shower thought: "España" has an ñ, "Česko" has a č... it would have been fun if Germany in German was "Deutßchland", Poland in Polish was "Połska" and Portugal in Portuguese was "Portugãl"

Sending good vibes to everyone at #FOSDEM! I couldn't make it this year, but I hope to be there next time!
If you're there, reply with your favorite talk so far!

@nprofile…jqvx the conclusion I arrived to in one of my talks on minimalism at FOSDEM is that programming tasks have an inherent complexity to them, and it can either be represented in the program source or not, in which case it is living in your head. In dynamically typed languages, you're still running a type checker in your head. In C, you're doing lifetime tracking in your head. We're always running the most complicated dependently-typed checker in our heads, if the problem itself needs it.

There was this time when @nprofile…cc5z said that Mastodon's brand was anger and it really struck a chord and stuck with me ever since.
The easiest way to get traction here is still through outrage (no need for a rec algorithm), and people do fall for the dopamine kick. Hell, even this post is a sort of a baity outrage post, but it does suck to see a FOSS project posting its progress report here and half of the replies are cheapshot criticism.

@nprofile…6f7t my body is an Apple II whose disk drive makes a funny noise when booting and sometimes it stops halfway through with a beep and ?I/O ERROR. Then I try again and it boots all the way to the HELLO program. I should look into this, but hey, maybe it will boot right away next time!

This is exactly how I feel about the Trolley Problem.
It is a completely unrealistic propaganda device for a kind of utilitarian philosophy. One with terrible consequences we see all around us today.
The fact that it comes from and is especially popular in the English-speaking world (and has slowly spread to the rest of the world via memes in the recent years) also denounces its lack of universality. It is not a fundamental moral dilemma. It is exactly what this story describes.
