@nprofile…trls Oooh thank you for the detailed response! This kind of response is what I'm interesting in from the viewers of the video!
Great, glad you don't strongly disagree! Indeed, I am generalising in many ways. This is my intention.
With respect to not destroying. I feel it takes a lot of effort to bring some change in the world and we have limited time. I have found that focusing on destruction breeds the wrong attitude. We focus on the negativities that the bad things bring, instead of the positivities we could bring to the world. I feel this wears us down.
With respect to creating vs shaping/changing. Shaping, I do like for sure. Changing, I don't dislike, I just have found it much more difficult to change rather than start from scratch. Of course, many times the only way might be to change, I won't deny that.
With respect to the technocratic perspective. I am curious to understand more how you mean this, I'm not sure I do. But in general, this is a technocratic approach inasmuch that we want expertise, data, facts to inform our decisions. I am not saying these are the only things, on the contrary. I believe our values should be the foundation of our decisions, and then expertise/data/facts and also tools/systems inform the decisions.
With respect to scientific progress as the main pivotal approach. I wouldn't agree with this. I think most of our problems don't need any scientific progress to be resolved. My main point is "make things that increase the wellbeing of all", in which I am referring to building organisations, and companies, and collectivities that are about human collaboration. How to collaborate and organise are main challenges here. Good point, though. Maybe I should clarify this more!
With respect to the what-I-can-do-society perspective. Interesting comment. I am indeed talking about this from an individual's perspective, but one thing to note is that what I'm trying to do is answer the question "what should I do in my life?", that I have asked to myself many many times. But maybe this question doesn't have to be answered? Is that what you mean?
I also find this very interesting that you say: "I feel worldwide [..] hurdles can be addressed collectively [..] (friend circles, family, associations…)". I would definitely disagree there; I am quite curious to understand how you see this. For me, I have very different views about the world with almost my whole family. With respect to my friends, I agree a lot with them, and I do collaborate on projects, but still, as everyone else, they dedicate the vast majority of their energy in making a living. There is little space for other things, which is the reason that in the video I talk about building companies. Companies, or other capitalistically sustainable organisations, allow us to improve the world while also making a living. This is one the core things I want to argue about: let's invest our energy in building companies that improve the world, instead of working at companies that make it worse!
And here, the individualistic challenge takes shape: it's extremely hard to find people to build a company with. I would think the reason is that the capitalist requirements of a daily grind and constant competition are just too much. I think it can be done, it's just really hard. And not all people have to start good companies, only a small percentage of them need to drive it, and then a lot of others can be copilots and passengers.
With respect to localised efforts. I just read Erin Kissane's article, quite liked it! I definitely agree on doing local things! They are essential, and much more meaningful for most people. And there are many great local things in the world, which is awesome; let's do even more! And I love the decentralised approach of your argument: if one neighbourhood or city figures out how to solve something, then the knowledge can disseminate in another node of the IRL "fediverse".
My additional comment is that because of the globalised nature of our world today, we need good things in the large scale too. And I identify a wide gap: there are a lot of those things that have so much potential to improve. For example, AI, a big thing today, exists almost solely in the large scale. We can say that we just ignore it, but AI is a very very powerful tool. If we ignore it, then the large scale people who didn't ignore it, will dominate (historically, this is how the West dominated the rest of the world during the industrial revolution). For this reason, I find effort in the large scale meaningful. And I especially want the people who have the background (mind, perseverance, social class) that is required today to bring large scale improvements, to work on the large scale!
I apologise for the length, I wanted to give a complete response. I am very very curious to hear what you think on these comments!

@nprofile…hftj I think democracy is ideal — the best political system! It's just not a recipe. But more to the topic, I'm happy to reconsider. What are 10 politicians of today's Western world which are great?

2025-02-28 11:27:27 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…hftj I would guess serious people do not choose to become politicians in the first place (which is a problem in itself anyway) so most of the pool is despicable people anyway. Another reason might be that, in order to win in today’s Western politics, you need to have low moral standards anyway, so the politicians we get to hear are they.
