People believe the things they hear repeated around them by the people they know.
If all they hear is the lie, whether from the liar, the liar's minions or people repeating it to debunk it, they will believe it.
Go ahead and characterize, but do not quote or post video of the lies, EVER. It just cements the lie in the mind of the listener.
Say they lied and why, but leave their words unspoken. Always.

But, assuming above is implemented, isn't the IPO, whether cashed out or loaned against, what creates/created the lion's share of their wealth that would get taxed?
Certainly a steeply upward sliding scale of margin tax rates is needed as part and parcel of any taxation.
Sooner or later any kept private holdings have to be either sold or inherited and at that time taxed.
Private asset valuation is always a challenge, one of the reasons for needing more IRS auditors...

I intended "stock holdings" to mean publicly traded company shares; this is the primary, if not exclusive accelerator of wealth inequality & consolidation.
Even if other tangible assets were included, I believe the current inheritance tax exemption is $5M, $10M for married couples.
If your house, etc. is worth more than $5 or 10M, I'm not too worried about your ability to manage the tax on the appreciated value.
All on top of taxing borrowing against stock holdings.

Add to that eliminating the step up in basis for inherited stock holdings for estates subject to the federal inheritance tax and tax capital gains at the same rates as regular income.
Cutting in half the threshold for the inheritance tax to kick in would be good too.

There have been lots of smaller protests in cities across the country for weeks. Tomorrow is the first big push to get people in the streets on a single day. There are 3,500 or more events planned in cities towns and hamlets across the country.
It's impossible to say how many will show up, but I will not be surprised if it's in the one to two or three or four million in total.
Of course it's very hard to get accurate numbers so estimates will range widely.

Appropriation anyone?
And this document purporting to be about fighting antisemitism doesn’t mention people chanting "Jews will not replace us".
Maybe, just maybe they're lying.

Measles is so contagious that 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed will get it.
Remember R0 for COVID?
It was 1.4-2.4.
For measles it's 12-18.
Ian an unvaccinated group of people, ONE person with measles spreads the illness to 12-18 people on average.
The only way to protect people who cannot get vaccinated is for very close to everyone who can get vaccinated to get vaccinated.

We certainly shouldn't depend in any way on the legacy, for-profit media for any of this.
It's totally up to independent media and us to spread the word on what's going on.
There are lots of channels that have been created between the large Grassroots groups, there were 50k people on a joint Indivisible, Move On, Working Families Party call last Sunday night; various Substack authors, people like Heather Cox Richardson & Simon Rosenberg have many 1000s of subscribers, etc.

2) WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING?

A wave of labor actions might be more effective as that would directly impact on the lives of every day people.
In the meantime, calling our state & federal elected officials to tell them what we want them to do and to not do is something we can all do.

While it ought not be a shock to anyone, The Criminal has again brazenly broken the law.
His doing so in office is a blatantly impeachable offense. As such Articles of Impeachment should be introduced in the House first thing Monday morning.
The MAGA GOP run House will neither vote on nor pass them, but Democrats should put them on the table nonetheless and pass them on January 4, 2027.

No, not quoting here. It's to generate a code snippet to drop into an HTML page to display the toot as a linkable image in a web page.
This is what news websites use when they want to reference something of interest/import from a social media platform.
No embed code, no reference to Mastodon toots on left leaning news websites.
There's a whole lot of passive Mastodon marketing getting lost by the lack of this functionality.

2025-01-11 18:25:53 UTC

As I am not facile with github, does anyone know if there is a request logged to add an embed option to the drop down list of options for managing/sharing a toot?
Not being able to easily embed toots limits (eliminates?) the use of Mastodon as a source for stories on media websites like DailyKos.com.

I've started a very preliminary conversation with a progressive overtly political organization with a lot of prospective users focused on the risk of Bluesky becoming Twitter 2.0.
Maybe the risk is small, maybe it's large, but can progressive organizations afford even a small risk given the magnitude of the political ramifications if we face a similar situation in late 2027/early 2028?
We'll see how the conversation goes as I work my way up their management ladder.

Is it the structure of representative democracy that's the problem or the money required?
If there were true public financing, would that make a substantive difference?
Also, so long as there are countries in the world run by autocrats and kleptocrats completely disdainful of national borders and the rights of the residents of any country, we're going to need a national defense capability.
Whatever governance we have must be able to manage that.
