"SNP MP Lara Bird and Scottish Greens MSP Kate Nevens said they were prevented from entering the territory before being questioned and eventually turned away.
Bird said in a social media post that they had intended to "stand alongside Palestinians being attacked for harvesting olives on their own land".
They had travelled to the region as part of a Progressive International delegation that also included Labour MP Clive Lewis and a former member of the Basque senate."

"A spokesperson said: “This is gobsmacking. Clearly, the police need to investigate and Sarah Helm must face the full force of the law, just like others who appear to express support for any proscribed terrorist organisation. But this raises extremely serious questions for Jonathan Powell and the Govt.
...Mr Powell, who leads on our country’s national security and has been intricately involved in our Middle East diplomacy, must publicly denounce this rhetoric if he is to continue in post.”

UK media outlets publish 9 pro-war articles to every 1 anti-war article.
"The Starmer government’s ban on Palestine Action under terrorism legislation has triggered a 660 percent increase in arrests for “terrorism,” mostly involving people who were nabbed for holding a sign expressing support for the proscribed group. If these arrestees are actually convicted — and many are being tried in no-jury courts — there will be more political prisoners in the UK than in Vladimir Putin’s Russia."

I took a look at the bookies' odds for the Makerfield election today, and Labour were odds-on favourites to win, in spite of Reform cleaning up in the council elections just a couple of weeks ago.
Reform UK are in second place with best odds at 10/3, with Restore Britain coming in third at 8s and 7s.
The Tories and Libs are predictably nowhere, but the GPEW are currently at 500/1, with the longest odds coming in at 1000/1 if anyone fancies a high return on a G&D replay.

I suspect that there's a lot more public climate concern than Western political leaders and media typically present, and if global geopolitics develops into a polar choice between clean energy and fossil fuels then the US could very easily be caught on the wrong side of history.
Some might say that it would be an apt end of a US empire waging war on the back of 3000 year old man-made 'prophesies'.

The final irony may yet turn out to be that the US becomes dependent on what it knows (monopolising oil and gas to support the PetroDollar) at the same time as China flips to renewables and nuclear power and no longer needs them.

Some of the rhetoric from the US suggests a grudging acceptance that they've already lost their economic and technical hegemony to China on too many fronts to seriously compete *unless* they use force to quickly co-opt equivalent resources and supply chains to match what China's built over the past couple of decades.
That Trump is threatening long-term allies and talking about how the US 'needs' to own Greenland, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, .... all makes sense in this respect.

The question for the UK is the independence of the nuclear deterrent, the extortionate cost and the dependency on the US, both in terms of paying for their systems and agreeing to host US armaments on UK territory which makes the UK an automatic target in any war.
An interesting perspective on this is whether any adversary would actually believe that the UK didn't have nuclear weapons even if we announced that we didn't, because the capability will always be there.

Labour's sensible centrists have already tied themselves in knots in trying to convince themselves and others that Corbyn's tenure (massive membership, huge turnouts, massive Labour votes) was a 'disaster', while Starmer (low turnout, way fewer votes than Corbyn, RefUK splitting the Tory vote) delivered a 'historic landslide' .
This will tip them over the edge.

A post-American internet built on FOSS and secure open standards is a wonderful end state, but it's surprising that countries haven't (yet) worked on limiting their exposure to predatory US tech by adopting existing and scalable solutions from China.
There's a sanctions problem obviously, and I'm sure that the predatory issues can be applied to Chinese tech too, but as a shorter-term mitigation to US tech monopoly it's still an option.

Not sure it's a proper term really, but I've been repeatedly struck by the excessive amounts of micro-accounting and reporting activity that goes on inside most organisations in the name of improvement and efficiency.

The NHS might be an exceptional example, but the modern business approach to Taylor-style productivity improvement seems to involve as much, if not more resource being directed at the collection and measurement of productivity data as the resource dedicated to productive work.
