When I said AI could come in handy for busy parents, I was thinking of remembering to sign kids up for sports, keeping track of multitudinous emails from schools etc. This just very, very sad:

Likewise, I wasn't suggesting my list will definitely be seen as mistakes, just they are bets Cooks has placed based on strategy, not taste, that could turn out to be wrong down the line, if say Google ended the AI deal later when it's more critical or if a new administration came into power and took revenge on Trump toadies

Social media is not only a daily feature in the lives of teens, some report using these platforms “almost constantly.” About one-in-five teens say this of TikTok and YouTube.
Fewer describe their use of Instagram and Snapchat as almost constant (12% for each). And just 3% say this of Facebook.
Across these five platforms, 36% of teens use at least one of these sites almost constantly.

“The decision not to show the blast has haunted viewers since the film’s release. It’s a radical act of cinematic restraint in an era saturated in spectacle—a refusal that feels louder than any detonation. In that silence, A House of Dynamite confronts the same question that has shadowed nuclear culture for decades: What does it mean to imagine the unimaginable?” https://thebulletin.org/2025/11/a-radical-act-of-cinematic-restraint-how-to-understand-the-ending-of-a-house-of-dynamite/

Brilliant bit from @nprofile…n6ma writer @nprofile…2kda on the controversy over the encrypted message on the sculpture outside the CIA:
To date, the machinations of solving Kryptos—or even figuring out if it could be solved—have been on a high level, a complex web of shadows that John le Carré might have spun. The anticlimactic discovery of the plaintext, due to Sanborn’s slip, has shifted the narrative to the tragicomic purgatory of Mick Herron’s Slough House series.

Although "all at once" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Cal Newport on Sora 2:
"To me, these are the acts of a company that poured tens of billions of investment dollars into creating what they hoped would be the most consequential invention in modern history, only to finally realize that what they wrought, although very cool and powerful, isn’t powerful enough on its own to deliver a new world all at once." https://calnewport.com/is-sora-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-openai/

In 2015, the FBI recovered an iPhone from one of the San Bernardino shooters. They demanded that Apple create a version of iOS with a backdoor to allow access. Apple refused and even went to court to defend its position (though the case became moot). Does anyone think Tim Cook’s Apple in 2025 would resist, or be able to resist?

Bloomberg is experimenting with AI written summaries at the top of stories. Big problem today for a story that's moving the entire stock market:
(An AI summary previously at the top of the story was removed because it misstated when the broader tariff action was to take place.)

“the other likely path we can see is AI being used by authoritarian governments to control their population through mass surveillance and loss of autonomy…In particular, it does seem like the balance of power between capital and labor could easily get messed up,”

A little bit scary implication here from Sam Altman:
“The world will not change all at once; it never does. Life will go on mostly the same in the short run, and people in 2025 will mostly spend their time in the same way they did in 2024. We will still fall in love, create families, get in fights online, hike in nature, etc. But the future will be coming at us in a way that is impossible to ignore, and the long-term changes to our society and economy will be huge.”
