I listened to some Ultravox (they were one of my favorites as a kid), so I decided to read what happened to Midge Ure, and I'm very happy to report that "midge ure allegations" doesn't seem to result in a slew of horrors.
Then I read a bit of an interview in which he sounds like a nice fellow, and now I'll stop before I ruin this wonderful moment in which my childhood hero is still one.

Smart people giving their work away for free to motherfuckers like altman and amodei and musk and jfc i hate this timeline.

I have an Olympia P22 thermal printer, which is *perfect* for my extremely limited needs, except it requires using an app to print the labels.
Does anybody have an idea of how I could control it via PC (ideally a simple linux driver) so I can use it to print labels straight from my own (Django-based) app?

C'è qualcuno qui che ha un contatto a cui possa mandare la mia RMN (di due anni fa) per capire se si può fare, idealmente a #Milano o dintorni?

@nprofile…a4ar I beg to differ.
All the *horrible* things you mentioned are indeed horrible, but happened to a certain number of humans, leaving the rest untouched and eventually ending.
GenAI happened *to humanity*. Pretty much all humans alive today and in the future are going to pay the price of Sam Altman's greed - both intellectually, socially and cilmatically.
So yeah, horrible things happening to humans exist, but ChatGPT happened to *all* humans.

Cara congrega, caro Mastodon:
Grazie mille <3

If I could go back in time, I'd leave baby Hitler alone, poor child. I'd rather make sure that Adolfchen does not go on to become Hitler.
Should I fail, I'd make sure he does not get to collect a bunch of other pariahs and psychos but rather goes on to become just another guy with racist ideas.

The EU should finance two projects:
1. A booking platform for hotels etc

Both are close enough to a public service that they don't really need to make money, and both are excellent steps towards those European hyperscalers that everybody except Trump wants

I have an espresso machine (bought 15 years ago); it's not a great one but it does the job. Getting the right grind from supermarket coffee is not easy (not even buying the same brand every time), so I was trying to see if I could get a decent, reliable grinder.
Now I really wish there was a middle ground between "I drink whatever comes out of it" and "A grinder under €2000 is a travesty and won't let you recognize that time when the person who roasted the beans had a bit of a headache"

2025-05-09 03:46:30 UTC

«Half the task you complete will be considered "Trifles you should not have concerned yourself with", and some of the ones you haven't done will be "This directly affects the geopolitcal balance of Europe, you should have done it sooner",
and you'll have no way of knowing which is which beforehand,»
I had a restless night.

When I say that the "ship has sailed" I don't mean you shouldn't disagree with the abuse of the term, of course; just that it's so common that I don't find it likely to revert any time soon and, unfortunately, the way language works means that it's likelier that when you say "Nazi", your interlocutor will understand "stupid right wing asshole" rather than "actual Nazi".

I think COVID was the inflection point.
The forces were already at play, of course, but the very first few weeks of the pandemic are what convinced the Kochs and Putins and Thiels and assorted scum that it was time to step up the game.
Because - and this is something that we don't remember often enough - in those first few weeks most people *came together* to fight the enemy.
We showed we could do it, and that's when they knew they had to break us sooner rather than later.

I'm looking at migrating a #Django 1.9 installation to a 5.1 (ideally, TBC) and everything's going swimmingly (for a given value of) except Django CMS which is giving me a rather unexpected error:
'CMSConfig' object has no attribute 'cms_extension'
In other words, it expects the CMS AppConfig instance to possess an attribute that is never explicitly set anywhere.
Sooner or later I'll figure it out but if somebody knows what's going on (eg. sm1 from Divio) that'd be *AWESOME*.
(please boost!)

You know I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to self-promotion, right?
Well, here's the "trailer" for my game (which you can find here: https://pgcd.itch.io/wordrush)
#game #puzzle #wordrush
(I should redo the trailer so it becomes "BOOOM" - fade to black - "BOOOOOM" - melancholy cover of pop song - "BOOM" - epic voice saying "When all seems lost" - BOOM - "finding the right words can save you" - ethereal uplifting change in the pop song - fade - fin)

@nprofile…q6n9 assolutamente corretto. Io ho dovuto negoziare il mio amore per il ciclo dei Mythos di Lovecraft con il fatto che HPL era *almeno* razzista quanto il resto dei suoi coevi, e c'è voluto qualche tempo.

Thanks to several very bad choices by a few people, my dad is going to be relieved of his leg from above the knee.
This will happen in two days, and I have no fucking idea how to support him.
If anybody's gone through something like that and wants to point me towards resources, I'd be very grateful.

A living wage, maybe satisfaction and recognition are important parts of finding a job, sure.
But not having to look at linkedin is what REALLY drives me.
Please hire me. I'm good.

I'm embarassed to ask this but: my wife received a job offer for 750€/m, and we haven't been able to figure out if it means we'll actually have a *lower* household net income (assuming I ever find a job again, which is not looking likely at the moment).
Are there any kind of "public tax advisor" in #berlin that could help us figure it out for free (or a nominal fee, rather than the hundreds a regular Steuerberater would charge)?

In an ABSOLUTELY SURPRISING COINCIDENCE, this morning I was notified by Bandcamp that it's #BandcampFriday just as I was about to finish the second track of Sorry.
As it turns out, I decided it was finished, because today, my "I'll release this in a few days to better mess with my chances of making any money with my music" neuron lost against the "witness me" one.
I'm embarassed to say the angsty teen lyrics have been written by a 50+ person, but I'm really angry.

A study finds that #chatgpt is wrong half the time, and the user doesn't realize it almost half the time.
So, every time somebody writes code with it, there's a 20% chance they'll commit wrong stuff.
And yet, there's still people saying "nah i would know".
We are so, so screwed, and it's all Sam Altman's fault*.

@nprofile…dnwe Every year or so I'm reminded of a friend working as a doctor, who told me he once received a patient and her husband who both lamented infertility and extreme pain during sex, while the woman also lamented urinary incontinence.
The visit showed that the husband penetrated her in the urethra, rather than the vagina.
I can't even start to imagine HOW that happened the first time, nor the absolute, inconceivable pain.
That was Italy in the '90s, btw. Talk about sex ed failures.

I don't think she's fully aware of the implications.

I'm starting to build my Million Dollar Startup* and I'm torn between
A) let's use the stuff I know how to use so I'll write business code sooner
and
B) I should start from zero and use the latest best practices everywhere so it'll be shiny and I'll learn something new
And by "torn" I mean I'll do A) while wistfully thinking about B), or viceversa. That's why I need somebody working with me or a rubber duck.

@npub16u7…uend not exactly: I'm more thinking about how the whole LLM fanfare is _forced_ onto the public, and nobody who consumes something produced by LLMs prefers it to the alternative.
And yet, it doesn't seem like this is covered all that frequently in media (at least not in my bubble), while it's always framed as "we're doing this for the customer" - which is patently false, as far as I can tell.

A lot people in a few categories are very into generating stuff with "AI", I get it.
What I haven't seen yet is anybody saying "oh yeah I prefer AI-generated music/summaries/code/images/customer support to the human version"
Like, literally nobody ever popped up in my timelines here or elsewhere saying they *want* what they *consume* to be generated by chatgpt. At most, they're indifferent.
I think this means something, doesn't it?

@npub1wc2…4sk7 aha right, i should've asked you

2024-09-05 12:16:00 UTC

@npub1wc2…4sk7 yup. There was a change in how descriptors are implemented (don't remember the details) and we had some logic that relied on that.
The fix was two lines, but we wouldn't have spotted it without tests.

@npub1wc2…4sk7 static typing doesn't help with business logic, unfortunately. And some business logic gets low-level enough that the change from .10 to .11 breaks things (source: wrote and updated said logic)

I started a new job, where TDD wasn't used from the beginning.
For this reason, updating #Python from 3.10 to a later version is not going to be a matter of changing a dockerfile and fixing what breaks (2h task) but it's going to be a serious endeavor that might take days or more.
Kids, love yourself, love your future self and *use TDD*.

I realized that I'm perfectly fine with (and often appreciative of) other people's self-promotion - I even make purchases, when the time is right.
So, I guess my revulsion towards *my own* self-promotion isn't, like, a healthy thing but, rather, just another example of my general maladjustment.
Thus, I have decided to take advantage of my *checks notes* single new follower to embark on a campaign: I will link to and try to explain all my tracks, one by one.
Hope you don't mind. ❤️
