So... Tesla (most likely working with SpaceX) used a 30 year old special effects stunt of launching cars in the air with compresswd gas, paired with a 50 year old RCS technology used in all rockets to this day to do a PR stunt on a purpose-built, one-off test platform worth milions, dressed up to look like a car...
And this is somehow impressive?
Woah, it's almost as impressive as sailing boats utilizing wind to propell themselves!

Interesting discovery regarding #solus :
The boot times are flying. I have tested some distros on my laptop and while stuff like #firmware, #kernel and #userspace were pretty close, the #loader and #initrd were just off the charts:
Solus:
- loader 3 s
- initrd 6 s
Fedora:
- loader 8 s
- initrd 12 s
Aurora:
- loader 9 s
- initrd 25 s (!)
Debian:
- loader 8 s
- initrd 14 s
Arch (systemd-boot):
- loader 6 s
- initrd 11 s
What sorcery is this, @nprofile…uwje ?

@nprofile…l54j hi there! Are there any plans to fix "Recent activity" on starting page? It stopped working with the release of 6.7, and it's a really nice addition, that should be there. Or if it's removed intentionally, the toggle to enable it should be deleted from the settings.

@nprofile…uwje hey guys! Just wanted to ask - wouldn't it be possible to ship a 7.1.8 kernel update outside of the sync, to resolve the issue of all current AMD GPUs (both 90xx and 7xxx series) being unusable on 7.1.7, due to graphical glitches and artifacts?

In 6.6.3 instead of semi-transparent grey, this preview is bright, opaque white. Like white white, #FFFFFF. As a result if you want to maximize the window by dragging it to the top edge, you get instant fullscreen flash of white

@nprofile…dj2e got it! Well, that's why I want to try Void. "Stable rolling" is kind of appealing (that's why I'm on Solus currently).

@nprofile…dj2e oh, nice to know that!
Out of curiosity - why the long wait? Were there some problems in regards to systemd reliance, or it normally takes a bit longer to update DEs in Void.
Asking, because I have never seriously used Void for longer, so no idea how the pase of updates looks like.

A small upgrade to my PC - my radiator fans had shot bearings, so I replaced all the fans with Noctua NF-P12 Redux. And oh my god, what an upgrade it was! Now instead of a Boeing spooling its engines when I try to do anything more than browse the web, the PC is whisper quiet, even under full load.
And also I undervolted my CPU, so now my idle temp is around 48*C, instead of previous 62*C, with virtually no hit to performance.
Crazy stuff!
And yes, I know it's dusty, I cleaned it afterwards

@nprofile…6q5p for whatever fucking reason, there is a group of people, that claim that LTS distros (including Mint) are destroying the Linux and FOSS reputation, and keep recommending Arch and derivatives.
I lied, I know the reason. It's because GNOME extremists are screaming, that you should always use the most recent upstream versions, and not even dare to bother the app creators with bug reports, unless ou use the latest version of their app (eg. Hari with GNOME Calendar)

@nprofile…a4rc not sure if helpful - in GrapheneOS if you back up the APK of app installed from Play Store, after restoring it's in a weird limbo. It's installed, but the Play Store shows it's not, it doesn't update, and sometimes crash, or open Play Store to download this app.
And all the data is gone. APK is just installation file, the configs and app data are stored separately.

@nprofile…z6pq I get what you're saying. I think what the conversation is about is important. If we're talking stuff that an American (or Pole, or Greek, or anyone) could really not understand, due to cultural differences - I don't think it's insulting at all. But if you're talking with a colleague from work from Germany, about your work, then yeah that would be super insulting

2026-06-29 17:18:19 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…z6pq English is not my native language, so I never thought about this as insulting. I mean, we're half the world away, it's only natural, that you don't really understand or grasp some concepts, that are normal here, same as I don't fully catch all the stuff that's common knowledge in the US. So sometimes, it needs explaining "to make it easier to understand". But this I think is mostly language thing, and how English is different than for example Polish

2026-06-29 17:15:04 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…z6pq for example, some time ago I was explaining to some Americans how is it possible, that in Poland Nintendo was practically non-existent up until Switch released, Halo is not "the game", and when in the US Doom shareware was shared over the network when it was released, meanwhile in Poland we were buying it on flea market from shady Russians. Because "what do you mean Internet only started becoming a thing in Poland in 2004-2005", and "our most popular console in 2000 was a NES clone"

2026-06-29 17:10:25 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…z6pq to be fair, sometimes when I talk to Americans they (not intentionally) get trapped in "US is the center of the world" mindset, and anything gets compared to US, even if it's unwarranted. Again - more often than not it's not intentional, but it means often you have to start from the absolute basics, that will sort of put them in the shoes of person outside the US.

@nprofile…p2u7 @nprofile…ynd9 here you have a Polish youtuber that has a whole series of reading old 90s gaming newspapers from Poland. Amazing window to the past:
www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZ0h0Yns_-Xh8NC7RqyEdTbWCH-OdbDJp
Some of them have manual English subtitles, some you have to use the automatic translation. I can really recommend.
Also another example of Russian-Polish localisation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OHorx0CFuc&list=PLZ0h0Yns_-XjfTsf7VGax12mGBUU7gO0V

2026-06-10 08:58:41 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…p2u7 @nprofile…ynd9 Yeah, Poland didn't have anti-piracy laws up until I think 2005? Or something like that, so it was a wild west of pirated games, cracks, unofficial ports etc.
One more example - hard drives were super expensive here, so you couldn't really install the game - it had to be running directly from CD. Crackers would replace all cinematics in the game with 1 second 10x10 px video to save space, so the game would be already installed on the CD. Often with cheated saves included

2026-06-10 08:54:24 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…p2u7 @nprofile…ynd9 Oh yes! And you must ask them for unofficial Polish localizations in early 90s. Where crackers (mostly Russians) would rip out original voice lines from the game and re-record them in kinda-sorta-polish-russian, oftern in terrible quality, with heavy accent. Here you have a great example - Max Payne:

@nprofile…p2u7 @nprofile…ynd9 probably. Although I'm not exactly "that" generation - I was born in late 90s, so I experienced a tail end of this whole ordeal. But for example, when in early 2000s German teens were playing Nintendo games and getting PS for Christmas, I was going with my dad to flea market every weekend to buy a pirated CD of some new PC game from some shady Russian game. We even had "unofficial ports", where the CD (or later DVD) would include pirated PlayStation game and the emulator!

2026-06-10 08:42:31 UTC

@nprofile…p2u7 @nprofile…ynd9 yeah, exactly! I even have a full crate of cassettes my mother recorded from the radio. Some of them even have the radio speaker tuning in to say something, like "Hey, as promised, we're playing Iron Maiden, hope you like it!"

@nprofile…ynd9 Just out of sheer curiosity - where you're from Nintendo was a big deal?
In Poland we literally never had Nintendo. Only in the 90s we had a Polish licensed NES clone called Pegasus, but it was a luxury item not many could afford. Apart from that, Nintendo never had any presence here. Before Switch was released I really saw a Nintendo console in person like once - in highschool when my friend's father brought him DS from his US work trip. Poland was always a PC land

@nprofile…l0vd @nprofile…eew3 I'm far from hating AI as a concept. I can see several good uses for it. The issue is in how it's implemented currently. Yes, gigantic general purpose LLMs that consume equivalent of a small country in electricity to answer a single question is turbo cancer. Small, local, isolated, specialized models are not

@nprofile…eew3 I mean their approach is... reasonable. I don't support Linux Desktop being agentic OS, but a small, isolated, local AI model is a way better approach than a gigantic, remote model run on huge-ass datacenter, that has root access to your system.

2026-06-09 08:20:47 UTC

A bit tired of clunkyness of Ollama+AnythingLLM, I decided to try something new.
#LocalAI is a great piece of software. All-in-one solution for downloading models, backends, WebUI for interacting with the AI, and all of that running in Docker with GPU acceleration.
I even used "Configurable Button" Plasmoid to have an on/off switch on my panel, so I'm one click away from starting a local AI model.
And the performance! 95 tok/s on RX7900XTX

@nprofile…c4t6 the issue with GNOME is - for most people at least - the push of GNOME team for the desktop to be exactly UND EXACTLY how they invision it. All the possible customizations and options, that are exposed to the user in other desktops, require either messing with dconf, modifying system files, or creating dedicated shell extensions. And all of this is typically erased or broken by the next major update.
Not to mention the drama and fight against LTS distros...

I hate AI for one particular reason:
You browse the web, you stumble upon a nice-looking FOSS project, something that would be actually very useful. You open the Github page, read the README, looks nice.
Then you look at the commits and contributors. Top contributor - Cursor Agent or Claude. You look into the code - entirely vibe coded with massive security and performance oversights.

Now I know why my idle CPU temps were pinned at 80 Celsius...

@nprofile…mr5c yeah, I meant the Software Center, or whatever they call it now. It's absolutely awful, the worst software management software there is...
For Flatpak I really recommend https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.kolunmi.Bazaar
It's a project from the Bazzite developers and it's MILES better at its job than GNOME Software. It's Flatpak only

- reply

@nprofile…mr5c well, the solution is simple - just remove GNOME Software and update with dnf update. By default dnf does online (in-place) updates, so no need to reboot. Problem solved. And if you want a good software store for Flatpak, Bazaar is great

2026-05-15 07:44:14 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…mr5c if GNOME Software automatically downloaded and staged some update in the background (which it likes to do, even if automatic updates are off), it won't show either in GS updates page or in dnf update - since it's already downloaded and staged for installation.
On the battery draining - do you see the giant checkbox, saying it will reboot and install updates? You are informed about it, so if you chuck it in the bag, it's your fault. Just type in the FDE password. Or uncheck the box

@nprofile…mr5c this update system is the smartest one in Linux. You don't want to replace binaries in-place while the system is running. You want to shut down, replace all the files that are updated, and power on
The issue you're describing is not with Fedora, but with GNOME Software, which is and always has been absolutely awful, not showing half of the updates, or updating only some packages, while skipping some, sometimes installing updates unprompted. Just remove GNOME Software and use terminal

There is this cool project, SyncIn - it has been accused of being vibecoded, based off code comments and emojis in README. I spoke to the dev - it is not. But it "kinda-sorta-maybe-looks-like" vibecoded, so people are quick to jump on the hatewagon...

Where should I file a suggestion for change in KDE Discover?
Based on talks with new Linux users, many of them are confused when they open "Software Center" and are met with multiple "sources" for a single application - from repos, Flatpak, Snap.
I think Discover should include a small ? icon next to the source selector, explaining what specific format is, what are the pros and cons (eg. "This is repo package, it may be outdated if you're using an LTS release").

@nprofile…rejf I recommend upgrading through terminal. For some reason Discover uses dnf4 to upgrade (whereas in terminal dnf is alias for dnf5), so afterwards all the packages are marked as "user installed rpm" from unknown source. In theory this doesn't affect anything, but there are reports of dependency links being lost...

@nprofile…ju4e call me crazy, but I think this is WAY better approach, than what Canonical is doing with Ubuntu. Forcing AI onto the normal, day-to-day users, in form of Snap, universally the most hated packaging format... Whereas Fedora utilizes their huge ecosystem and established immutable images to just create an AI-first edition for folks who want it, and leave the core product free of all of this.

2026-05-11 12:36:28 UTC

I just learned that Fedora plans to create a whole separate edition called Fedora AI Desktop. It's going to be an immutable edition, that comes packed full of tools and libraries essential for working with both local and remote AI.
And to be honest... It's the most mature and non-controversial way to "tickle" the AI-crazed enterprise space, without compromising their core product.
If it works out Fedora will have one more edition. If not, they shut it down, no biggie. But the core is safe!

@nprofile…h0km yeah for me the biggest blocker with Fedora is lack of h.264 and h.265 in Mesa, which are essential for VR. I know there's Mesa Freeworld, but out of principle, I don't use unofficial repos for super important stuff like GPU drivers, kernel and DE

@nprofile…h0km well, me too when I was starting my Linux journey. I wanted new and shiny, that's why I rocked Arch for almost 2 years, then Fedora for 3 years.
Now 10 years in, this desire for newest versions and all new and shiny has worn off, got burned by many unexpected breakages, because someone shipped untested/broken version.
Now I just want my PC to work. Nothing less, nothing more. When I power it on in the morning, I expect it to work flawlessly until I shut it down.

@nprofile…h0km Kubuntu is (as far as I know) the only distro providing close-to-LTS level of stability with releases every half a year with package version freeze in between releases. It's a perfect middle ground between real LTS with releases every 2 years, and something like Fedora or Arch, where new versions are being shipped as soon as they are released

2026-05-06 18:55:51 UTC

@nprofile…h0km Stability. I don't want a system that's being updated every hour with every new version of every package. I want a system that I install, configure, and am 100% done with it for the next couple of months. Minor security fixes, that are applied automatically and Flatpak updates, nothing more. If nothing changes, nothing breaks.
That's why I'm currently rocking Debian. Ultimate stability

Why the hell would I take a laptop with me? I have basically a laptop with a gamepad attached to it. It's 100% enough for what I will need on vacation!
THIS is the power of Steam Deck. Not its gaming performance, not the price. The fact, that with a pretty decent handheld console, you get a Linux laptop free!

Steam Controller launches on May 4th at a price of 99 Euro, 419 PLN in Poland.
I'd say - fair price. Lands exactly between first-party Xbox and PS5 controllers (250-300 PLN) and the Pro ones (600 PLN for Xbox Elite, 900 PLN for PS5 DualSense Edge). It offers WAY MORE than any of these controllers, with touchpads, gyro, capacitive Hall Effect joysticks, and the most important:
Openness and repairability - you can tweak its settings to your liking, and fix it with official iFixit spare parts!

Well, it's time for you to think for like 5 seconds about your argument. They're not plugging ChatGPT into an ICBM.
It's supposed to be a system, that takes an amount of data that's incomprehenisible by a human, process it through custom analytics model and spit out facts - is that a valid military target or not. Without bias, without reasoning. Analytics and facts.
Machine learning has been used for DECADES for data analysis. IT's one thing it's good at

Fix is easy, but must be done BEFORE installation - in `/etc/calamares/modules/partition.conf` under `kubuntu_boot` partition set `onlyPresentWithEncryption: false` and above it `drawNestedPartitions: false` (otherwise Calamares segfaults when selecting BTRFS layout).
While at it I also changed root label from `kubuntu_2510` to more universal `kubuntu_root`
I have to find where I can create some issue or PR to change this option, since it will make Kubuntu unbootable from 26.10 on

2026-04-17 10:29:04 UTC

Ubuntu will stop supporting BTRFS for /boot partition in 26.10
Meanwhile Kubuntu by default when you select btrfs partitioning doesn't even create a separate /boot partition, just keeps it on BTRFS root
So... my installation will break in 26.10? Nice one...
