One week later, Pele is already in dozens of apps including #Obsidian 1.15!
This week I added math support (via KaTeX, MathJax, Temml, etc), gradients in sankey diagrams, and more.
On a personal note, I am so grateful for all the love Pele received! I truly did not expect it.
My hope was to get a few bug reports ahead of the Obsidian release. It's wonderful to see it adopted. I take this as a great responsibility.
If you added Pele to your app or website feel free to share it below 🌋

This is Pele, my new rendering library for diagrams and charts, compatible with the latest Mermaid syntax.
- 100-500× faster than mermaid.js
- 6× smaller bundle
- No dependencies
- Easy to theme
- Responsive to device width
In pursuit of making #Obsidian insanely fast and cohesively designed, I always found the Mermaid library to be too big, too slow, and too hard to theme. Pele will be the new renderer in the next version of Obsidian, but you can start using it now!

formats evolve over decades, apps over months, intelligence is evolving every day
in terms of pace layers "file over app" defines priorities: invest deeply in proven formats, and don't expect anything at the intelligence layer to last very long

The most exciting thing for me is that I can finally get back to making #Obsidian plugins. I too was daunted by waiting in the review queue 😅
Now you can get a plugin into Obsidian within 24 hours.

I can't go back to the regular YouTube UI after this 😅
Obsidian Reader now makes the transcript interactive so you can scrub, highlight, auto-scroll. It feels so nice.

New in #Obsidian Reader:
- Themes and typography settings
- Highlighting
- Save options
Also added a beautiful new reading experience for deeply nested comments on Reddit and Hacker News.
Available with Obsidian Web Clipper 1.3 on all browsers.

I have been working on #Obsidian Reader for over a year. I didn't want to share it until I felt it was good enough. It's finally there.
Consistent formatting for any article. Outline, syntax highlighting, nice footnotes, adjustable typography.
Runs locally. Just rules, no AI.

Defuddle now has a website!
This means you can use Defuddle anywhere to get the main content of a page in Markdown format.
You can simply add "defuddle.md" before any URL, use it via curl, Skills, CLI, or add it to your app via NPM.

If you're enjoying #Obsidian 1.11 consider giving us a review on the App Store or Google Play.
As a small team you have no idea how much motivation it gives us to keep improving the app 🥰

2025-12-26 13:15:41 UTC

What do I mean when I say everything in #Obsidian should feel instantaneous?
No more than 0.1 seconds.
The target was established in 1968 by Robert Miller and well described in 1993 by Jakob Nielsen here:
https://files.mastodon.social/media_attachments/files/115/786/051/487/717/681/original/993aaa52a4e1b53e.jpeg

2025-12-25 02:38:35 UTC

Performance is design, and every millisecond counts.
Every update in 2025 trimmed Obsidian's load speed. This is quite complex given the number of different configurations and operating systems Obsidian supports.
We employed many different solutions to speed up Obsidian across various syncing methods, operating systems, plugins, vault sizes, etc.
Getting into Obsidian should be instantaneous regardless of vault size. It's absolutely necessary so that ideas can flow without friction.

Flexoki 2.0 introduces 88 new colors that feel like watercolor pigments on paper. This is a continuation of my attempt to bring the feeling of analog color to digital emissive screens.

@nprofile…ca53 What are you referencing? So far beta testers have been positive about it. I have seen a couple security-related questions come up but they are ones we had already thought about, and went through an external audit to validate.
Obsidian has been based on a web rendering engine since the start, so web viewer just makes it easier to use a capability that's always been in the app.

if your data is stored in a database that a company can freely read and access (i.e. not end-to-end encrypted), the company will eventually update their ToS so they can use your data for AI training — the incentives are too strong to resist
