A few pals and I were taking about Dolly at work today. My friend recounted when he’d gone to see Ozzy Osborn’s final show. At one point Dolly comes on the big screen to congratulate Ozzy on his career and to wish him a great final show. The whole audience of metal-heads went quiet to hear her out. You’d have to look long and hard, and far and wide, to find a person that doesn’t love Dolly Parton and even further to find a soul half as beautiful.

Good morning! Today we’re excited to introduce a new thing we’ve been working on for years. This. Is Liquid Values. See how it fluidly moves between one set of deep convictions to another while maintaining a consistency of presentation and verbiage? Liquid Values is an industry first that can support both fighting democratic governments tooth and nail while cowtowing to, working with, and supporting autocracies. All this while staying true to our core: shareholder value.
We think you’ll love it.

Things that I love as a long time fan of AppKit:
NSButton now sits atop a SwiftUI Button.
I’m sure that’s not in all configurations and there’s probably a bunch of fallbacks they had to deal with but to me that’s a triumph. Let’s say it started with OpenStep—that was thirty years ago!
There’s a magic to something like AppKit where you can reseat it atop changing technology and it keeps on ticking. Ever onwards!

I think it’s important to recognize that international relationships are not built between leaders but between people. The trust isn’t in the current leader, though they can help make or break the case, but in the electorate behind the leader. This, by the way, is why dictators have a difficult time making deals. Whims aren’t policy.
You’ll see articles about what these tariffs will cost Americans or Canadians.
The true cost is trust. A hundred years of trust has been squandered by you lot.

@nprofile…md38 You can certainly make a fixed width NSPopUpButton. In fact I think it was difficult to not do that in the past. I meant I believe they want the Picker to size to content, like labels and other buttons, so it is behaving as designed. Like you, I’d prefer a fixed size popup button as that is more idiomatic for the Mac. IdioMac-tic. You can have that gem of wordplay.

2024-12-27 03:39:52 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…md38 Maybe an alignment guide would help here? I think the Picker is doing the “right” thing in that it is sizing to fit the selected content. (I actually recall this being a pain to implement for inline style controls with AppKit) If you want a fixed positioning for your fields and a fixed width for your units then I think an alignment guide at the split point may be the way to go. (And, I agree this would be a better user experience for people accustomed to the mouse and macOS)

@nprofile…hrkg @nprofile…gftj Not really. And it’s not really their responsibility. After all a multi-trillion dollar company disrupting news is also not a great situation. I do like the service and, like John, consult it daily. And I do believe there’s a social value to widely available high quality news that isn’t beholden to ads. Mostly, I get why people are upset and I’d like Apple to foot the bill. But it’s easy to spend Tim’s money.

2024-11-21 02:00:05 UTC

Regarding Apple having ads in News is:
First: I agree with @nprofile…gftj that “The economics for ad-free news just don’t work, and never have.”
Second: Apple at least claims to operate with one bottom line where units don’t carry their own profit and loss. So I find the first claim incongruous with that.
Most importantly: We, globally but specifically in western democracies, are at a deficit of trustable news sources unbeholden to advertising money that inevitably colours their editorial choices.

So while these EU decisions seem to be largely anti-big-tech I think there’s an angle here worth considering: the EU worries about putting all of their tech eggs, and those of their citizens, in the increasingly dicey looking American basket. Nobody is sure what this next US election will bring and that uncertainty is exactly what is troubling. It doesn’t help that a US company just accidentally proved how disruptive to infrastructure a single point of failure can be.

I hadn’t heard of Windows Filesystem Tunnelling until yesterday. I was happier then. This idea is bananas. You can delete a file and make a new file with the same name (within 15s by default) and the NEW file will adopt the creation date of the DELETED file. This stuffs user logic into the filesystem layer to make atomic save operations work without changing user code. Horrible wild idea.
