F!@#$% cheap blade fuse holders… they're almost as bad as SB-50 connectors.
Had an outage today because I *thought* I had properly inserted a 40A blade fuse. Nope, I missed the socket ever so slightly, and that developed a high-resistance contact. It decided to drop the whole server cluster this morning.
Unfortunately holders for 10×38mm "midget" fuses seem to max out at 30A in DIN-rail format.
I'm starting to think a circuit breaker is the way to go. Sure, not as fast to "trip" as a fuse, but given the DC cabling running this rack is as thick as my finger and every server has its own blade fuse, I think I'll get away with it.

Wonderful, so there's a "notification" bot that's going around badgering people to "verify" their accounts.
Username of `NOTIFICATION` (sometimes with some letters replaced with digits)… so far observed on `mastodon.social` (blocked) and `vivaldi.social` (reported).
The irony being, one of the targets that was asked to verify, is my fire bot. The body text is the same aside from the account mentioned, right down to the hyperlink. The body text uses some non-Latin character set to emulate small capital letters (Cyrillic maybe?)l.
Clearly, this is an impersonation scam. Report and block. Do not follow the link unless you're prepared for malware.

I felt like digitising a record for later portable listening… and while I have the pots needed to fix the Rotel RP-1001 and intend to get to that… I figured I'd give a JVC JL-A1 a bit of TLC.
This is a turntable I acquired from someone downsizing, it came in good order aside from the lubricant in the main bearing gumming up the works. I cleaned it out then and replaced the lubricant with sewing machine oil, which seemed to do the job… but after sitting for a bit, the oil seems to have settled and the turntable runs slow again.
https://mr-ives.blogspot.com/2014/01/restoring-jvc-jl-a1-turntable.html
I must've had the right touch when I did it the first time, because right now I still think I'm maybe 4% off on the rotational speed. I'm getting good at getting that platter off and the bearing out though.

Learned the hard way with #NetBSD : if you want the #gd and/or #ImageMagick libraries in PHP (commonly required if you're installing Wordpress or in my case, @nprofile…gjrp), one must install the X11 sets when installing NetBSD.
You can install them later using `sysinst`, however, have a back-up of your `/etc` handy, because it's real easy to accidentally blat your `/etc` config files with system defaults that will boot to single user mode with no `sshd` running.

Silly thought of the day…
So employers very much do not like remote work, or employing humans. They're sacking humans left, right & centre and hiring LLM agents in their place.
I've never seen a LLM agent work in the office, they always work remotely. No photos, nothing… just a faceless chat bot.
I wonder what would happen if a group of us set up a website that presented such an interface, and farmed the prompts out to actual intelligence (humans), to complete and return. We could even use the "AI" acronym, because who says what the letters individually stand for — we can substitute any word starting with A, and pair it with any word starting with I.
Employers would get the "interface" they want. We get to work from home and complete interesting challenges.
Lots needs to be worked out of course, and the workforce would need to be both huge and global… but given how unregulated things are, you could probably get away with a lot whilst still ensuring a fair income for those supplying the intelligence.

6 months ago, I stood up a #Matrix server using synapse and #OpenBSD as an experiment for Brisbane WICEN.
Matrix is great, feels a lot like Slack in terms of how it operates from the user. The fact it supports end-to-end encryption out-of-the-box is good for those that need that.
Not so great is its insistence that this be mandatory: the user has to be knowledgeable enough to back up their private key somewhere and know how to upload it back in, or have an existing client logged in that can "vouch" for any new client that logs into their account. I feel this will confuse and confound some of the less technical members of our group, so maybe not quite the holy grail I was after, but very close.
I won't ditch the server just yet, but time to evaluate something else: #XMPP. I've just installed #NetBSD (because, stuff LLM slop) on a VM, and I'll start working through getting ejabberd going.
XMPP isn't as far ahead on the many-to-many video chat that Matrix is (still in the design phase for XMPP, whereas Matrix Call has a working proof-of-concept based on LiveKit), but it is stable and well supported, so we'll give it a look.

Might be an issue if you have a disability that precludes bending down to plug in a socket. Also harder to keep rain & dirt out.
Perhaps somewhere between the two, the socket could be installed in a bollard. That could be made not much wider than the socket itself. Still fairly discrete without the maintenance and accessibility headaches.

Personally I think HTML in email was a mistake: HTML 2.0 was alright, but once it gained scripting and stylesheets that are turing-complete, we wound up with something that's just begging for trouble … but it's here now.
In the message source, the bold text should be wrapped with <strong> or <b> tags. If your client is doing that, then this is a rendering issue and will depend on how the receiver has their email client configured.

Playing around with #NetBSD again… so I have a Intel NUC running it. One of the thing I frequently have to deal with, being an embedded software developer *and* an amateur radio operator, is #SerialPorts.
More often than not, USB serial ports. Now, I'm used to the Linux way of doing things, where everything is accessed through a /dev/tty* device.
We used to do it the BSD way with a device like /dev/cua0 (16550 UART on ISA 0x3f8 IRQ 4; COM1 for you DOS people) being your serial port ignoring carrier detect, and /dev/ttyS0 was the same serial port but required CD to be up. This got deprecated years ago, so /dev/cua0 disappeared, and we were left with /dev/ttyS0.
I grabbed a test rig I made for work, this is Zephyr RTOS on a Raspberry Pi Pico. It enumerates two CDC-ACM serial ports, one with the Zephyr shell, and the other is a USB serial port. You use the shell port to tell it how to route the RXD/TXD lines on the other serial port, with the board supporting RS-485, RS-422 and TTL serial. On Linux, it shows up as `/dev/ttyACM${n}` and `/dev/ttyACM$(( ${n} + 1 )`. `udev` also creates these symbolic links:
```
stuartl@rikishi ~ $ ls -l /dev/serial/by-id
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 26 10:58 usb-WideSky.Cloud_Pty_Ltd_WideSky_Hub_Test_Rig_E663AC91D3665F30-if00 -> ../../ttyACM0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 26 10:58 usb-WideSky.Cloud_Pty_Ltd_WideSky_Hub_Test_Rig_E663AC91D3665F30-if02 -> ../../ttyACM1
stuartl@rikishi ~ $ ls -l /dev/serial/by-path/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 26 10:58 pci-0000:00:14.0-usb-0:2:1.0 -> ../../ttyACM0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 26 10:58 pci-0000:00:14.0-usb-0:2:1.2 -> ../../ttyACM1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 26 10:58 pci-0000:00:14.0-usbv2-0:2:1.0 -> ../../ttyACM0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 26 10:58 pci-0000:00:14.0-usbv2-0:2:1.2 -> ../../ttyACM1
```
This is handy because if I have two of these, it doesn't matter which gets detected first, I know which device is which. The links ending in `-if02` or `.2` will be the data port, and the `-if00` / `.0` ones will be the shell control port.
In NetBSD, I plug this same MCU in and I get 4 devices:
- `/dev/dtyU0`
- `/dev/dtyU1`
- `/dev/ttyU0`
- `/dev/ttyU1`
The files actually always exist, but they get mapped to this physical device when the driver detects it and enumerates it on USB.
If I plug in another dongle, I get another pair, a `/dev/dtyU2` and a `/dev/ttyU2`. The choice of `/dev/dtyU[012]` is dependent on which order the devices is detected… which on USB is indeterminate as they can be hotplugged.
The only clue I get is the `usbdevs -v`; it shows a device number and serial number information.
```
vk4msl-nbsd# usbdevs -v
Controller /dev/usb0:
addr 0: super speed, self powered, config 1, xHCI root hub(0x0000), NetBSD(0x0000), rev 1.00(0x0100)
```
lacking is the knowledge that there are *two* devices allocated to device 18 (the test rig).
Given a `/dev/ttyU${n}` or `/dev/dtyU${n}` device node, how do I find out about the device attached to it? Seems assuming a device node is fraught with danger.

@nprofile…a2ht As a non-driver (never driven a car), I've always wondered why they park the reverse gear right below or next to the top gear.
As in you'll start off in first (top left)… shift down to second… then up and right a little for third… down for fourth… then up and a little more right for fifth…
Seems asking for a moment of distraction to make the driver forget they're in fifth and not third… accidentally pull the gearstick from fifth to reverse… *FATAL CRUNCH*!
Seems it'd be more sensible putting it next to or opposite first gear but I guess there were mechanical constraints that prevented that.

Out of curiosity… I had a look at the job situation at the moment … because let's face it, the writing is on the wall at my current position. I've been there 15 years and I'm an old fart by IT standards.
Most people by the time they've entered their second decade of experience of "being 21", they're management… but that's just not me.
I'm also quite an oddball, in that I am a part-timer now, quite conservative in the tools I use, and some would say, quite opinionated. For example, while the work laptop is running Ubuntu 24.04, I've set up FVWM3 as the desktop environment and my "IDE" of choice is gVim. I sic AdNauseum onto blocking Rovo out of Atlassian's UI frequently, and even went as far as using a TUI interface to Jira to avoid it. While conservative in the *style* of tools I use, I still believe in keeping things up-to-date. So while I might not use all the latest features, I do believe in keeping up with security updates.
At work I mainly code in C/C++ or JavaScript, and greatly prefer the former. At home, I will use whatever gets the job done: C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, PHP, Bourne shell… and know enough SQL to be dangerous. I also do some circuit design (Kicad) and know which end of a soldering iron to hold. When I talk "full stack" I mean silicon to frontend. Not the world's best designer, but give me a design and I will try and find a way to make it work.
My home machine fleet are a mix of Gentoo, AlpineLinux, Debian, Ubuntu and OpenBSD machines, having been a Linux user since 1996. Windows is a legacy OS for playing games, and I'm past playing games these days.
Last job was found through Seek… so headed there. "Ohh no no no, you can't browse anonymously!!! We require you log in now!"
Well, F' you Seek. You didn't need that before.
Had a look on Gumtree, and well… it's a pretty sorry tale if you don't drive, don't have a construction white card or any real trade background. Plus, I'm over commuting for work: one position advertised as "Brisbane Area" covered pretty much everywhere from Springfield to Yeppoon, and as far west as Tambo!
Not sure if the newspapers have a jobs section. Job search like it's 1990 yay!
The "cushy" job though is over, and I may be door-knocking for work by this time next year.

@nprofile…w0mx Yeah, trouble is, I have two bank accounts. Suncorp throws an error if I try to use a PayID even though it has an option for it. BOQ doesn't even have an option for it.
The only methods that work with both are BPay and the old BSB/Account. So I need to convert the information I have, into one of those two forms or not make the payment. Those are my choices.
Some might suggest Paypal, but I can't figure that one out either… works well enough if I'm buying something from an online shop, I just hit "Pay as Guest" and fill in my details, job done… but anything else, and it demands a username and password, I'm not giving it my banking username and password.
I don't need the money to get there straight away, the payment I want to make has been sitting at my end for close to a year, a few days isn't going to matter, I just want to be able to make the payment at all.

2026-01-24 08:31:36 UTC

One thing I don't understand these days about the banking system.
For years, you needed 3 things to transfer money into someone's account anywhere in Australia: BSB, account name, account number.
The BSB was a 6-digit number, the account number was usually at least 8. I can accept it probably isn't the friendliest system, but it worked.
Now, the modern preference is a "Pay ID". I've seen numerical ones, and I've seen ones that look like email addresses.
Yet, the Internet banking still expects the BSB, account name and account number.
How the hell do you convert from a "PayID" to a BSB/name/number? Clearly it is possible, otherwise banks would have a field for "PayID" or people would be using the old way instead.

@nprofile…m2mw The analogy isn't a bad one… and I can't help but think of this comedy film:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Quest
It's a perfect metaphor of AI (LLMs): the alien race depicted there pretty much sums up the thinking of "AI believers". The alien race didn't twig to the fact that this was "make believe" done for entertainment, they thought it was real.
The "AI believers" truly want to believe that the LLM is "thinking", rather than regurgitating the most probable sequence of words to follow the prompt. They can't fathom the idea that their "superintellgence" is a glorified Markov-Chain bot.

@nprofile…z5mg I'd at least go to the trouble of permanent antenna mounts and organising accessible power and antenna connections.
If the amenities are there, it makes throwing a set in the vehicle easy, whether it be HF, VHF, UHF or anything else. If you can run some CAT5e runs, you've got a way to hook up a remote head unit as well.
We did something similar with my father's ute… the antennas all terminate to a panel of BNC connectors and three runs of CAT5e. A couple of coax feeds run from there to the front passenger foot-well.
We have a Yaesu FT-857D permanently mounted, with the head unit just above the rear vision mirror and an extension speaker in the foot-well… one of the CAT5e runs supplies the 6-pin head unit and an external speaker run, a second provides the microphone connection.
The third CAT5e terminates in the front passenger foot-well along with the extra coax, allowing for connection of CB radios, LTE mobile antennas, or rigging up my FTM-350AR with the radio unit riding shotgun with the FT-857D.
Removing the FT-857D is merely a case of removing the head unit mount, tucking away a couple of cables and unbolting the radio unit from the canopy.

@nprofile…ge5x Yeah, the content license people seem to live in a parallel universe. One where VPNs do not exist and no one knows how to plug the headphone out on a radio into the line-in of a computer running Icecast (or use a RTL-SDR to "rip" the HE-AAC+ audio data from the DAB+ stream) … but I digress.
AM really has a content problem. Much of the band is talk-back stations, either current affairs or sports. That'll bring a certain audience, but not everyone is into that.
It's not a band that's well suited to music … it sorta works, and before 1980, it's all that was available … but it struggles against FM. Plus, you've got a lot of music producers that seem to think everyone's going to be listening on a high-end stereo system.
The BBC I seem to recall, had a listening room set up with a low-end mono speaker that gave a listening experience similar to that of a 1960s era transistor radio: if your song didn't sound good on that, it didn't get played on the BBC. Hardly any top-40 stuff today would make it under that constraint (which is a wonder given how much gets listened to on compromised tablet/phone speakers).
Maybe the answer is, again, back with the sorts of shows they broadcast. Put the genuine comedians back on the air… perhaps what we need is less Kyle Sandilands wannabies and more like Spike Milligan.
Back around 2008~2009, ABC Radio National used to broadcast lots of older BBC radio shows just before the 6AM news. "My Word", "My Music", "Sorry I Haven't A Clue"… and "The Goon Show" on Fridays. These were shows that actually worked quite well on AM, because back then that's all they had.
No none of it was politically correct, but it was a moment of silliness that was the antidote to a highly strung period during the global financial crisis.
I think given the high emotions flying around just now, this is probably exactly what we need.

@nprofile…ge5x AM struggles in cities because the radio receiver will scream like a banshee around any source of interference… but once you get out of the cities, AM really is the best option.
FM is by far the best option in cities, but in a lot of places, the band is saturated. ACMA seems to like keeping wideband FM stations on a 800kHz separation, and I think the specs are ±300kHz deviation from the centre frequency. I did a check a couple of years ago when 4KQ shut down… there was not a single frequency that was unoccupied within 300km of Brisbane.
DAB+ is the next best thing. It's got far better audio quality than AM, and if you let it, it can get close to FM… but if the signal is in any way marginal, it stutters. Human hearing can tune out the slight hiss of a weak FM signal and if it's weak enough (e.g. the receiver loses the 19kHz pilot sub-carrier), many FM sets will revert to mono in order to maintain an intelligible signal. Human hearing doesn't do so well filtering out a glitching stuttering DAB+ signal.
This is assuming the broadcaster doesn't just crank the compression knob all the way to 11. "Coles TAS" being the worst sounding music station I've ever heard: 16kbps HE-AAC+ is not sufficient for broadcast of music.
Even the Southern Cross Austereo stations I find, are unlistenable with certain audio equipment. Used to like listening to "Triple M Classic rock" when they broadcast in 48kbps, but since they now use 32kbps across the board with my cheapo stereo, I hear compression artefacts that ruin the experience.
I'm guessing if I brought it up with their management they'd suggest I just stream it over the Internet — at which point I ask, what's the point in spending up big on DAB+ multiplex slots if the quality is so poor?
We have underutilised AM spectrum, ever since 1978 when some brightspark decided we should move from a 10kHz separation to a 9kHz separation to "make room" for stations that never happened. I think this was about the same time as the Motorola C-QUAM AM stereo experiment, which was a flop.
One wonders why the ACMA didn't look more closely at Digital Radio Mondiale. It's digital, like DAB+, but it operates on MW and SW bands. It can do stereo audio in decent quality (I think ~64kbps HE-AAC+, which is better than many DAB+ stations), uses spectrum we're underutilising, and likely would propagate a lot further than FM or DAB+.
The other option would be to do to FM stations what the ACMA did to UHF CB. UHF CB used to be 40 channels, with a ±5kHz deviation and a 5kHz channel spacing. To bump it to 77 channels, they reduced the deviation to ±2.5kHz, and inserted the new channels in between the old ones.
Not sure what impact this would have for wideband FM reducing it to a ±150kHz deviation, but a similar deviation was used for analogue TV audio (which is WFM)… RDS might suffer a little and I'm not sure about range, but it would allow a 400kHz separation between stations which would help squeeze more FM stations in our capital cities. Lower deviation will mean "quieter" stations, but radios have volume knobs, we can fix that ourselves.

Also `vim` will need a `-` argument to tell it to read from `stdin`; so `| vim -`. `<<` should probably be a `<`; since `<<` is used for a "here" document, and that's not what you're supplying.
Not familiar with using `socat` for this purpose and I've never heard of the `fucktty` command so can't comment about whether those commands are correct or not.

The holders are rated to 30A, I've actually got two lots of holders, the original ones are 600V rated, the others are 1000V. I'm using panes with an open-circuit voltage of <30V and they wire up in parallel *after* the fuse holders.
I have 10A fast-blow fuses in there now (Littelfuse 0BLF010.T). The panels I'll be putting up on Monday have a short-circuit current of ~18A, so they'll definitely blow at midday. I have some new 20A fuses (Littelfuse 0BLN020.T) coming.
They're kinda pricey and I've got to order them. I was looking at a 5AG fuse today, which I have a stack of 40A ones in stock (I realise my holders are 30A and the panels won't even break 20A)… but really, what is the difference between a 5AG and a midget fuse?
The dimensions are reportedly the same. This is an extra-low-voltage DC install (<48V)… are the midget fuses just a higher rating for industrial use or is there some other gotcha I need to be wary of?

@nprofile…2f0c The funny thing is… normally one would tune the AM radio *receiver* to an unused frequency.
Here, they're asking you to go to the transmitter your radio is tuned to, and tune *it* off-frequency. I'm sure the local spectrum management people will be delighted to help!

I was planning on doing a back-up of the #Ceph cluster today in preparation of migrating it to a later release… but of course, I've misplaced the PSU for my external 4TB back-up drive.
I noticed it was getting pretty tight on space too, and given it's now 5 years old, figured it was time for a new one. I've got a 6TB one coming.
In the meantime, I had another crack at the Ericsson F5521GW 3G module in the Toughpad.
If I boot with init=/bin/bash on the kernel command line, then modprobe cdc-acm, I see 3 ACM devices appear, and I can use `screen` with them.
I managed to remove the old PIN code on the SIM card I have in there but couldn't get the GPS going, most I got out of it was a "Operation not allowed" error.
Doing this in early init seems to be enough to convince the module to stay enumerated. Something though, tells it to go bugger off early in the boot sequence unless I talk to it first.
A bit of a nuisance to be honest… but I'm somewhat closer.

** Scam alert: ACCC phone numbers spoofed by scammers
------------------------------------------------------------
The National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC) is warning Australians following reports that scammers have been impersonating phone numbers belonging to the ACCC in an attempt to steal personal information.
The ACCC and the NASC (which operates under the ACCC) have become aware of scammers using publicly available ACCC phone numbers, which are listed on the agency’s official website.
Here are 2 reported cases:
* The scammers claimed to be representatives of the ACCC and requested sensitive information over the phone.
* Scammers misused the ACCC acronym to impersonate an unrelated organisation and spoke in a language other than English.
The ACCC phone numbers have been spoofed, which means that the scammers have disguised their phone number to make it look like they are calling from a trusted organisation, in this case, the ACCC. They then ask for personal information.
The ACCC and NASC will never:
* make calls from its reception numbers
* charge money for its services
* cold call or email to ask for your personal information like passwords, bank details or answers to security questions
* threaten or pressure you to stay on the line.
If you receive a call claiming to be from the ACCC where personal information such as passwords or bank details are requested, do not provide this information and hang up.
Be extremely wary of urgent requests asking you to act immediately, and never provide personal information if unsure. Do not click on any links or download attachments from messages unless you are sure it is from someone you can trust.
** Stay protected
------------------------------------------------------------
STOP – Don’t give money or personal information to anyone if you’re unsure. Scammers will create a sense of urgency. Don’t rush to act. Say ‘no’, hang up, delete.
CHECK – Ask yourself could the call or text be fake? Scammers pretend to be from organisations you know and trust. Contact the organisation using information you source independently, so that you can verify if the call is real or not.
PROTECT – Act quickly if something feels wrong. If you have had money or personal information stolen contact your bank immediately. Help others by reporting scams to Scamwatch.
** If you’ve been affected
------------------------------------------------------------
Don't be embarrassed about being scammed.
If you’ve had money or personal information stolen contact your bank or card provider immediately.
If you’ve been scammed or have provided personal information call IDCARE on 1800 595 160.
Help others by reporting scams to Scamwatch.
** Who is the National Anti-Scam Centre?
------------------------------------------------------------
The National Anti-Scam Centre is where government and industry work together to protect Australians from scams. We're harnessing shared resources and smarter analytics to identify blind spots, strengthen weak links and use data to react faster, stopping scams before they happen.
Our aim is to make Australia a harder target for scammers.

Not sure how true this is (quick search suggests it might have actually happened) … arrived by email.
Did you know that Max Planck, the father of quantum physics and a Nobel Prize winner, used to travel across Europe delivering the same groundbreaking lecture on energy quanta?
Here’s the fun part: his loyal chauffeur, who accompanied him everywhere, sat through so many of Planck’s talks that he memorized the entire scientific lecture—word for word!
One day, en route to Munich, the chauffeur joked, “Professor, I’ve heard your lecture so many times, I could deliver it myself!” Planck, amused, played along. They hatched a plan: the chauffeur would pose as the great physicist and give the lecture, while Planck would sit in the audience—disguised in the chauffeur’s cap.
When they arrived, they swapped roles. The “new Professor Planck” delivered the complex quantum lecture flawlessly. But after the talk, a sharp physicist in the audience stood up and asked an extremely challenging question.
The chauffeur paused, thought for a moment, and then replied with perfect comic timing:
“I never expected such a simple question at such a prestigious university as Munich. Why don’t we let my chauffeur answer that one?”
😂
Sometimes, genius is knowing when to pass the mic.

I have gotten through all but one… just doing one at a time. Last night I got two done. This morning I got one done before I headded to work.
During the work day, I had one scripted to wait for `ceph health` to report `HEALTH_OK`, wait a hour, then do its update unattended. I checked on it later from work and it had updated just fine.
So I scheduled the same to happen with one of my bigger nodes, "hydrogen" (they're all a periodic table naming scheme as I started with Intel Atoms). I've just finished it now, leaving one left: "carbon". It, like "hydrogen" has two disks.
I'll do the same there… wait for `HEALTH_OK`, wait a hour longer to be sure, then mark its disks out and begin the update.
I expect it'll do it overnight, and by morning I should have a Debian 11 install there.

Just updating a couple of my #Ceph nodes… it's been a long time on Debian 10, but I need to move on. Ansible no longer works with it.
Procedure so far is remove the old Ceph repositories (as they don't support anything beyond Debian 10) and lean on the fact that Debian 11 ships Ceph 14.
It's a slightly older release of Ceph 14, but it'll be enough… I can get the OS updated on all the nodes by doing them one-by-one… then when I get them all up to Debian 11… I should be able to jump to the next stable release of Ceph… then do another round of OS updates to move to Debian 12.
Ohhh boy.

It has been 0 days since a crappy SB50 connector had a contact back-away in the housing, causing the contacts to heat up and melt the housing.
Never had an issue with the 30A power pole connectors, but the SB50s, most of which are cheap clones… are not cut from the same cloth.
Allegedly these are rated for 600V 50A… I would not want to be near one that had a bad crimp when it's handling 30kW!
Needless to say, I'm now getting about 100W off the panels today with a potential of about 13V… instead of 0W with 6.3V!

Well… that complicates things.
I noticed my upstairs AP was preferring to mesh with the downstairs one instead of using the Ethernet backlink. Not a problem, but not ideal.
Started tracing, but then wasn't sure which port on the switch was what… so I go downstairs, write out what each port connects to on the core switch (Netgear GS748Tv5). Yeah I know how to party on a Friday night.
I figure I might as well punch them into its UI for future reference. I get half way through… then *boompa* out go the lights.
Looks like it's taken out a fair chunk of the block I'm in, but not the NBN infrastructure.
The switch I was configuring thankfully is on 12V back-up power (I modded it to directly power it from 12V bypassing the 240V PSU), so I can continue with a headlight.
However, the switch the upstairs AP connects to, is mains powered. So the upstairs AP is forced to mesh downstairs as it will have lost its Ethernet link. Plus the WiFi controller is *also* on mains (the WiFi network can run without it, just means I can't re-configure/monitor things).

People wonder why I'm not a fan of daylight saving's time? This here, is a pet peeve of mine regarding #DST : the ambiguity of the fallback hour.
https://codeberg.org/sjlongland/checkpoint-reporter/src/commit/088fe9534bb9c4f1754d4455f65b1d683abdbef7/src/test/java/com/vk4msl/checkpointreporter/data/table/event/EventTableTest.java#L1479-L1502
That there, are two time-stamps that both would read as 2:30AM local. One is DST, the other is standard time.
Imagine logging that, or a task scheduled for that time. Does it happen twice? Which 2:30 are you referring to?
Spring-forward is worse for scheduling, as a timer might "miss" that the clock skipped from 02:00 to 03:00. (For logging it's workable, except a pain in the arse when you want to measure time between two timestamps because you need to mind the gap.)

I've been looking at peripherals again, largely because I'm unhappy with the local selection of USB trackballs… commercial ones seem to be either wireless (who needs an extra battery to charge), bulky, or crippled.
e.g. my Kensington Orbit is good, but it's big… and has no middle button (no paste in xterm). The lack of a middle button is quite a nuisance… and I shouldn't need the L+R button hack in 2025.
Mice are good, but sometimes you don't have a big enough flat area to use one. (Or you have a cat that likes laying on the cord.) This is what made me buy the Kensington I have.
I don't like using wireless for most things as dealing with an extra battery is a needless hassle and it's not like I'm going to be far from the computer. (Headsets though I prefer wireless as I hate being tethered to the computer by my head. I don't "wear" keyboards or mice.)
Then I had a crazy peripheral idea… trackball and USB hub for plugging in security tokens.
You could have something like this:
https://ploopy.co/shop/adept-trackball-fully-assembled/ (which I'm thinking I'll get anyway, since it isn't massive, wireless or crippled).
… but then extend the case a little further to install a USB-A port for plugging in a 2FA security token, and use an embedded 2-port USB hub so you don't sacrifice a USB port on the computer.
Or use a 4-port hub and provide a port for a USB headset and keyboard as well.
Anyway, just a silly idea.

Just sent a little note to the courier's customer service…
Just a little note, you might want to check the system integration with Australian destination tracking, as I think a few things are off. This screenshot was taken on Saturday at 7PM (19:00 UTC+10; 09:00Z). Two problems I noticed:
1. "Mansfield, Vic" and "Mansfield, Qld" seem to be conflated here. Mansfield Qld would make sense because that suburb is not far from Brisbane Airport. Mansfield Vic is a real head-scratcher as that is more than 1000km away across two state boundaries. This is on par with conflating Washington DC with Washington state (which are even further apart).
2. At the time the screenshot was taken; 8:06PM (10:06Z) was an hour into the future. Both "Mansfield" locations use the same time-zone this time of year (Mansfield Qld is always UTC+10; Mansfield Vic is UTC+10 most of the year, but UTC+11 in summer … it is currently winter there).
It'd be helpful to give the time-zone offset (e.g. Saturday, 7 June, 2025 8:06 PM (UTC+10:00)), to remove any ambiguity there.
With locations here in Australia, it's probably best to include the post code: Mansfield Qld is post code 4122. That makes it very clear and distinct from Mansfield Vic (which as seen in the screenshot is post code 3722).
The reason I point out is if you look at the parcel's destination, it will show "The Gap" with post code 4061 (which is in Brisbane), there is a second "The Gap" in Queensland near Mt. Isa (post code 4825) which is over 1500km away. If you sent it to the wrong "The Gap", correcting the matter could be very costly (and it'd be the courier's cost since the item is addressed to "The Gap, 4061").

First day of winter, and what does the hot water system in this place decide to do? Pack it in after nearly ~40 years.
So tomorrow, looks like we'll be trundling up to the plumbers at Ashgrove to discuss what our options are for a new hot water system… with front-runner options looking like solar or heat pump. (Our current unit is gas, fed off bottles.)
My only concern with solar is the fact that there's quite a few solar panels on the roof already, 5 that power the servers running this Mastodon instance, and about 11 that run an inverter. A thermal solar system needs the solar panel area *plus* about 200kg of load carrying capacity.
The right battery system though, and we could just run a heat pump off our PV solar with no need to put anything new on the roof.

I used to allow sign-ups so people could leave comments (moderated). It was a small step to prevent spam being posted anonymously.
From now on, looks like you'll have to reply via the Fediverse if you want to leave a comment on my blog.
I hate the cesspool the Internet is becoming because of dodgy Internet marketing agencies.

@nprofile…gt8n The only X that went anywhere was MIT's Athena project (started in 1986) and even that is dying.
Elon Musk's legacy I think is permanent now… unless #Twitter pull a rabbit out of a hat (e.g. #ActivityPub or #ATProtocol integration), it'll fade into irrelevance very soon.

@nprofile…gj4g Someone mentioned Taco Bell should possibly do one and sell it for 47c just to really drive things home.
Dunno what would go on it apart from the chicken, maybe sauerkraut… because Trump is bitter, ohh so very bitter.

Now the challenge… finding an escape route for the AI hell I find myself in at work… since Atlassian insists on having their AI agent butt in where it's not wanted.
I'd put a #FediHire tag up to look for a new job, but the truth is it'll be a few months before I can be free of the place I'm at now (I've been working for the same mob since late-2010), not able to relocate (I'm based in Brisbane), and there aren't a lot of jobs around here for a Linux/Unix specialist like myself.
(My real Windows experience was back when it was a 16-bit shell atop DOS. Haven't used Windows regularly for ~15 years now, so don't go there.)
In truth though, I'm over IT as a career. I'd sooner scrub toilets for a living: at least I won't have some smart-arsed cistern telling me "you missed a bit".

Just moved all my sole projects that are on Github across to @nprofile…8x0h.
Stuff where others on Github have contributed are mirrored there too, but for now I leave those open. Everything else though, where I'm the sole author that is on Github, has now been archived with a link to where to find it on Codeberg.
I'll have to look into a CI solution. I've got compute power here so I might spin up something on the cluster here rather than leaning on Codeberg's limited CI compute (that way, the capacity is there for others that really do need it).
Thankfully git being git, hosting really doesn't matter much… and we're spoiled for choice in how we collaborate with `git`.

@nprofile…ucnn @nprofile…taps Quite…
I know it's one of the inland states, that's as much as I know.
Here in Australia we've got fewer states to worry about.
(Maybe fewer states is in the US' future too… Canada might grow though.)

@nprofile…taps Geography must be an interesting subject in that place…
Teacher: "What state is the city of Dayton located in?"
Class: "Ummm…"
