What about, instead of having the DM/GC feature in-house, Lemmy instead integrated a separate protocol like:
Matrix
XMPP
Delta Chat
Session
Briar
SimpleX
OMEMO (XMPP Extension)
etc.
And used *that* instead, for the DM/GC?
That way, Lemmy wouldn't have to donate resources to DM/GC, but users would still be able to message each other.
And not have to have two separate accounts on two different platforms.

2026-01-24 16:07:22 UTC

I was curious whether Lemmy has ever considered (or discussed) adding some form of group chat / group messaging functionality, to the already existing DM system.
One area where this could be *especially* useful is community mod-mail or instance admin-mail.
___
Right now, if a user wants to contact a community’s moderators (or instance admins), they generally have to message individuals one by one. A group chat or shared inbox system would allow:
Users to message all community moderators at once
Users to contact instance admins as a group
Mods/admins to see and respond collaboratively in a single thread
This would be similar in spirit to Reddit’s mod-mail system, but adapted to Lemmy’s federated model.
___
Potential benefits:
Easier and clearer communication for users
Less duplicated effort for mods/admins
Better moderation transparency and coordination
A single canonical place for moderation-related messages
From a user’s perspective, it would feel like contacting “the mods” as a single entity rather than guessing who to message
___
I’m curious:
Has this been discussed before?
Are there technical or federation-related reasons this might be difficult?
Would this be something better handled at the client level, or would it require core Lemmy support?
___
***EDIT:*** I would have posted this to the GitHub, but GitHub never works for me, no matter what GitHub account I use, so I just decided to post it here instead.

On Reddit, many subreddits have configurable requirements like minimum account age and karma before users are allowed to post or comment.
If a user doesn’t meet the criteria, they receive an automatic message like:
___
Your post/comment has been removed as your account does not meet the karma and/or age requirements of this sub.
Your account must be older than _____ days and have more than ________ combined karma to post here.
I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.
___
Do you think Lemmy should consider adding similar options for community moderators — such as requiring a minimum amount of local or federated karma, and/or minimum account age — before a user can post or comment in a community?
Would this help reduce spam or low-effort posts, or would it go against the spirit of open discussion that Lemmy encourages?

And yes, I know about Wednesday’s speech about the Native Americans in Addams Family Values.
This is a question that has recently formed in my head.
The Addams Family, given their iconic macabre gothic status, have celebrated several disasters in world history.
Examples include Nero fiddling while Rome burned, Waterloo, Jack the Ripper, the Salem Witch Trials.
However does the Addams Family celebrate any tragedy?
Or are there some tragedies which even they think are horrible?
For example, would they dance when Pearl Harbor was bombed, or when JFK was shot?
Simply put, are there tragedies that even the Addams Family would not celebrate?

Reddit allows users to mark their profiles as “mature (18+)” if they post or interact with NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content, such as nudity or adult discussions.
Users who want to view NSFW content must also toggle a setting confirming they’re over 18. This system attempts to shield minors from adult content but largely depends on self-reporting and setting toggles, without strict age verification.
Given Lemmy’s federated, privacy-conscious, and community-moderated nature:
Would a similar opt-in mature profile flag be beneficial for helping users and instances filter adult content more clearly?
Could it help preserve Lemmy’s openness while giving instance admins tools to better moderate or restrict adult material?
Or would it introduce unnecessary moderation complexity, violate privacy expectations, or fail for the same reasons Reddit’s system does (e.g., lack of real age verification)?
How might this look in Lemmy’s decentralized environment, and what implementation challenges would need to be addressed?
Would you like me to help format or cross-post this for another Lemmy community as well?

Is it just me, or has anyone else thought about the potential for a dedicated bot platform for the Fediverse?
Think of something similar to how Discord has two completely separate apps for managing Discord bots: Bots for Discord, and Bot Designer for Discord.
Users can find, customize, and run bots in Discord servers, all in one place.
Now imagine that, but tailored for the Fediverse.
What I’m envisioning is a platform/app where mods, admins, or individuals can create, browse, and easily deploy bots across different Fediverse platforms.
For example:
- A **Lemmy community** could add an Automod bot to enforce rules, a "Fact of the Day" bot to post fun trivia, or even **character bots** (e.g., Harry Potter/Albus Dumbledore/Voldemort/etc. bots for a Harry Potter community, or Link/Zelda for a gaming-themed community, etc.).
- A **Pixelfed bot** could automatically feature stunning images or run photo contests.
- A **Mastodon bot** could post breaking news updates or even serve as a Q&A bot for a popular hashtag.
- **Peertube bots** could promote trending videos or notify communities of shared uploads.
- A **Bookwyrm bot** could suggest popular books or create fun reading challenges.
- A bot for **Calendar-based events**, like reminding communities about upcoming holidays or events based on their interests.
- A bot for **gamified engagement**, such as awarding badges for engagement or posting interactive polls.
- A bot for **memes and humour**, generating community-specific memes using AI.
- A **translation bot** to help users bridge discussions across different languages in a multilingual community.
- A bot for **feeds**, pulling external data (e.g., weather, stock updates, or sports scores) into relevant communities.
- A **welcome bot** to greet new users and help them onboard into the community.
- etc.
It could work by letting mods/admins/users select which Fediverse platform they want to use the bot on (e.g., Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed, Peertube, etc.), choose their bot type, and tweak settings for functionality—all from one hub.
The potential for creative and engaging bots is huge, and it could genuinely enhance many Fediverse communities.
I’d honestly love to work on something like this, but unfortunately, I don’t have the time, energy, or knowledge to make it a reality.
So I wanted to toss the idea out here to see if anyone else has thought about something similar—or if this concept already exists and I’ve completely missed it.
What do you think?
Could something like this benefit the Fediverse and its various platforms?

Has anyone ever considered the potential creation of a Labeler similar to Andrew Lisowski's Bluesky Politician Labeler, but for the Mastodon platform?
This tool, which has been developed for Bluesky, provides valuable transparency by listing top contributors to US politicians.
The Bluesky Politician Labeler
(https://github.com/hipstersmoothie/us-gov-contributions-labeler)
is an innovative Open-Source feature that enhances political discourse on social media.
It automatically labels posts from US politicians with information about their top financial contributors, offering users immediate context about the potential influences on these public figures.
___
Key benefits of implementing a similar feature on Mastodon could include:
1. Increased transparency: Users would have easy access to information about political funding sources.
2. Enhanced political discourse: This feature could lead to more informed discussions about politics and campaign finance.
3. User empowerment: Mastodon users would be better equipped to critically evaluate political content.
4. Platform differentiation: This unique feature could set Mastodon apart from other social media platforms.
___
It could be designed to respect Mastodon's federated nature, possibly allowing instance administrators to opt-in or customize the feature for their communities.
Given Mastodon's focus on user privacy and data control, any implementation would need to be carefully considered to ensure it aligns with these core values.
The feature could potentially be developed as an optional plugin that users or instance administrators could choose to enable.
I personally believe that something like this could SIGNIFICANTLY enhance the political discourse on Mastodon while providing valuable transparency to users.
It would be an innovative addition that aligns with Mastodon's ethos of empowering users and fostering meaningful conversations.
I would consider doing something like this, but, unfortunately, I personally lack the time, energy, and technical knowledge.

I've been wondering if there's a decentralized, Fediverse-compatible alternative to Pinterest out there.
The idea of a federated platform for sharing and curating visual content, DIY ideas, and inspiration boards seems like it could be a great addition to the Fediverse ecosystem.
___
Some questions I have:
Does anyone know of an existing project that's similar to Pinterest but Fediverse-compatible?
If not, has anyone considered developing such a platform?
What challenges might be involved?
Perhaps it could be potentially created under the Pixelfed Banner, similar to Loops?
Would there be interest in the community for a Pinterest-like service on the Fediverse?
___
I personally believe that this could be an exciting project, but personally, I lack the technical knowledge, energy, and time to take it on myself.
However, I'd love to hear your thoughts and see if there's any traction for this idea.
If such a service doesn't exist yet, maybe this post could spark a discussion or inspire someone with the right skills to consider developing it.
What do you all think?
Is this something you'd be interested in using or contributing to?

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Lemmy should consider potentially renaming the "Karma" system to "Social Credit Score"?
This playful nod to the concept of social credit in China and other countries could serve as an ironic commentary on surveillance and governance, resonating with users familiar with global critiques of social credit systems.
____
**Reasoning:**
1. **Cultural Relevance:** This name change could spark discussions about social justice, governance, and global inequality while attracting attention to Lemmy's stance on leftist values.
2. **Humour:** It introduces a layer of satire that aligns with the platform's ethos, making interactions more engaging.
3. **Memorability:** A unique name like "Social Credit Score" could enhance brand identity, making the platform stand out in digital discussions.
____
Adopting "Social Credit Score" instead of "Karma" could add depth and humor to user interactions, reflecting Lemmy's political leanings while encouraging critical conversations.

Hey everyone,
I was curious on whether anyone has ever thought about potentially introducing a Fediverse equivalent to platforms like:
- Ko-fi
- Patreon
- Gumroad
- LiberaPay
- Buy Me a Coffee
- Web Monetization (e.g., Coil)
etc.
What I’m imagining is a **decentralized platform** that allows users across the Fediverse to **directly tip or support creators**, all without relying on plugins or third-party integrations.
For instance, I know that creators on platforms like PeerTube can add plugins for cryptocurrency or payment solutions, but these require additional configuration or technical know-how.
What I’m suggesting is a straightforward tipping platform built **directly** into the Fediverse ecosystem, one that doesn’t depend on plugins—just a seamless way to support creators on **ALL** Fediverse platforms.
__
To clarify upfront:
- **I am NOT a “crypto bro.”** I’m not here to promote any cryptocurrency or blockchain agenda—I’m just thinking about user-friendly, decentralized solutions.
- While I **AM** open-minded about crypto-based approaches, I feel there’s potential for a non-crypto, user-first Fediverse tipping system.
__
What do you all think?
- Has this idea been explored?
- Are there any projects in the works that aim to address this?
- Do you think it’s feasible or even a good fit for the Fediverse ethos?
__
I’d love to attempt something like this myself, but sadly I personally lack the time, technical knowledge, and energy to make it happen.
Still, I’d be really curious to hear the community’s thoughts.
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights.
