no, it’s on the network side. The benefit is that it doesn’t require anything at home, the downside is that you don’t (necessarily) get access to stuff on your home network. So it’s just for securing your access and using your home IP for things like streaming services

Here's where I landed on the “not VPN but VPN" dilemma. Use your home line remotely. Also I planned for this to be a paid add-on, but decided to make it free instead because if it's hard to explain it's going to be tough to sell…

yeah. explaining queuing disciplines gets real technical real fast, so how much to simplify is the trade off. But the intent is to show us dropping packets so it’s not just that we don’t have a queue and others do

Again, apologies, Finnish only, but maybe this isn't completely inscrutable. Mind commenting on my bufferbloat visualization? Especially interested in whether it makes sense if you haven't heard about bufferbloat before. https://uusinetti.fi/tekniikka

Anyone have USB shower recommendations?
Models like this one have been transformative for our cabin without indoor plumbing, but there seems to be no way to reliably avoid water ingress via the USB-C port so they'll crap out eventually. Any better designs out there?

Anyone in my extended network who I could hire to move some servers (not too many, any car is fine) from Sacramento to Santa Clara?
Retoots appreciated

Volvo (and Polestar) are in crisis mode as their flagship cars are plagued by software problems.
It’s said that car companies don’t “understand” software, but the larger issue is that they don’t *appreciate* software.
I mean, they don’t understand leather tanning or high-end speaker design either, but that doesn’t stop them from sourcing premium materials and great sound systems. But software is always bought from the lowest bidder (Infosys in the Volvo/Polestar case)

two-finger swipe down changes it. I bet you’re triggering that?

A fun bug in the latest software update for my Polestar 2:
If you coast downhill in one pedal drive for more than 1 minute and 30 seconds without touching the brakes, you lose the brakes. A real use it or lose it situation!
(Not a huge deal here in Finland since the grade must be pretty steep for the car to not stop with one pedal drive. Also affects Volvos apparently)

My suggestion for a concrete action item is to outlaw egress fees in public clouds. Sure, it’s “unfair” in the sense that bandwidth costs (a little) money, but I think it’s fine to make the hyperscalers come up with other pricing dimensions.
Note that this has already been mandated in a limited way to facilitate migrating from one cloud to another on a one-time basis. My idea is to go further, to enable companies to repatriate partial workloads while keeping others in the cloud.

Ceph: do you have a Ph.D. In Ceph? If yes, it’s great
Minio: bad performance (each object is a minimum of two files on disk but typically more like 16) combined with weird requirements like a minimum of four servers that have an identical set of disks. Replication between clusters is best effort only
SeaweedFS: great in theory, not trustworthy in practice (especially on the filer layer)
Deuxfleurs Garage: “you should make periodic snapshots of the metadata database to survive crashes”

Self-hosting a distributed S3 compatible object store is just as horrible as it was 10 years ago. I feel we’ve made great strides on the database side, for example, but this is just as bad as it always was

The only fiber cable between Finland and Germany has suffered a cut last night. The cable mostly follows the Nord Stream routing in the bottom of the baltic sea.
The remaining links are mostly via Sweden.
I would expect this to hurt Hetzner the worst, since a lot of the workloads they host in Finland are here just for the cheap electricity but are actually connecting with clients elsewhere.
Must be weeks rather than days before this is fixed

kattelin tossa just oman (firman) yksityisen sairauskuluvakuutuksen ehtoja. Yksi vaatimus on, että vakuutetun pitää olla suomalaisen sosiaaliturvan piirissä. Miksi? No siksi, että nää vakuutukset on vain helppoja keissejä varten. Isot hommat menee sitten aina keskussairaalaan koska eihän niitä pysty mikään pörriäinen hoitamaan.
