Speaking of (neo)vim startup times, my laptop is this funny generation of modern Intel that reintroduced the TURBO button from the 90s.
Without TURBO: 115 ms
With mild TURBO: 75 ms
With proper TURBO: 50 ms
What an exciting time to live in.

2026-10-25 09:32:13 UTC

Spent most of yesterday making neovim start faster. Yeah, I do feel like fool trying to make a text editor start faster in the age of LLM coding agents writing code, but whatever. Little wins, little bits of happiness…
It went from noticeable (200 ms) to unnoticeable (100 ms).
If anything, at least it's useful to know where the line between noticeable/unnoticeable is.

I have been accused of being the reply guy before (when I recommended trying roller skates to someone who just so happened to have published a blog post about using many different methods of transport in one day, and skates were not one of them). So I won't post this as a reply; let's do a subtoot instead.
A post on my timeline suggests that walking away from open-source is not good enough. That we need to walk from computers altogether.
Here me out my AuDHD friends. Alcohol and drugs is great and all that, but not healthy. Try roller skates. It's like drugs. And it's much simpler. No complex chemicals, no "are you over 18", no "whose round is it".
Just strap some wheels (with bearings) to your feet and wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

The other day I heard news that people are buying .si domains because the orange bastard said it's Super Intelligence now, and remembered I always wanted one for my old IRC nickname. Back then I didn't get it because it was limited to Slovenian businesses, but that restriction's been lifted.
As a result, I'm now the proud owner of both $ME@gmail.com and gmail.com@$ME email addresses.
Can't wait to confuse some some life insurance clerks with this.

In related news, the number of times someone in London asked me
1) whether Czechia and Czech Republic are the same country
2) whether it's pronounced Čekija or Čečija
this week is non-zero.
Most weeks it is. 😭

Opening and Happy Hours (£4 pints) at the Blackhorse Beer Mile (Walthamstow, London E17).
Hand-written HTML/JS/CSS. Actually, the whole "what brewery is open right now?" logic is mostly CSS, with JavaScript only telling CSS what time it is (and Python generating the keyframes). Not rocket science, but I think it's quite cool nonetheless. 🙂

No lessons learned. It was a stress free experience (traveling alone today). Not prohibitively expensive either - shared the ride with a few strangers.

@nprofile…6ak9 No hodně štěstí s hledáním obchodu.

@nprofile…6ak9 Oh well… těžká otázka. Je dcera stejnej autista jako já? Potřebuje mít stoprocentně stejný fonty stejný velikosti a stejný okraje a řádkování ve všech knížkách, a je pro to ochotná udělat úplně cokoliv, včetně překročení zákona? Pak cokoliv, kde běží KOReader — PocketBook, Kobo, starej Kindle co jde jailbreaknout, tak něco.
Čím novější e-ink panel tím lepší, a barevný spíš nebrat — mají horší kontrast a potřebují i přes den podsvícení.

And then somehow disable the microphone on the phone - that's another challenge.

One of the many reasons we don't have Alexa/Siri (a voice controlled assistant) at home is because we don't trust the companies to listen to us all day.

What if we had an old school phone handset (📞) in our kitchen and that was literally the only microphone it had. That would be somewhat acceptable, right?
Any ideas how to implement it?

Head-on collisions you're 100% correct but if I understand the photo correctly you'd have simply crumbled the front left of your vehicle and got sent spinning. Eventually maybe getting off the road and rolling a few times—airbags triggered 99.9%.

Been off Fedi for a while, sorry — life’s busy, in a good way. Summary:
bronze in the British 6hour Endurance Challenge (ultra-endurance inline speed skating, category Solo Male, done 142 km)
built and launched https://e17.beer/hours/ (table of opening and happy hours, almost entirely in HTML/CSS with little JavaScript; will post about this more later if anyone’s interested in the technical—or even non-technical—details)
got a bit more involved with KOReader upstream, mainly around the PocketBook platform support
random contributions in the neovim ecosystem
xmonad getting neglected unfortunately, but will get back to it at some point (the only item on the list that can actually pay a little bit…)

@nprofile…ragk same although it's been so long I don't even remember losing stuff - my neurotic habits are THAT good (and also since I'm probably a bit more autistic than you, and my father and his mother likely were as well, this stuff was beaten into me VERY EARLY)
anyway, better to unintentionally lose stuff than to intentionally remove someone else's precious stuff, like my nan used to, and like Vlasta does these days
also btw my other nan, who's still around and is a slightly different kind of neurodivergent that my father's mom, is also called Vlasta
(what an absolute marvel of a post, huh? a bit of "me too", a bit of banter bashing our beloved mate, and then an educational piece about Vlasta being a gender neutral first name)

@nprofile…ragk just in case you missed it - are you aware that you can enable Emacs key theme in gtk and get C-w, C-u, C-k etc. working in browser text fields?
"obviously" this then conflicts with C-w closing the tab and so the behaviour depends on whether a text input is in focus, which is quite annoying but still better than closing the tab ALWAYS

@nprofile…hdtn have a look at https://mapy.cz/ and https://www.locusmap.app/ - both are extremely good map apps, both support Android Auto, both use OSM data (mapy uses their own for Czechoslovakia but OSM elsewhere), and may or may not be cheaper
I probably wouldn't use Locus for driving, but it's a swiss army knife for hiking, cycling, geocaching, etc.
Mapy.cz's target audience is more mainstream and it does lane guidance and such.
It might be overwhelming if you're not used to Czech maps. We are internationally known for having the greatest hiking trail signage and maps, but it's very information dense compared to Google Maps.

But honestly, email just doesn't spark joy any more. Also I get way too much email… :-)

2026-04-17 23:31:30 UTC

Today I've finally given up on self-hosting email. After 22 years.
I'm not even slightly nostalgic.
When I shut down the IRC daemon a few years ago, I was nostalgic. I have many happy memories of playing with it, making friends, meeting people. And then moving on to freenode and later libera.chat.
Email, however, was only fun at the very beginning, when everything was new and fun. It quickly became a chore. Spam. Maintaining reputation by setting it up just right to prevent relaying and backscatter. Never-ending security updates.
It's hard to keep up at the best of times, but then I burned out (repeatedly) and realised I can't do this any more. It's time to pay someone who knows what they're doing.

@nprofile…0u3c I can agree with that. Having an easy click to squash as an EXTRA functionality just in case someone submits a shit PR with a mess of commits in it and you want to quickly merge it — yeah sure.
But squash merge by default? Squash merge as the only allowed merge method? That's heresy. :-)
(I may have told my manager, possibly my skip level, that it's worse than genocide, and I'm still surprised there were no negative consequences.)

2026-04-14 14:44:06 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…0u3c I mean yeah, if you have GitHub and want every commit tested then you have to create stacks of PRs. If you want to review and comment on separate commits then you have to create stacks of PRs.
But that's only because they _chose_ to ignore the fact we have the concept of a "commit".
They could add a checkbox to run CI on all commits. It would consume exactly as much resources as re-running CI after force-pushing your stack of 20 branches/PRs. They could add the ability to comment on individual commits. But no.

2026-04-14 14:41:33 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…0u3c Why create commits manually in a different branch? Just git commit --fixup, rebase --autosquash, push --force-with-lease? And review PRs commit by commit?
The only good reason to squash merge is people who can't get their feature branch in order because commit --fixup and rebase --autosquash is too complicated for them. As an unnamed friend of mine once said, this is a problem that you ought to fix in your hiring process.

What does `git gh-stack sync` do? Not much:
∙ `git log --simplify-by-decoration --topo-order`plus a few extra flags computes the graph of PRs and their target branches
∙ `git push (--force-with-lease)` if anything changed
∙ `gh pr create` any new PRs
∙ `gh pr edit --base` any existing PRs if the order (tree shape) changed
And then shift-s in tig is bound to `git gh-stack branch create $commit`.
That's it. Oh yeah it draws a nice ascii graph as well.

Also this is a good a moment to share how I've been getting on with stacks of to-be-squash-merged PRs myself:
These days, git rebase has --update-refs and also --rebase-merges, so one can quite comfortably work on a whole tree of commits, and then one just needs a command to sync that tree into a stack/chain/tree of PRs. So that's what I built for myself the other day.
The workflow:
∙ edit, commit, edit, commit, edit, amend, edit, fixup, merge, rebase, whatever — literally do whatever (including inner merges) to get my feature branch ready for submitting
∙ start tig, choose points where I want to split it into PRs, press shift-s to mark it using a special branch
∙ git gh-stack sync — will push all these branches and open PRs
🧵…

GitHub announces support for stacked PRs. As in, they built an extra abstraction on top of PRs because people keep insisting that squash merging is a good idea. PR is the new commit. Stack of PRs is the new pull request. A bit mad if you ask me. All we really needed was:
∙ review PRs commit by commit
∙ approve/request-changes on individual commits
∙ maybe merge the first few approved commits from a PR and keep the rest as work-in-progress
But anyway, this stacked PRs madness is better than nothing I guess? Corpos doing squash merging aren't going anywhere. Might as well make ourselves comfortable.

@nprofile…0u3c I think the idea is that now you may be able to just make all the perfect tooling for yourself, yourself.
That was my interpretation of https://mariozechner.at/posts/2026-03-25-thoughts-on-slowing-the-fuck-down/ anyway.

@nprofile…ragk But they can actually eliminate employees, no? I can absolutely imagine that I might be able to wield an AI agent in a way that makes a few of my colleagues unnecessary.
Perhaps it will cost just as much but I won't be burning out by having to argue with people who refuse to learn the most basic stuff and whose communication deficiencies make me gaslight myself into insanity.
I mean, I'm just as worried as the rest of Fedi about the pedophile billionaire class mishandling the economy changing due to AI. But I'm also cautiously excited about being able to work on a product myself without having to argue with pricks.

My therapist knows I'm mad and she hasn't even seen my dotfiles.
The psychiatrists didn't see them either.
Makes me wonder what fun diagnoses I could get… :-)

@nprofile…0u3c @nprofile…eghl tbf my alacritty conf just says `normal = { family = 'Misc Fixed' }` and it works
well… it also needs to say `size = 9.38`, WINIT_X11_SCALE_FACTOR = "1", plus https://github.com/liskin/dotfiles/blob/home/.fonts/Makefile and https://github.com/liskin/dotfiles/blob/home/.config/fontconfig/conf.d/70-fixed.conf but then it absolutely Just Works™

@nprofile…eghl @nprofile…0u3c i just googled this and found this absolute gem:

tells you everything, doesn't it?

@nprofile…ragk Do you also have the Cassandra complex? Probably more of an AuDHD/autism thing. Probably hurts me in my career more than RSD. Especially when it triggers for dumb shit like the introduction of Teams.
Although, it's arguable if it actually hurt me in this last instance. I am _very_ happy to not have that job any more. And I'm almost back to being my original self, enjoying being silly, avoiding people pleasing, and just doing whatever the fuck I want at any moment.
But I can totally relate to this feeling as an outsider in every community. I've been trying to redefine the definition though — trying to see the few people who're happy to have me there, rather than those turning their backs (literally).

tak třeba to s lychee bude lepší; no anebo nebude, protože kvůli scrapování spousta webů blokuje roboty včetně tady těch "dobrých"

@nprofile…qaxz Yeah I guess I should just unfollow half of the people I follow and we all win. I waste less time on social media and we avoid these conversations that neither side enjoys.
Still, it's kinda sad. Fedi was meant to be _the_ place for neurodivergent folk to feel at home. How t f is the face to face world easier than this? That feels like we've done something wrong here :-)

@nprofile…4urq If I had to choose between manipulative and in need of serious self expression help, I'd probably go with the latter, as the former would require a mastery of social interactions that I almost certainly lack.
That is, if we're still assuming some good faith in this discussion…
Anyway, I would suggest you go back to the original thread and bully the actual reply guys there.
I tried to make a humorous suggestion, not to give unsolicited advice. I grossly miscalculated how it will be received, and I missed important context about the bicycle trip (as Zoë helpfully pointed out). I apologised and tried to learn what I could have done better.
If you still think I deserve more beating, I might need to block you.

Let me know what opinion you end up with. I've had some "make me irrationally happy" drinks earlier so I can take some more beating I hope. I mean, don't get me all cancelled please but a small personal beating I can take.

> If you're a grown man and you earnestly think the only way to reply on here is to give unsolicited advice to women
Since you went to the trouble of looking this post up, would it be that much more trouble to go through my replies as well and verify whether "giving unsolicited advice to women" is indeed something I'm likely to consider "the only way to reply on here"? Perhaps I really am completely psychotic and thus unable to perceive reality (and I have certainly been gaslighted into thinking as much in the past…), but when I look at my reply history, I don't see the pattern you're suggesting.
Anyway, I can get behind your missing. Men are awful, statistically. I want to be better. But you're not helping.

@nprofile…ln4k It does help indeed! Thank you.
I definitely missed that long-distance trip context. When I re-read my reply with that context in mind, it's hard to NOT see how ridiculous and off-topic (and thus potentially creepy reply-guy-ey) it sounds :-)
Calling my suggestion to strap wheels on one's feet and roll down the road as problem solving is very generous of you. It was merely a silly suggestion, inspired by this blog post about forms of transport <https://www.girlonthenet.com/london-transport-25/> that I recall reading earlier this year. A joke that landed really badly, it would seem.
I shall refrain from replying to OP further. I enjoyed reading her posts, but I unfollowed lest I feel tempted to interact again.

@nprofile…ln4k @nprofile…4urq @nprofile…lgr3 it was definitely not meant that way!
if you don't mind me asking one extra question - was there any way I could have suggested expanding one's horizons from bicycles to wheels on one's feet that would be acceptable on Fedi, or was the only correct thing for me to do to never reply in the first place?
