My high school days were a mixture of UNIX, DOS, and Windows 3.11.
I graduated the year Windows 95 released and didn't do much with it as I did a 2 years of religious service from 1996-1998.
When that was over, Windows 98 was the new hotness and really the first operating system I spent any serious amount of time in personally.

Windows XP SP 2 was the first rock-solid Windows version from Microsoft, coming from the constant crashes of Windows 98 and ME. It was a standout in operating system design.
It was also the last Windows version that was my daily driver. In 2004, I dropped it for Debian as my main OS and haven't missed it. I did need a Windows 10 VM for grad school but that was it.
Still, XP will always be nostalgic for me.

The latest ad by Firefox is a cringe fest. It's a rough 1 minute watch. It feels desperate, like Mozilla has done all they can do, yet still haven't convinced users why Firefox should be their daily driver.
I dropped Firefox long ago due to the poor performance on Android compared to Brave. I keep it installed though, and pull it up from time-to-time to see if anything has improved.

Modern #cryptography is secure because "lots of smart people have come up with really creative attacks".
But what if we've overlooked faster algorithms to factoring integers, solving discrete logarithms, etc.?
We assume our primitives are secure, because nothing obvious is sticking out.

That's the thing though, you can't do encrypted email securely. To start, all the headers are sent in plain text. On top of that, there is nothing stopping the recipient from replying in the clear, leaving the previous encrypted body, now decrypted. No modern cryptographic communication protocol would dream of doing this.

The problem with pass(1) is that it leaks metadata to the file system, if you follow one file per account:
$ pass edit infra/switch
$ pass edit personal/finances
$ pass edit laptop/luks
You end up with many files in ~/.password-store/ each showing account names in plain text.
Yes you can store arbitrary data in a single blob, but then you lose features like individual file Git history, per-entry recipients, and "pass -c", "find", and tab completion.

- It's not forward-secure.
- The Web of Trust is broken and impractical.

OP develops a running app where runners connect their GPS watch. Some of them have marathon results on file, of which is plotted here.
A couple observations:
- Volume is king. Faster marathon runners are running more weekly volume.
- Most of that volume is slower than marathon pace. I'm a 3:12 marathoner on ~110 kmpw (~70 mpw). My marathon time makes up about the same percentage of my week as the 3:00 runners here.

#Marathon training hot take: you shouldn't be #running 25-30 km (16-18 miles) at marathon pace.
In terms of injury risk, recovery time, sustainability, and effectiveness, 60-90 minutes steady followed by 50-60 minutes at marathon pace is the best bang for your buck by a long shot.
It's a quality long run that keeps you under the 3-hour injury risk where recovery demands rise sharply.
It also delivers a *solid* marathon-specific session while also building a strong aerobic base.

Yup! I'm 49 years old. VO2 max, MAS, strides, hill sprints, etc. come with very real injury risks and lengthy recoveries.
While on the other side of LT2, your 30k, HMP, 15k, and even 12k efforts get all the same adaptations, with significantly less injury risk and can be recovered from quickly.
This is the framework of Marius Bakken, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and other Norwegian athletes.
See https://norwegiansingles.run/ for more info.

2026-09-25 19:55:49 UTC

Here's a silly #running observation.
I'm a big fan of the Norwegian sub-threshold framework or training. My week is: easy, sub-t, easy, sub-t, easy, sub-t, long.
I get a lot of (harmless) flak from a friend who thinks I need to do more VO2 max track workouts. 200s, 400s, etc. at mile, 3k, or 5k pace.
I tell him "no", because injury risk is high and they're tougher to recover from. Sub-threshold intervals get me the same adaptations.
Whelp, my friend is injured. Again. Because track workouts.

Fun read about how the challenges were generated, available on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.
1. 30,000 bytes were generated with a HWRNG on a laptop.
2. Those bytes seeded the B_GenerateKeyPair function in RSA BSAFE.
3. The private key was discarded.
4. The public key was exported.
5. The moduli was extracted and converted to decimal.
6. The laptop hard drive was destroyed.

I got curious what the current rate is at factoring the RSA challenges.
Arjen Lenstra suggested a formula of (Year - 2000) × 32 + 512 (red) for predicting how factoring capability would grow, but it appears his projection was optimistic.
The current factoring rate (blue) shows a much slower progress of published academic factoring records.

There's discussion in r/math on Reddit that it was trial and error with pencil and paper.
I don't know how seriously to take that, but the source is Eric himself on replies to that tweet.

CERN is dropping #RHELL for #Debian. All 2200+ systems by the end of the year.
The reason being is that the "-march=x86-64-v2" compiler flag default as "forced obsolescence" for old hardware.
It's not without headaches, mostly due to "the lack of standard tooling for automated building and publishing of packages - a lot of gaps in the official tooling. There are also a number of tools not supporting multiple versions of the same packages."

Did a 7×6:00 @ 94-97% CP, off 90" workout this afternoon.
1. 95.3%, 4:27/km, 1347 m
2. 95.9%, 4:21/km, 1378 m
3. 97.5%, 4:28/km, 1349 m
4. 95.9%, 4;25/km, 1365 m
5. 96.2%, 4:21/km, 1375 m
6. 95.0%, 4:27/km, 1345 m
7. 95.0%, 4:22/km, 1376 m
Two years ago, I had a coach who wasn't all that interested meeting me halfway with my fitness. As such, I found myself fading a lot in this workout.
Since dumping him, I've improved immensely and consistency is on point.

Many chat tools on websites can see what you are typing in real-time before you hit enter.
The goal is for the customer service agent to preempt your questions and have answers ready in a more timely manner.
But this also comes with risks, such as those who copy/paste sensitive data into the chat interface and redact it before hitting <Enter>.
I'd advise typing your questions & responses in a text editor first, then copy/paste that into the chat when finalized.

My issue is internal capacity. As the battery height increases, the volume available for active material grows faster than the volume of the fixed structural components of the battery, increasing mAh/mm:
CR2016: 1.6 mm, 90 mAh ~= 56 mAh/mm
CR2025: 2.5 mm, 160 mAh ~= 64 mAh/mm
CR2032: 3.2 mm, 225 mAh ~= 70 mAh/mm
There is also cost. A 2-pack of CR2025 costs the same at my local store as a 2-pack of CR2032, which is just bonkers.

I've had my Polar H10 since 2020. I wish the straps were better (and cheaper), but I love my H10. It's been a great HRM.
But the fact that it uses a CR2025 battery has always kind of irked me. If the H12 is a thing, I hope it uses a CR2032 instead.

Added Swap-or-Not and Sometimes Recurse cryptographic PRFs as shuffles.
I did make a few tweaks to the algorithms to fit with the scope of the "fun with shuffling algorithms" project, but I stayed true to the academic papers for both.
Also broke the functions out into separate modular files for better portability.
Really liking the way this is turning out. I can only think of one more shuffle to add, and I think that'll wrap this up.

Here's a long run workout from Renato Canova that's specific to developing half marathon and full marathon capacity:
- Warmup 3 km 65-75% CP/FTP
- 2×3 km 90-95%, jog 1 km 60-70%
- 3×2 km 96-100%, jog 800 m 55-65%
- 5×1 km 102-107%, jog 400 m 50-60%
- 6×500 m 110-118%, jog 200 m 45-55%
- Cooldown 3 km 65-75%
That's 33 km total, 20 km of which is around threshold, either under or over. Estimated TSS is around 235. It's a beast of a workout.

Speaking strictly of favorites:
- I disable compression as I don't need it and it opens up potential vulnerabilities
- use sockets to share a single network connection for multiple sessions
- do not hash known_hosts as that's more trouble than it's worth
- print the visual host key ASCII art, because it's fun:
Host *
Compression no
ControlMaster auto
ControlPath ~/.ssh/sockets/%r%h%p
HostKnownHosts no
VisualHostKey yes

This really isn't all that surprising to me. To start, no one is stepping in and fixing bugs in the drivers. This includes the ARM manufacturers themselves.
ARM has a long sordid history of deserting hardware. Build it, ship it, abandon it. Found an ARM bug? Get new hardware.
So now you have abandoned ARM hardware with zero users for 20+ years.
Yeah, nuke it out of orbit.
To be clear, the drivers are marked deprecated; they're not being removed. Yet.
