Bangalore peeps, I've been invited by Abheek Learning Center to speak to parents and educators about the Future of Learning in the age of AI, especially how to manage children's exposure on our computing devices.
This Saturday, 9:30AM. Limited capacity.

I think I thought of a paradox of #privacy #law as it applies to Internet:
If a govt were to mandate that online platforms CANNOT look at the IP address or ANY other location-identifying info for their users, how would the platform comply with it?
Even if the platform wants to stop serving users in that govt's jurisdiction, it would require looking at some location-identifying information.. which would break the law.
Attempting to comply with the law breaks that very same law.

Oh wow.. #bluesky just started demanding birthdate!
Why is it not asking for just the age-band?
Is it for personalization or a legal mandate? Is it okay for me to lie about my birthdate?
Are they enforcing AUS/UK/EU law on worldwide users?
Why are there no docs about this?

@nprofile…jng9 @nprofile…8eua @nprofile…sjny Yes, I was thinking about AlphaGo's famous Move 37. It's entirely possible that neural networks can capture and scale the creativity we humans display when we formulate new math concepts and structures, and deterministic brute-force checking by Lean can provide the verification signal.
But human understanding and sense-making will remain valuable. Or at least we hope so. 😀

@nprofile…8eua @nprofile…sjny @nprofile…jng9 There's a breaking point for this perspective though, right?
If machines find a proof that SHA-1 is breakable, that is "valuable" - whether or not humans have understood that proof.
I am all for beauty being one of the valuable aspects of math - which the music analogy captures - but math does have real-world impact beyond beauty and joy.

@nprofile…w4zq I use GitBook - which has 2-way synchronization between a regular WYSIWYG editor and markdown files in a git repo. Surely, there are other tools like that.
One annoyance is that markdown spec does not cover many of the rich blocks article editors have.

This was a mind-bending read! 🤯
Argues that intelligence might originate outside of physics and actually come from the platonic space of mathematical patterns.
For eg: the familiar "bubble sort" algo shows cognitive skills like delayed gratification and clustering.

LOL! It gets better!
In an attempt to get out of the disastrous reveal, #Pakistan Army held a press conference and claimed that this person is an ordinary preacher. They shared his National ID card.
But that very ID belongs to Hafiz Rauf as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). It further matches data shared in the 'Sanctions List' of terrorists for one Hafiz Abdur by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)

Govt institutions in India (both state and central) keep coercing citizens to enrol for and then share their national biometric identifier #aadhaar .
The worst part is, since the Supreme court verdict, this sharing is supposed to be voluntary. But portals are built to make it mandatory and ultimately things get stuck in the courts which move glacially.

@nprofile…a0g8 Agree. But the early vision of internet probably did not imagine the world being made of most users being clients and a few being servers. If every machine would have been running both client software and server software like game servers or file sharing etc, NAT would make life difficult.
NAT both came from and encouraged most user devices being clients.

24 million users all being on the same #Bluesky server instance cannot be healthy for the decentralisation of #atprotocol.
Governance for hosting many users is complicated enough that we need many providers, not just one. Else it is likely to be a repeat of Twitter/Instagram.
Sorry to be this guy.

The golden era of #math teachers sharing amazing tips and tricks on #Twitter is over. Many left, many stopped posting and many are punished by the algorithm.
I learnt so much from them during the last decade.

How much plastic gets actually recycled and then how much of it is put back into use?

#openwrt partnered with #bananapi and releases a fully compliant, #openhardware $89 router. It's fully compliant with FCC norms, you can buy the logic board alone for $68, and on every purchase $10 are donated to Software Freedom Conservancy ! 👏

@nprofile…h7c4 Zerodha is pretty well known in FOSS circles in India. They also helped start https://fossunited.org/ which has an active community (5k+ members) where this was shared.

#Syncthing has this very cool upcoming feature now: Sync via untrusted devices, also known as "Buddy Backup".
This allows you and your friend to share storage capacity with each other while keeping your data encrypted. Even multiple untrusted devices can work with each other to ensure that your data gets synchronized to all trusted devices.

@nprofile…wyg9 There's even a N100 board with GPIO via RP2040: https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2024/radxa-x4-sbc-unites-intel-n100-and-raspberry-pi-rp2040
Only issue is N100 at that size tends to be poor at thermals handling.

@nprofile…gunj I do wish there was a way to easily buy used decent computers at low prices in India. Especially good machines like Thinkstation, Dell Precision etc. Do you know of some online portals for this that don't add a huge markup on these?

@nprofile…gunj So many reasons: GPIO, small size, ecosystem (hardware and software both).
CM5 (compute module) Dev Kit has both the things I want. Just want that to be the default Pi.

2024-12-02 08:31:40 UTC

If #RaspberryPi 5 came with a M.2 slot and a full-size HDMI port, I'd be shelling out my money faster than you could say "Pi". 😄 These 2 features wouldn't add a lot of cost either. Pi5 is almost the perfect little #Linux single-board-computer with many use-cases like NAS, Router, smart TV box! So close!

Good rant. Though my personal take is that there is no royal road to peace and calm. Entropy ensures that things becoming worse is the way of nature. Things becoming and staying good takes active effort.

Are you saying that modern cognitive scientists would understand "thinking" to also include taking real-world actions after deliberation?
AFAIK, the field of AI wanted to cover all 4 varieties of intelligence listed here:

Annoyed that while there's a word for "computing" - which led to "computer" when we managed to automate this skill, there's no single word for "thinking + doing". And so, we have to use the boring "agent".
I asked my #ChatGPT and it came up with a new one, that's quite funny if you speak Hindi. 😂

Gigabrain idea: Fork #bluesky client app (which is a single codebase for web and mobile) so that it fetches and shows #fediverse #Mastodon posts as well.
No bridging would be necessary. This would be like using single email client app to handle multiple inboxes.
Too wild?
