There's still 9 I can't identify, and I doubt I will. 4 of them are ebonite pens I got years ago on ebay, made in India by small makers, no markings, with commodity german nibs. No receipts. Ebay doesn't remember, either.
A couple came from craft fairs. People with lathes.
A few, I had no idea about, even before the move, before I packed everything up.
This is all cheap stuff. It's not like I have a pile of mont blancs lying around. lol

I have ADHD and a generally bad memory, so I have a habit of buying things and forgetting I did. Compounded by having everything out of view, in a box, for ages.
Naturally I bought a few more fountain pens while the rest were still packed. Fortunately I didn't duplicate anything.
Finding a lot of stuff I didn't know I had, and a lot more stuff I couldn't even identify at first. I had to do a few hours of research last night to figure out what some of my pens are.

2026-10-19 20:06:36 UTC

I like fountain pens, but we moved, ten-ish years ago, and we packed away most of our stuff in boxes. What with one thing and another, living situations, etc., we didn't unpack our stuff until a few years ago when we moved into our own house.
And some of it didn't get unpacked until, like, this summer. Among that, nearly all of my pens. I kept my favorite few out all along, but in the intervening years I forgot what else I had.
Pen inventory time. Penventory.

#FountainPens
I seem to have about 50 or 60 fountain pens.
Most of them are inexpensive.
That's not counting the drawer full of about a dozen Pilot Preppys I just found, or all four of the Pilot Parallel set.
A surprising number have never been inked. ADHD. Sometimes I buy a thing and never try it. For exampfudeI have a Duke 209 with a fude nib. That's about a ten dollar pen. I've never used it. I'm sure I got it just because I was curious about fude nibs.

To be clear—this thread isn’t to get you to stop using library ebooks. The onus isn’t on you.
I have to use ebooks, if I want to read. I have problems reading regular books.
The point is that the situation, like so many others, is unsustainable. Private equity is looting the public. Libraries are no exception.
But the costs are at the front end. The library already paid Libby/overdrive, and you already paid your taxes. So go ahead. You have the right.
It’s KKR that doesn’t have the right.

2026-07-13 01:11:15 UTC

- reply

Incidentally this is why the library’s collection beyond current bestsellers and other high-circulation books will always be unavailable for circulation electronically, unless we come up with a less exploitative model to pay for it.

2026-07-13 01:09:12 UTC

- reply

Should you not use Libby? Go ahead. You already paid for it.
I just don’t use it frivolously. I try not to use Libby to borrow what I might not actually read/listen to/use. I try to make sure I have the time to read what I take out.
I use the preview feature.
The point is, the marginal cost to the library of an additional circulation of an ebook is significant, not trivial, up to (if the library decides not to renew the expensive license) loss of the ebook to other borrowers. So be mindful.

2026-07-13 00:58:40 UTC

- reply

Librarians, being good public servants, will tell you to borrow books without guilt. You’re a taxpayer, or the child of one, and library material is for you; in any case, the library can advocate for realistic budgets based on what the patrons actually use.
I think this is a kindly lie. Library budgets are shrinking, never increasing, and the opportunity cost of these huge ever-growing Libby contracts is severe. They’re strangling everything else the library might do.

2026-07-13 00:58:31 UTC

- reply

My kinda-sorta, back-of-the envelope number is that one borrowing of an ebook costs the library system on the order of five or ten times as much as one borrowing of the physical book.
A common contract for an ebook via Libby is a two-year rental that allows 26 circs, for—depending—something approaching a hundred bucks. That’s a few dollars per circ.
Hardback books cost about a third that much and circulate many more times. Probably tens of cents per circ or better.

2026-07-13 00:37:14 UTC

Public library ebooks are becoming a thing of the past.
Libby is bleeding the libraries to death, sucking tax money straight to private equity. (KKR owns it).
For that cost, you get very little, beyond hockey-playing-vampire romance novels and other dumb bestsellers.
If your experience with Libby is still good:
1) You live in one of the few remaining cities in the US with a well-funded library
2) It won’t last. Libby is a parasite that’s indifferent to its host’s long-term survival 🧵

I still don't think they should allow followup kicks on a penalty. You should get the initial shot, and that's it. Two bites at the apple seems exceessive, when you already have an 80% chance.
Though apparently England do not have an 80% chance. Everyone says that England do work on their penalties, but they're still lousy at them. The stress of the moment must be getting to them.

Thanks for checking in. But yeah the update is dead on arrival for me. I get a blank screen with the single exception of the little bug up in the corner that lets me access the account settings. I changed the UI/general/'use webclient home section arrangement' to negative, and this allowed 'next up' to show, but nothing else does. trying to play a next up instantly crashes it.

Wild.
There was, in my opinion, an obvious and egregious handball in the Germany v Spain semifinal at this summer’s Euros. Marc Cucurella blocked a shot from Jamal Musiala with his hand. There had been a diktat to refs that defender’s arms pointing downward and behind their torsos would be deemed “in a natural position.” On that basis the block was ruled not an offense. VAR agreed.
The UEFA Referee’s Committee has now decided this was wrong after all!

“Policide.” Okay, that’s straightforward enough. Has several meanings but prof Steven Smith uses it this way: “a systematic project to destroy an entire way of doing and understanding politics and governance.” Example: Chile under the Junta. Can also be “Politicide.”

2024-03-11 14:30:42 UTC

I wonder if there’s a word for the crime of killing the polity as a political body. The people might be left alive but their institutions, their very capacity to govern themselves even somewhat justly, have been destroyed
