When I say that the "ship has sailed" I don't mean you shouldn't disagree with the abuse of the term, of course; just that it's so common that I don't find it likely to revert any time soon and, unfortunately, the way language works means that it's likelier that when you say "Nazi", your interlocutor will understand "stupid right wing asshole" rather than "actual Nazi".
