and within that space, we struggled to build a life that once seemed impossible.
Today, that life is under attack. What we have built, this source of hope for oppressed peoples in the region and around the world, is being targeted from all sides by the fascist forces of the Syrian Arab Army, an al-Qaeda lineage rebranded into state authority and dressed in suits, and by mercenaries, backed by regional and global imperial powers.
We are living through an unfolding feminicide and genocide. The situation on the ground is urgent and worsening by the day. Our university buildings are full of displaced people trying to survive the winter without blankets or extra clothing. Turkish drones have targeted several places near the University of Rojava in Qamishlo during the last few days. Students in the dormitories in Qamishlo are cut off from their families in Kobanê, not knowing if their loved ones are safe, and unable to reach them.
The situation in Kobanê is particularly dire. The city is currently under siege, surrounded by Syrian Army forces on one side and the Turkish army on the other. For seven days, there has been no electricity, no access to water, and no reliable access to basic necessities. Under these conditions, learning, safety, and survival are being targeted as part of a coordinated siege.
We say this clearly to our friends, colleagues, and comrades: we will defend ourselves with everything we have. We will defend our people, our universities, and the possibility of the life we have struggled to build.
We call on you, wherever you are, to stand with Rojava. Raise your voice. Organize on your campuses, in your unions, and in your communities. Use your positions, however limited they may feel, to push for action, to demand accountability, and to refuse silence. Strengthen the networks of solidarity that make resistance possible. Stand up for the revolutionary aims of freedom, women’s liberation, ecological life, and democratic communal life. Your solidarity is part of our self-defense, and it can help shift the balance and prevent yet another genocide in the region.

I would be careful with the "the whole way of life on most of the planet would need to fundamentally change." part.
I think that we need to be much more specific in order not to have people thinking of humans living again in caves and stuff.
The cruel thing is that maybe there wouldn't even be necessary so much change.
Especially not in quality of life.
We need definitely decrease hyperaccelerated consumerism via #degrowth. But consumerism is anyway not a source of real joy. More like a quick and shiny party drug that makes you an addict.
And the ephimeral, inefficient and unstable economies we built on fossil fuels? That's just one of many ways to organize society so that people know when they get up in the morning what they will work today and organizing the stuff they need.
Sure, people will have to mend their stuff again, share their stuff with other people, and swap most of the weird, unconnected bullshit jobs people are doing for meaningful work like artisanship, farming or caring for others. And deciding things in your community is also sometimes exhausting.
But all this is not a "fundamental change". The fundamental change is what is to come (especially when the system continues like this)..

I am looking for resources about climate anxiety and apocalyptic-feelings, in order to give my extended family a workshop to cope better with this reality that we live in.
There are different levels of awareness, some people more conservative (luckily more in the traditional sense, no full-blown fascists) and a range of conditions of general mental health (ranging from "this is fine", over regular therapy to in and out of the clinic). I was asked by some cousins whether to do something "because you warned us already years ago that all these things would happen and we are really scared about the future".
The idea behind is a) that I want to help them not getting crushed under negative feelings and b) if we want to achieve social change, we need people to be able to move from paralysis to action.
Additional info: I am not sure yet how to organize this, if it is better to do a 2-3 hour in person-workshop or more regularly online meetings (we are quite scattered and meet usually only once a year).
Has anyone some links to share?

[Reposting a very cool blog chapter by @nprofile…80kn :ecoanarchism_heart: before it gets lost in the depths of the internet]
"Imposter farmer?"
February 11th, 2025
It feels cliche to say, but ever since I can remember, I've wanted to grow food for people. I've spent the last 20 years growing it for myself and my family, but regardless of how fulfilling my personal gardening endeavors went, there was always an itch to do more. But... call myself a farmer? Oof.
This year is the first year that I have access to a large swath of land to grow food on. In July, I moved onto 80 acres with my friends to mold and shape the land into a community resource: event space, ecological learning, conservation, and yep, growing food.
To say I'm excited about the opportunity would be an understatement, yet whenever the chance arises to call myself a farmer, I pause. And feel a pit in my stomach. And it's not because I think ill of farmers - farmers are rad. I couldn't figure out exactly why, until I took a closer look at some internalized capitalism that was stuck inside me: there isn't much social capital in barely making ends meet growing food. Sometimes there are no days off. Plants can be finnicky and pests, detrimental. Industrialized food is less expensive. Climate change is a real threat to food production. It's hard work and very little external validation. So, why the heck would I want to farm?
To say farming is stigmatized seems a bit hyperbolic, but it's not lauded like high-paying, college-educated careers - the careers I was told I should be working toward. That's to say, if I told people I was going back to school to become an engineer or nurse, I can't imagine I'd be met with the same skepticism and doubt that I have in sharing I want to grow food.
For me, growing food is a radical act. Farms are weavers of community, connection, reciprocity, and liberation - they connect us to the land and to each other with the abundance they provide while directly countering oppressive, exclusionary systems. Farms are magic. I know this because I feel it every time I harvest a vegetable. Every time I see the diversity of life alongside me as I tend to the land - the birds, the bugs, the soil, the water. The work is hard and uncertain, sure. But for me, so is an office job with a toxic culture.
It's becoming easier, saying that I am a farmer. And although I'm only in my first year of "farming", I've been a farmer in my soul for much longer. Navigating the shame around choosing farming has made it clear how important finding like-minded, young, radical farmers is for me. Similarly, so is connecting with seasoned farmers that are eager to teach the newbies all the things we didn't know that we don't know. I feel motivated to make this work - or at least give it my all to say I tried. So, yes. I am a farmer. And I'm absolutely ecstatic to finally say that.

Changing individual behavior without changing the system achieves only about 10% emissions reduction. Governments and companies hold the keys for the remaining 90%, this we need to put pressure on them!
A really good study by the World Resource Institute:

To be clear: this does not mean that you shouldn't stop flying, eat less meat, buy less shit and use renewable electricity.
But it means that our time and energy is much better used in fighting for social change.
And, achieving something in community is joy! :bunny:

I just learned from a Youtube comment that Pat the Bunny is back! 🤸
Searching the web, I found his new project:
https://www.friendsinreallife.com/
I don't even care so much about the music. I am just happy for Pat that he is still there :QueerCat:
" Grow old if you can, half my friends weren’t given the chance!" resumes it quite well.
(Pat had retired some years ago from doing very cool folk-punk, including projects like the amazing "Ramshackle Glory" and "Wingnut Dishwashers Union". I still listen to them a lot. They cover also serious topics like addiction and suicide, but achieving to explain why life is still worth it. Their songs helped many folks survive the horrible conditions in the US, and it was nice for people in other places, too. Just read the comments under the youtube videos and you'll understand what I mean).

Can somebody from Canada explain a moment what they think about the new prime minister?
Just wanting to ask real humans, since we live in interesting times and most media are garbage...

The students (and farmers, and workers and *everybody*) are *still* protesting in Serbia against the right-wing government!
This is huge!
(Be aware that the media aren't talking about it. 🤐)
You think that Serbia doesn't matter because it's a small country?
Almost 7 million inhabitants is *something*. And they giving us all an example how to deal with right-wing presidents.

dear @nprofile…2754 , you post frequently nice memes and stuff. But could you *please* improve your ALT-texts?
I mean, yes, life is hard and we all have a lot to do. But memes often make no sense without further context. Like in this case that it is a Sioux (?) leader that says the second part...

We investigated the topic of pathogen survival on surfaces during the pandemic.
As a general rule, most human pathogens don't survive longer times (over a week) on surfaces. We did this for a while to our packed grocieries in the times of large anxiety when everything from the supermarket was considered potentially mortal.
Thus, you can "wait-sterilize", putting the purifier into quarantine for a while. Warm temperatures and humidity decrease the survival rate of most bacteria.
Specifically, Mycobacterium tuberculosis is also very sensitive to sunlight, so giving your purifier a sunbath might also be helpful. (I am not sure whether you are concerned specifically about tuberculosis or if you took it as an example)
Here are some numbers,
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7916105/
but you need to take into account that "survival rate" also means that a scientists detected some DNA on a surface, which does not mean necessarily that somebody could get infected by touching the object.

Dear scientists, especially the R-community:
The NZ government wants to scrap all soc social sciences and humanities. 🤯
I probably don't have to explain why this is a totally bonkers milei-ish idea. (maybe just add the detail that Māori researchers will be overproportionally affected by these budget cuts, but this is probably anyway a feature of the plan)
I address the #RStats community explicitely, since R was developed in Aotearoa. And here in the Fediverse we are *many* R nerds!
So, @nprofile…tm70 or other kiwis, is there something the international academic community could do to express our thoughts and support your struggle?

Today is #WorldSoilDay !
What a good moment to think about this amazing ecosystem under our feet, the support for the roots of our food and thus our existence, the home of multibillions of organisms that work day and night to recycle nutrients, break down pollutants and make our planet a thriving habitat.
Don't ask what the soil can do for you, ask what you can do for the soil! 😊

SOLNIT, REBECCA
https://traficantes.net/libros/un-para%C3%ADso-en-el-infierno

How You Can Help
As a World Community Grid volunteer, you download a secure software program to your computer. And when your computer is idle or not using its full computing power, it will run a simulated experiment in the background. Then, your computer contacts the World Community Grid server to let it know that it has completed the simulation, which is then uploaded to our server. All of this happens unobtrusively, while you are going about your regular activities such as typing an email, browsing the internet, or while your computer is idle but left on.
World Community Grid receives the results you send back (often called work units or research tasks), combines them with hundreds of thousands of results from other volunteers all over the world, and sends them to the Delft research team. The researchers then begin the difficult work of analyzing the data. While this process can take years, it accelerates that would otherwise take decades, or might even be impossible.
"This is the first time we'll be able to map most of Africa for a whole rainy season, which has never been done before at this level of resolution," says Professor Nick van de Giesen, principal investigator for the Africa Rainfall Project.
Join World Community Grid today so you and your computer can help accelerate this vitally important research.
