As a test I vibe-coded a browser shell around WebKit. It made a pretty decent browser (tabs, bookmarks, even ad filtering). But I realize that I am not willing to maintain it so I can’t release it.
Maintenance is a cost to consider when rapidly developing apps. Dropping unsupported apps on people is not particularly helpful, especially if they start depending on them.

This isn’t new, it’s part of SMP coherency support. Typically when a thread is moved to a new core the cache needs to be cleaned and invalidated because the new thread on that core will have different MMU mappings (ignoring ASIDs). If there’s no new thread and that core is just idle, the new core can be allowed to pull cache lines from the old L1 to the new L1 on demand. This is a scattered cost that can be hidden somewhat by instruction reordering.

2026-10-16 17:31:57 UTC

- reply

If you can dedicate a core complex to a single task then cache cleaning isn’t needed. The L2 stays where it is, and the new core brings in the L1 cache lines from the old core by itself as needed, which isn’t very costly.

It’s not fundamentally different than building open source apps or writing my own, but it’s a new platform usage model of bespoke apps rapidly developed just for one person. “It’s not just thing, it’s other thing” is a common AI text trope. I wonder how much of this specific construct is due to the fact that LLMs select one word at a time. When faced with a sentence starting with “it’s”, its options are “not” or a million other words all with much lower probability.

Apple is obviously fulfilling a contractual obligation to Qualcomm. There’s no logical reason for this disparity otherwise. Having two versions of the 18 pro max, one for the US and one for the rest of the world, means double the effort in testing the radios. They wouldn’t have chosen to do that.
