Last Notes

We’re excited to announce that as of 158.0, #IronFox now officially supports Android TV (and Fire TV) devices!
We made the decision to add support for these devices as we believe it is desperately needed. There are currently very few browsers available for Android TV devices, and the vast majority of the ones that *are* currently available include ads/trackers and engage in other sketchy/questionable behavior. They also typically only offer basic functionality and lack a lot of important features users may expect.
So, in line with our mission, this decision now allows us to offer a fully-featured, private and secure web browser for TV users.
As we work to refine the TV experience, we expect there to be some quirks to address, so please report to us any bugs/issues you encounter!

on a real note, there is already an issue open to reduce/possibly remove the emojis: https://codeberg.org/celenity/Phoenix/issues/369
that being said, what an insanely petty reason to not link to/mention a project, that combined with your comment attacking librewolf makes it impossible to take your article seriously lol

i sincerely hope no one takes articles like this seriously and believes your nonsense, bait used to believable LOL 😭

This is more important now than ever.
Unfortunately, even Mozilla (@npub16pr…crsg) recently added the Google Play Integrity API to Firefox for Android (@npub1q6s…03km), as part of their effort to support generative AI features.
Hoping that someone at Mozilla sees this thread and reconsiders that decision, in order to reconcile with their mission statement/values.

For the next #IronFox release, we intend to remove built-in DNS over HTTPS providers that do not have their addresses signed with DNSSEC and/or do not enforce DNSSEC for domains that support it. We're making this change because we believe it's our responsibility to hold the default selection of providers to the highest possible standards, and due to the improvement in privacy and security that it will provide for users.
The following providers will be impacted:
- AdGuard
- AdGuard (Unfiltered)
- NextDNS
- Quad9
- Wikimedia
Unfortunately, as Quad9 is one of the providers impacted, we intend to switch the default provider for new users to Mullvad (Base).
If you are currently using any of the effected providers, your choice will be respected, and they will remain your selected DNS provider after updating, though we would strongly recommend switching to one of the other built-in providers if possible.
We wanted to share this announcement before release to make users aware and get feedback around this change. We look forward to hearing what the community thinks!

since the firefox ai runtime (/ml component) was implemented in gecko directly, you're right that it's technically present on android - but it's not actively being used/implemented anywhere in geckoview and fenix (firefox for android) itself - unlike firefox for desktop, which has been adding user-facing features like ai chatbot integration, link preview, smart tab grouping, etc. (with a separate "genai" component).
but, i took a look, and i will go ahead and disable `extensions.ml.enabled` for next release, thanks for pointing it out.
in general, i'm going to take a closer look into the ai runtime/ml component (that we're inheriting from gecko) for next release, and see what specifically we can disable/remove. i don't think we want to kill *all* local "machine learning" functionality (ex. firefox translations technically uses machine learning models - and we def want to support that), but we def don't won't support anything related to "generative" ai, like the examples i mentioned of firefox's recent features on desktop

RE: https://chaos.social/@librewolf/115716906957137196
This is also our position for #IronFox.
(Thankfully, Mozilla’s “generative AI” features haven’t really made their way to Android, so this hasn’t yet been an issue for us - but this is how we will proceed if/when they are introduced).

IronFox is for Android, while LibreWolf is for desktop. The privacy & security hardening of both is quite similar.
