I see we’ve reached the part of the electoral cycle where a Tory opposition smashes the emergency ‘cut red tape!’ policy box.
Still think the word ‘regulation’ needs replacing with ‘responsibilities’ because then these discussions can be framed around which group is going to end up with diminished rights: workers; parents; women; consumers.

@npub1thg…zq23 @npub13cg…ck4q is PWR moving to being fortnightly or publishing at weekends? My feed is looking odd in that it missed a week, then had a weekend episode. Is that the same this week, or is it an off week?

2026-09-10 06:31:20 UTC

I don’t want creepy smart glasses, or a folding phone. It feels like the hardware scene is getting desperate. It’s reached the 3D TV era of development.

@npub1jaq…x03k morning! What is it you need specifically I can help with? Are you considering setting one up?

i haven’t worked in one, but i do work with Co-ops UK (the apex membership and trade body that represents the movement) and might be able to find someone who could at least point you in the right direction.

I think my issue is when/if I bump into someone wearing them in public. Shouldn’t others get the choice as to whether their image is forwarded to Zuck?

@npub13cg…ck4q ref: ofcom requiring local journalism for analogue licensing: why do they not require same of digital broadcasters? In general, I’d have thought they’d be in a stronger financial position to do so

it was a genius idea to bring in football fans when (a) the lack of broadcasting rights didn’t stop them and (b) Sky Sports was very expensive (even back then)

fantastic story! I was a big fan of the original station, back when (I think) Chris Evans did his original run there. I think that’s where he created Rock and Roll Football (even though I hate football) which interrupted music with each goal in major matches. I didn’t enjoy the interruptions, but it was a fantastic station.

@npub13cg…ck4q Enjoyed reading your radioland post this week. One thing that caught my attention was the reminder that Virgin Radio was replaced by Absolute Radio which I’d either forgotten or had been confused by the fact we now have Virgin Radio once again. How did that happen? Is it the same company? Did they buy the rights to the name back from Absolute?

don’t you live in one of the sunniest/hottest spots on the planet?!?!?? Do you have climate deniers in charge of local/state government or something? It’s like that phrase about leaving money on the table, except it’s sunshine on the roof

could the funding tag not include an option to allow affiliate links that the podcaster either agrees to switch on or off? Podcaster would be made aware that some player apps may only add your funding button if you’ve agreed to pay a small affiliate fee back to them.

your comment implies the hosting companies want to stop this. But Spreaker are making money from it. Why would they want to stop it? Why wouldn’t other hosting companies want to encourage the next Inception Point to set up with them instead?

2026-01-15 14:03:19 UTC

- reply

James provided a fascinating analysis showing how, even with free tier, Spreaker are actually making profit with the thousands of slop podcasts made by Inception Point. If that’s the case, there’s no incentive for hosting companies to solve this problem unless others in the industry force their hand.

2025-12-23 11:56:23 UTC

- reply

true, although I was struck by how concerned @npub1rcn…dw4h was in his contribution. I just don’t understand how either (a) a company like Spreaker can justify the cost of providing free hosting for that many shows or (b) how Inception Point AI can be generating enough revenue to pay them for it.
It isn’t sustainable long-term surely?

2025-12-23 08:29:53 UTC

- reply

@podcastindex.social maybe needs to be directory-led? PI (or another) could refuse to index all shows from a particular host and punish those who are enabling this stuff. Player-apps would (I’m sure) be happy to choose a directory that was AI free as a distinguishing feature.

2025-12-22 15:59:04 UTC

- reply

ultimately all the listeners (and the player apps they use) will apply pressure on those directories and hosts to adopt this strategy to prevent their search results from being overwhelmed with slop.
Co-ordinating and delivering this strategy should become the new primary mission for the PSP in order to save the industry. Because surely the industry ‘standard’ (which is what they’re all about defining) should be about human creators.

2025-12-22 15:54:43 UTC

@npub1thg…zq23 @npub13cg…ck4q loved the 2026 predictions show. Mine is that the sheer volume of AI Slop will provide the PSP with a new lease of life and spur them to co-ordinate an anti-slop strategy, given all parties hate it.
This strategy should involve convincing all good hosting companies to remove any remaining free hosting plans. PSP then convinces all good directories to stop pulling from hosts that continue to offer free hosting. This will kill AI Slop Inc.

FFS Gary Lineker. You’re already ok for a few quid and, whilst I do appreciate you fighting the good fight against arseholes on Twitter, do you really need the extra cash from an 8 minutes - EIGHT MINUTES - segment of midroll ads? @npub13cg…ck4q@bne.social is this is a new industry record?

@npub1thg…zq23 @npub13cg…ck4q have you seen that odd PR put out by LibSyn that Rob Walch read out on his Podcast 411? Why would they kill The Feed? Why would a podcast hosting company choose not to have an official podcast? Everything about that feels wierd.

making a living (or part of) through keynotes and attending conferences has a huge amount of mystery around it (to me at least) I’m left wondering how on earth someone would start, or how to pitch your prices vs other speakers. Unlikely other performance arts, there isn’t a drama or ballet school equivalent to help train you. I don’t think there’s a union or a guild either. It’s almost Stonemason-like to me.

I’m so grateful for everyone’s suggestions on this. It’s remarkable that the recommendations are all so varied. I definitely don’t want colour e-ink (good point @npub13cg…ck4q) but I also dislike android/Google play. I’m leaning towards DRM free / ePUB on eBooks for purchasing and a used e-ink eReader of some sort. It’s a real pity Bookshop app (a brilliant way to get money to indie bookshop owners) are all DRM locked.

Looking for advice for Amazon kindle alternatives. Nook seems to be highly recommended, but Rakuten is still another mega-corp even if they aren’t quite as gargantuan as Amazon. How/where do you all buy your ebooks and how/which device do you use to read them?

@npub13cg…ck4q have you had any technical issues reported with today’s podcast episode? Not sure if it’s Pocket Casts or iOS26 perhaps? But it’s in a perpetual download swirling circle thing.

I think some sort of formalised accreditation is the only way PSP will increase adoption of all the standards they’re currently promoting, and the only way of creating a uniform minimum baseline of features that the entire industry should be delivering.

2025-06-04 07:59:59 UTC

I guess my question is: what would your thoughts be on the industry creating a new ISO standard based on direction and input from the PSP?

2025-06-04 07:57:19 UTC

- reply

would these issues be helped if the PSP pushed for all their standards to become a formal ISO Standard (eg ISO:xx001). There would be additional costs involved in order for apps and hosts to gain the accreditation but it would also have greater likelihood of industry wide adoption. It would also slow things down enough to allow businesses like Blubrry to not be overwhelmed by constant new additions to the standard (generally ISO standards update only every few years)

that was essential breakfast viewing during my early teens. I can't think of any other daily live TV broadcast with that much energy and fantastically watchable chaos. It's tragic that you couldn't do that kind of show today, and yet BBC and ITV breakfast offering (news and interviews from a sofa) really havent changed from the same period.

change just the language? Or change the actual currency you’re using to boost? Because it’s crazy to spend $30 on pizza and then in 5 years time you look back and realise that pizza cost you $10,000. Boosting/streaming sats to podcasters is nuts, in the same way that you shouldn’t buy coffee or pizza with it.

ah I had taken away the wrong information from that interview (my fault for having it in background whilst multi-tasking) as I thought this was in relation to all podcast listening apps. Sorry for misunderstanding!

imagine how much more under pressure Apple/Spotify would feel if there were a handful of breakout indie apps. That probably won’t happen unless the smaller ones drop out.

2024-09-06 13:35:01 UTC

@npub1thg…zq23 @npub13cg…ck4q really interesting interview about the fund from PodToo and whilst we do need to support developers of listening apps I’m also left wondering whether we actually need quite so many? When Russell said “the more apps that are out there the better” I thought “really, why?” What we really need is just a few to stand out and challenge the big two. But having dozens (hundreds?) dilutes that effort

did they just....build a terminal around the old houses? Don’t tell our UK government, or they’ll be getting ideas about how to finally expand Heathrow.

I would Iove to see one of our political leaders, maybe the Home Secretary, head down onto the beaches on the south coast with some blankets and specially designed welcome packs showing new arrivals how to settle and make themselves a new home in the UK.
Lead from the front and show these fascist mobs what we're really about.
