Coxhoe trail run on a cool sunny Sunday morning, no official time yet but close to last year's and under my 50min target. No real training this year but generally felt good on the perfect conditions. I had to walk just after the first bank in the plantation to get my heart rate under control but pretty happy overall. Next year I go up and age category and plan to train for this as it's also a solid base for heads training.

Sunday long run with Coxhoe on the run, another cracking morning, cool, still and sunny. The route around Garmondsway quarry and the windmills (wind turbines) on the hill near Trimdon, mostly trail with a cut along the road at the top. I drove to the start to avoid too much on my foot but it seems fine. Last run before our holiday, it still looks too hot and humid for much running.

Tuesday run around Durham, all the bridges once the back up South Street in an effort to do something worse than go to work this morning. A lovely morning although the dark is starting to be noticeable setting out, not long until the boat lights and head torches come out.

Sunday long run with Coxhoe on the run, this morning the plan was run to Sedgefield and bus back but some of the group decided to run back via Trimdon. I joined them although my legs are questioning that choice at the moment. The hills heading up to Trimdon were hard work. The last 4km involved some walking as my knees were grumbling as they should this being my longest run. Warm with a few showers.

Sunday with Coxhoe on the run, mostly easy until the group split at quarington hill to shorten the route for someone suffering from some hip pain. A few of us kept the longer route picking up the pace down cold knuckle quarry track, back to old heugh hall and the track back to patkhill. We came together back at the white gate that marks the old Coxhoe railway crossing, perfect timing. Absolutely perfect conditions, cool air, dry and sunny although a good half of the rum was in the shade.
Coffee at the lamplight before heading home for a slice of the coffee and walnut cake my son baked yesterday.

Durham city 10km on a warm evening, pretty happy with 47:19 chip time, the hills seem just a little tougher every year but they are a great way to stretch out the field in the first 3km then finish us off in the last 1.5km with the run up to the cathedral.

ok I think. I'm actually wondering if the new shoes might be to blame. Puma went full on with the Nitro foam and they are very squishy, I think my gait might be impacted as I feel down on my heels. Always hard to separate cause and effect though. No running tomorrow. No cake tonight either, pie and a ginger biscuit though!

Back from Aberdeen, no Coxhoe run tonight so headed out myself for a loop around quarrington hill and down Kellie way. Cut short in Coxhoe due to some knee grumbling. Warm and muggy with a few rain drops.

Wednesday night out with Coxhoe on the run, a warm one and the first since last week. We were down in Sheffield at the weekend and it was a bit warmer than here so I missed my Sunday run. This weekend it's Aberdeen for my daughter's graduation on Monday.

Wednesday evening out with Coxhoe on the run. A lovely cool but sunny evening, keeping it short and avoiding mud as planned although i tacked on 3km running from home. Finished with pie and peas in the village tavern, potato and cheese for us vegetarians, local steak pies from the butcher in Coxhoe for the meat eaters. With a decent Guinness and good company.

I'm never sure what came first, our low wage economy or businesses poorly focused on maximizing value and efficiency. The minimum wage at least should highlight again our relatively poor productivity. Although it also creates a few problems for businesses that aren't able to see or take steps to increase value by collapsing any differential across wages in the business. Embarrassingly our last round of wage increases were driven by the changes in the minimum wage, tweaking those who ended up just above it to maintain some differential for skill and experience and leaving very little beyond that.

just annoyed. The student that the dog ran at first looked terrified initially. I've no issues with controlled dogs but my son was very afraid of dogs growing up so I tend to react badly to poor dog owners (sweary, Scottish and sweaty).

Tuesday Tempo repeat around the Wear in Durham. Cool clear and sunny with a river filling up with college boats. One crew were having the procedure for starting at the regatta explained to them. It's a whole four days away, plenty of time to practice. A beautiful run with only an altercation with an uncontrolled dog and his oblivious owner creating a bit of unnecessary stress. #running #runnersofmastodon

Sunday blustery long run with Coxhoe on the run. Ferryhill rail crossing reverse, cold win but sunshine. A nice steady run. A few grumbles from my knee on the run home (bonus 3km) which I'm tempted to put down to my running shoes. Some experiments this week. Stopped off at the lamplight for a coffee and to celebrate a 70th.

Sunday long run with Coxhoe on the run, not pacey but a good crowd with a few new faces. Mostly bright sunshine although the end of storm Dave left some bitter winds and even a hail shower thankfully at the farm behind old Warrington where we could shelter in a tin shed for the worst of it. all intact although warmer than last year the wind did make the beach section bitterly cold. Gloves and hat.

Druridge half marathon on a cool windy day.
I went off too hard along the beach and paid for it from mile 8, mile 10 onwards was no fun but I got it done. I forgot to end the activity on my watch until after medal and coffee collection (thanks to a lovely CotR runner who has completed the 10k). Having a couple of people cheering me on the last 409m made all the difference.

A bright sunny but cold morning, just a hint of frost but muddy in places. I made a sandwich out of the parkrun with 4km down and 5km back up. If they reversed the course it would be appreciated. Second day running and definitely feeling a few grumbles around my knees, most likely down to using muscles to stabilise myself running on mud yesterday. A cool lovely morning run with Coxhoe on the run ending in the lamplight for coffee. I forgot to start my watch so missing about 1km.

I skipped my Tuesday run due to back pain, I suspect a few too many km on Sunday. It was getting no better so I opted for an easy run with Coxhoe on the run. So far so good with no discomfort while running or after careful stretching. The morning will tell. A beautiful evening, warm and sunny but a cool breeze on exposed paths. Great company as always.
After a poor week at work with vague threats if I don't do more hours and push my team more it was needed. Our owner is failing to understand Scottish and particularly Dundonian culture. Bribery or guilt may work, threats just bring out the nose shears.
All this after an almost corporate mental health week email on Monday.
It will get better or I'll run further!

Cycled in to work this morning then back to the garage to pick up the car. The distance 1666m tells the story or at least the 666m I came off on the sand and gravel on the back road up towards old Durham garden. Just bruised and scraped but a reminder it only takes a moment of distraction plus road tyres on gravel.
I finished off the climb and made it to the garage. Tomorrow I think I'll drive.

No car so a run to Coxhoe for the Wednesday night easy run looping back home after a route around the edge of the hills. One path through a field with cows which I honestly prefer to avoid. Cool and grey, tomorrow looks better with a bike commute to work followed by a route back to the garage after work to collect my car. Intermittent electrical fault is still puzzling the engineer. #runnersofmastodon #running

Coxhoe is a village just off the A1 not far South of Durham. Pronounced Coxa around here much like Prudhoe is prudder further north. One of the run together groups is based there although the membership comes from quite a large area.
I row with DARC (Durham Amateur Rowing Club) although there is no longer any professional rowing club in Durham. We are the only public rowing club in Durham, although we share a short section of river with two schools, more than a dozen University colleges and Durham University boat club.

Muddy roads pie and peas trail run around the Trimdons. Despite a tangle with a tree and some ankle stressing rutted field edges it was great fun. A big turnout from Coxhoe on the run along with many local running groups and the odd local YouTube running community celeb. I caught up with an ex colleague who is busy putting together monopiles at Tees port which sounds quite a challenge. A lovely evening topped with a vegan pie and mushy peas. #runnersofmastodon #running

Back in the dark but just barely and not for long. Glorious dawn this morning, loads of birdsong, cool dry air. A little tired after a late pickup from the airport but worth the effort. Trying to go easy as tomorrow so none of my normal Tuesday tempo or pace running as it is the pie and peas 5k at Trimdon tomorrow night. I covered a chunk of last year's 10k course but I'm not sure if it will be the same this year.

one of the major advantages of rowing is facing away from the direction of travel. At least you were eating the flies, my legs are still recovering from horse flies.

Unexpected PB at an unplanned #parkrun this morning. One of our crew dropped out with the lurgy so we spent some time on boat maintenance and polishing finishing in time for the Parkrun start.
I've still got a head cold lingering and my legs are feeling heavy and sore from Wednesday so wasn't expecting much more than a steady run. I started pretty well, struggled around the fields and on the river path but finished strong with a Strava 5k Time of 21:31 the official time is normally marginally less. #running #runnersofmastodon

Feeling a little grim this morning. My wife has been ill all weekend and I thought i may have picked up her bug. I headed out for a little run, 10k later felt great. Sunshine, birdsong and cool morning air. The feeling will probably wear off in an hour or so.😄

Durham #parkrun this morning as we are still missing a crewman. A beautiful sunny morning with temperatures around 8-10 degrees. The path around the sports fields was still muddy and I felt like I'd done more work than normal by the time I got back onto the path. Very happy with an official time of 22:29 on my 25th Parkrun. Unfortunately as much as I love parkrun, it always takes second position to rowing on a Saturday morning. Late posting this as we headed up to Tynemouth to enjoy the sun and the market.

They also do beer although it was maybe a little early.

Sunday easy #running with Coxhoe on run, followed by coffee and cake before running home. Started cool but still so still that it soon warmed up. A little sunshine by the end.
Great chat and run encouraging another runner along their way to a half in the near future. I've still not planned anything beyond the pie and peas 5k in April. Holidays to sort first. #runnersofmastodon

Orban always had the advantage of Hungary being a little isolated linguistically. He could say one thing to his home audience through media he largely controlled and show a different face internationally. I always assumed this would be difficult to replicate internationally but unfortunately as we've sorted ourselves into different realities it looks like his pattern works.
I was living in Hungary when Orban came to power in 2010.

Sunday Druridge bay trail run. Advertised as a half but Strava thinks otherwise. A lovely run in mostly great conditions. It started cool with a light breeze but sunny along the first beach section. By the time we were back on the beach the wind was up and the sun had gone but the views of the sea carried me along. Chip time 1:50:07 which I'm really pretty happy with.
There was a group of runners from Coxhoe and it was a lovely mix along the run. Hanging around at the end gave me a severe case of jacket envy.
That's my first half, apart from the cold and cramp in my feet and lower legs it was good, not sure about going any further though.
I stopped off in Whitley Bay to catch up with a friend and get some lunch. The weather is now officially normal (grey, wet, cool) so at least we were spared that.

my wife volunteers in a cafe that is focussed on using/ reducing waste food. The biggest challenge is gluts and frankly weird collections of food that just don't fit into the distribution models of food banks. Everything from tens of kg of high quality confectionery chocolate, sushi rice, pallets of sports bars, boxes of strangely coloured jams. They even receive tinned beans back from the food banks because they get too many.
It's a hard stream to build a diet around.

Last run of 2024 and a familiar loop down through the woods and along the Wear to Shincliffe. Warm but very windy in places the flat felt like hills. Also raining a little but not enough to be really miserable. Some exercises the goal pace repeats to end the year.
Wishing everyone in the mastodon #RunningCommunity all the best for 2025. Your runs, stories and cheers make this social media like no other.

Friday morning run. The annual Pete King 10k around Coxhoe. I think Pete was responsible for the Coxhoe trail route. Today's run was more social with drinks and biscuits at the Active life centre in Coxhoe after. Cool damp and misty but no rain and less mud than expected. A grand way to spend the morning.

Saturday #parkrun wet and a little windy although I think we were lucky and it was done before the storm moved in. A PB for the course at 22:37. My first 1km was a little too fast and I lost pace on the second before settling in for the remainder managing to reduce my splits to the end.
The c25k Coxhoe on the run runners smashed it. #runnersofmastodon #running

As predicted too much water for rowing in the dark this morning so I ran Tuesday's speed repeats and hopefully we can get out in the boat tomorrow. Dark but not cold and although still a few wet and muddy patches it was pretty good underfoot. Unscheduled return to the club after warming up for reasons the 6x800m with 3min recovery along the Wear and back. #runnersofmastodon #running

Another Wednesday night easy run with Coxhoe on the run. Very cold but just enough pace to stay comfortable but not so much we couldn't talk. Day off tomorrow and I'm swapping a water session for a run on Friday. Another run that I really needed after a weird and tough day at work. Not our normal set of problems, just further reminders of mortality.

first in that age category but no prizes other than soup. I think the mud caught a few people out despite the warnings. I had trail shoes on which helped up until they filled up with mud. Great fun.

Thursday #sculling on the Wear. Simple session rehearsing our race plan for Saturday. We missed entry in the LDS due to some miscommunication but are racing in the small boats head. Same course just a bit later in the day. A few lessons learned from this morning, a change in our build and finish along with some course tweaks. Also don't run a 5km trail run the evening before a head race (first M50!). #rowing #rowersofmastodon

Wednesday easy #running with Coxhoe on the run. Out in the dark, mostly on paths which was lovely with heads and body torches. Starting to cool down now, another few weeks and we will need gloves. Tomorrow should be boat loading for South Hylton on Saturday. It's tidal so the start time is tied to the tide turning so boating around 11:40. #runnersofmastodon

I love the approach. Not everyone responds and respecting that is important but I've found it's a great way to feel part of a community. I now run with a "run together" group a couple of times a week and have found the community great. It's stopped my habit of treating even easy miles as a race. It's an England athletics organisation unfortunately not as big as parkrun but such a simple idea. Running community for those not willing or able to commit to a club.

Last run on Sanday, tomorrow morning we head back to the mainland Orkney. The plan was an easy run although easy along Cata sands and back along the sands along Newark bay was pretty hard work. Glorious day, sunshine breaking through and the temperature rising to around 18 degrees. I ran out to cairn on the tip of Tres Ness going off the path to avoid the wee loch. Back around 5000 years in a bit under 5km. A couple of seals off the coast, couldn't ask for more.

Another evening #running easy with Coxhoe on the run. A little flatter than last week out to Garmondsway Village and back along the old railway. I took a tumble on the way back but no damage done other than some minor scrapes.
Sunshine but a cool breeze made for great conditions. An interesting mix of runners from casual to some training for halfs and marathons and beyond. #runnersofmastodon
