Very late to the party but I once had a lovely WoW guild meeting in Oxford, fond memories. London and Edinburgh are both lovely, and the train ride is probably quite nice. If people are starting to suggest Paris as train trip I will throw Cologne and meeting meeeee into the hat, there's a Eurostar connection. 😅 I kid, you'll just have to come visit Germany for boardgames with us next year. 😂

Yeah, it's been so long ago. It was really a terrible relationship I clung to far longer than I should have. I finally broke it off when a travel agency called to confirm the trip to Tunisia for him and his 'wife', a trip he had told me he would do on his own.

Holy shit, this Lily Allen album. 25 years ago I ended my marriage to a serial cheater, the poster boy for toxic masculinity. Listening to her glorious album gives me such flashbacks to all the gross BS of that relationship. What an album.

Definitely not just you. I raved to my wife about Foundryside and she really enjoyed it too, but Shorefall already lost her. I heard good stuff about RBJ's current novels, will pick them up. I still think he's brilliant.

I hate it when trilogies let me down. I loved the crap out of Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett. The middle book Shorefall was decent but the finale Locklands doesn't work for me at all. 40% in but I can't do it anymore. What a shame. It has one of the most creative magic systems in fantasy

I rationally know this, but it's so hard to process. She was such a good kitty. I wasn't ready to let her go. She was supposed to have a loooong kitty life, not pass away all of a sudden not even 12 years old.

Struggle gerade sehr hart mit der Trauer um Mo. Verdacht auf eine Verletzung an der Schulter, Schmerzmittel, schnelle Besserung und dann plötzliches Nierenversagen wegen des Schmerzmittels macht mich so fertig. Fühle mich so schuldig.

One of my friends loves Karin Slaughter but I tried her first two books and found them a bit too torture-porny for my tastes. Are her newer books less shocking?

If that bothers you in the first book, whoo boy, are you in for a wild ride of characters not growing whatsoever.

I'm currently reading The Priory of the Orange Tree and am loving it. I fell into the booktok rabbit hole and have a huge list of sapphic recommendations now, and it's been great so far.

I made it through book 9, Winter's Heart, and then ran out of steam. Past-me thought it was the best thing ever, current me thinks that the author had huge issues with women and understanding how friendship or relationships in general work. 😱

In March I continued to read sapphic SFF, this time The Burning Kingdom trilogy by Tasha Suri. I highly recommend this series. It's Indian-themed fantasy with two very good protagonists who are incredibly flawed and pining for each other. It touches on religion, patriarchy and grief. Loved it!

I would be crying non-stop. When we sold our apartment, the buyer found mold, it took months to resolve the issue, and my mental health was in shambles the whole time. Crossing fingers for a resolution soon!

I made that work at least. But I liked the ease with which I used to be able to share my reviews from GR. Oh well, it is what it is.

Yeah, I am so used to Goodreads but we're trying to wean ourselves off Amazon right now. At least The Story Graph has all the books I read, and a great recommendation engine. Bookwyrm just takes too much time and energy to make it work for me.

2025-01-15 17:08:47 UTC

2024 was the first year where I kinda gave up on tracking my books read. I just don't like Bookwyrm as much as I thought I would, and TheStoryGraph is also not clicking 100%. In any case, first book for this year, my review of Gearbreakers:

I love Harmonies! I am ridiculously bad at it, but it's so nice. I played the tutorial for Fromage but it broke my brain a bit. Worker placement, not my strongest bit. I must admit that I had a bit of a meltdown last week after yet another crushing defeat at a game I played with Cynthia. 🥲

Do you like worker placement? I love playing them, but I am so awful at them. Like Agricola or Istanbul.

I'm so sorry. Grief sucks. My brother passed away 3 years ago and it's still hard. In my head I talk to him all the time.
Mike was a special guy. I wish I had known him better. But I will always remember his Wildstar housing project and smile about it.
