Ash-Miw-Re

Very Gen-X, very Neurodivergent, mostly Kemetic eclectic pagan from the Great Basin Desert. I have a couple of herding breed dogs who keep me semi-sane and I do a lot of arts and crafts and native plant gardening. I also offer cleromancy and Lenormand readings through my Ko-Fi!

@nprofile…nmr0 From a quick glance at Wikipedia, I'm going to guess a similar experience to what I had with Albert Payson Terhune, where a loved childhood story reviewed in adulthood actually turns out to be espousing some incredibly horrible ideals with such heavy-handedness you wonder how even a 5-year-old didn't notice?

@nprofile…nmr0 This is what people forget when they go the respectability politics route. The goalposts will just keep moving indefinitely.

@nprofile…exex I wish we had a true local folk magic tradition where I am, but without taking from Native Americans who are understandably wary and frankly traumatized, this place is otherwise too new to human settlement to really have much. I do think it may partly explain why I feel better connected to Kemetic Paganism than what my biological ancestors would have practiced---I, too, live in a desert with a regular flood cycle. But some things still need to be adapted for what I have.
I always get a little stuck when it comes to spells calling for something to be buried at a crossroads. There's not an unpaved crossroads within a hundred miles of me, closest I could get would be hucking it off the I-80 interchange and hope it doesn't hit anyone. So I have to consider what the intent of using a crossroads is for that particular spell. Someplace busy with spirits? I know a few. Somewhere to dispose of baneful ingredients where the energy goes far away? Walmart dumpster, most likely. If I have to, there's a (singular) river within reach, but that requires consideration of what environmental impacts might be.

@nprofile…exex Just realized how much local climate may affect magical practices. Where I live, waiting for a rag in a tree to rot away would take a couple of years at bare minimum, not a very encouraging way to rid yourself of a curse. But having seen how much mildew attacks everything in the South, it makes more sense there.

@nprofile…ayk9 Hm. I always thought it seemed very intuitively natural that the two would combine---life as a stable condition conveying the idea of immortality in a recursively reinforcing way. Certainly stability was a trait highly valued in Egyptian culture, which is understandable for people living in the (superficially paradoxical, but I believe actually geographically typical, from my experience of the American Southwest) combination of a desert which is also a flood plain. But perhaps that's why I'm a Kemetic Pagan.

@nprofile…ayk9 A djed is an Ancient Egyptian symbol, often said to represent the spine of Osiris( it looks to me a bit like a blunted version of the Space Needle, though that is presumably a coincidence), which symbolizes stability and endurance. It's often used in combination with the ankh( by overlaying the two) as an amulet.

@nprofile…ayk9 And here's Egyptology nerd me, almost popping up to answer "What is a djed", before realizing that wasn't useful in context at all.
