Trump is going to Camp David with military leadership. This will end in him using the military against the population. Today or the next couple of days. Starting in California.
You can’t unring this bell.
This is the last moment the US military has to refuse.

10/ Toyota Production System (/Lean) is extremely understandable to programmers BECAUSE IT IS A PROGRAM.
It’s a program being executed by a combination of humans and machines in an actual physical factory. But as a program it’s very basic. It’s not very complex or interesting in the field of software engineering. Which is understandable because it’s not being run on a computer.

9/ People are clearly not getting my point… I’m clearly struggling to convey it properly. Clearly.
Yes! It’s recognizable! It’s a very common architecture!
It’s everywhere!
But it’s In Our Programs!
We use it all the time!
Unix pipes is an example (though we usually don’t write that complicated Unix pipelines).
Java steams, functional programming… it’s absolutely everywhere.
In our programs.

8/ We misunderstood/misapplied it, and it’s been going on for over a decade. Tbh (which would be a whole blogpost) this architecture (the factory) occurs all over software programs. I could list dozens examples off hand (I have listed a bunch already). It’s largely not interesting to software development as a field. It’s very well understood.
We’ve written software with this kind of architecture for probably at least half a century.

2025-05-27 14:54:36 UTC

7/ Since people are already misunderstanding me: «the factory» is a kind of software architecture you see in a bunch of different software, for example audio mixers, video editing, GUI composition etc etc.
It’s literally a kind of software architecture. Not super common, but not uncommon either. For example in video players or games you will see this architecture often. A very concrete manifestation is triple bufring in rendering.

6/ This whole thread is also relevant to the question: will AI take my programming job?

2025-05-27 13:35:15 UTC

5/ I sometimes compare it to trying to make a garden, it's never done, but it's still here, some years it's better than others and some years it actually might get worse.
My point is that your mental model for "what making software is" is extremely important when trying to figure out how to "manage" it.

2025-05-27 13:34:51 UTC

- reply

4/ So this is more like making a bespoke suit for someone. You need to try to get them to tell you what they want, you can try to show them different things they might not be familiar with, and most of the time they probably don't know what they want. So the process of making good software is about trying to find out what people want, even when they don't know themselves. That is a lot of trying stuff, a lot of interaction, a lot of back and forth. And that's not bad, that is actually optimal. The point is not to make a suit, the point is to make a suit that they will love.
The manufacturing perspective just doesn't fit: we have no material cost (copies are free), we have no labour cost for manufacturing (copies are free), we don't need a factory (copies can be made on a laptop). This is a very different thing than manufacturing, even designing for manufacturing, because you can design a bridge, but building the bridge still costs money. And so does the next bridge from that same design. That's not software.
Another weird thing about software is that we can fundamentally change it after it's "done". Even after the customer has it. We can continue to change it, for decades and decades.

2025-05-27 13:34:26 UTC

- reply

3/ I really do recommend going back to the primary sources from Toyota. Because software dev has a weird attribute, making 1 app locally on your machine that you deploy locally to your phone as a hobby, can take days/months/years. But once it is "done" you can put it in an app store or online, and all subsequent copies are "free to produce". This is not common in manufacturing. Making item 2 and 3 has cost, in materials and labour. But in software all of, or the overwhelming amount of, cost is in making the first one.
So the perspective is wrong. Developers don't produce code. Developers are trying to design a solution, and that is not done in isolation and more isn't necessarily more.
Like imagine you like a minimalistic style, putting more and more stuff into your house doesn't make it better, it makes it worse.
The goal isn't to write code faster, it's to make something that is valuable to someone.

2025-05-27 13:32:58 UTC

2/ If you look at modern software development it is, to me, obvious what the factory is an example of: It's a CI/CD pipeline, it's basically DevOps tooling and monitoring. A similar architecture exists for other computer programs that do this type of process: take various pieces of stuff and compose them together. You'll see that architecture in audio and video processing/mixing software, a well known OSS example is ffmpeg. But you also see it in operating systems for example in composers like Wayland or X11.
Basically: there are no actual people in the factory in software development. Lean Software dev is a massive misunderstanding and so is by extension Kanban etc
I should really write a blogpost or something on this.
But if you read Toyota Way you will see something that looks a lot like software dev, but it's not very prominent: it's the people designing the factories and the people designing the cars.

2025-05-27 13:31:56 UTC

1/ An unfortunate management student put a quarter in me in my DMs so I might as well put it in public:
Why Lean Software Dev is Wrong.
I think a big misunderstanding has been to think of software development as manufacturing. That also goes to my gripe with how Lean was translated to software development, which I think made this same mistake. I would need a whole thing on that as well (I'm assuming you read my thing on Team Topologies, which was basically to say that it was wrong in way too many words). So before buying into Lean Software dev and Kanban, I would actually go back and read for example Toyota Way, which I found super interesting when I read it (it's been a few years).
Mapping Lean to other disciplines starts with trying to figure out "what is the factory?" and "who are the workers in the factory?" And this is where it's very easy to miss and Lean software dev missed completely imo.

I’ve been thinking and I think what has me frustrated is the so called “bystander effect”.
“The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is for any one of them to provide help to a person in distress.”
https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/basics/bystander-effect
Basically we look around to see if anyone else is reacting, and if we don’t see anyone reacting then we assume that it isn’t an emergency. The problem is everyone is doing this. Everyone is looking to other people to check if they should react. So nobody reacts.

This is probably among the scariest things happening right now:
The Wall Street Journal: “The Trump transition team is considering a draft executive order that establishes a “warrior board” of retired senior military personnel with the power to review three- and four-star officers and to recommend removals of any deemed unfit for leadership.
If Donald Trump approves the order, it could fast-track the removal of generals and admirals found to be “lacking in requisite leadership qualities,” according to a draft of the order reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. But it could also create a chilling effect on top military officers, given the president-elect’s past vow to fire “woke generals,” referring to officers seen as promoting diversity in the ranks at the expense of military readiness.”

Just a PSA, I grew up in what in Norway would be considered a quite Christian family, but in US terms would be light years away from what is considered “Christianity”. But this upbringing has made me allergic to people demanding that I forgive others.
First of all: that is none of your business, real forgiveness is deeply personal.
Secondly: no one has the right to demand forgiveness.
Thirdly: no one is required to forgive anyone.
Lastly: you cannot forgive someone who does not acknowledge or regret the harm they have caused. That’s just playing with words. You can choose not to be angry, maybe you can forget, but imo forgiveness requires that the person that did you wrong to not only acknowledge that they did, but also regret that they did. AND EVEN THEN YOU DONT HAVE TO FORGIVE THEM. And that’s fine, you didn’t do the thing, that’s on them, this whole sequence of events is on them.
And if there is a god, and she takes offense, she and I can discuss that in private when I’m dead.

2024-11-12 13:56:27 UTC

I feel like we’re not even done with pronouns, but I guess we need to do adjectives.
Consider the following:
“I hate ugly cars”
What does this imply and not imply?
1. it does NOT imply that I hate cars in general
2. actually, by tacking on the adjective “ugly” I’m actually implying that there ARE cars that I don’t hate, otherwise I wouldn’t have needed to specify “ugly”. I could just say “I hate cars”
3. It also implies that there are cars that are NOT “ugly”, because if there weren’t, I also wouldn’t need the adjective. The “ugliness” would be an intrinsic part of cars in general.
So by saying “I hate ugly cars” I am implying that there are cars I don’t think are ugly AND that there are cars I don’t hate.
Good so far?
Ok. You ready?

The Democratic Party is currently enthusiastically handing power over to what will probably the most dangerous administration the US has ever seen.
I am only now realizing how much white progressives have failed black America. How much it has been about making white progressives feel good about being Good People. And how little has been done to actually dismantle oppression. How they love the language of “the left”, but when it actually comes down to action they reenforce the system that profits from the thinly veiled slavery machine they’ve always had.
And now it’s too late.

2024-11-11 14:14:46 UTC

Black Americans have been trying to talk about US prisons in the framework of legalized slavery for decades, and nothing has been done. They have spoken about the over-policing of black people as a pipeline to that legalized slavery. They have also spoken about the systematic disenfranchisement of especially black men by this process. They have spoken about the financial incentives of this whole sector.
And since hardly anything has been done, by either party, to address this, the US already has in place the legal framework and physical infrastructure for what has the potential to be the most efficient and profitable genocide in generations.
It seems to me that the progressive side of white America never fully understood what “defund the police”, “police abolition”, “prison reform”, “bail reform” or “black lives matter” were fundamentally about. And now I’m afraid it’s too late.

I’ve been listening to white women who are ex-MAGA talking about how they heard the misogyny but it just passed in one ear and out the other because they’d heard it all their lives. They didn’t actually think they meant it.
I’ve heard from pollsters who have retold interviews with undocumented immigrants who said they would’ve voted for Trump because he’d deport “the bad ones”.

What people like to put in the bag they like to deridingly label “identity politics” or “political correctness” or “woke” are the things where their own biases feel challenged. Which means you can have a TERF using it, but never meaning to reject women’s rights or a white gay guy who’s racist but thinks gay marriage is obvious. “The Other” is never me.
So a fascist movement that doesn’t need to define its terms, that can run on ✨vibes✨, can attract anyone. Anyone who feels that some Other is uncomfortable or scary.

You live in a context where certain things are “normal” now, but to completely erase that those things were vilified, even in your own lifetime, is a huge blind spot.
It gives you the illusion that you instinctively will “feel it” if it’s right. That you have some magical ability to rise above the prejudices of the day. This illusion then means you can pretend that you would’ve been on the right side of history at every turn. But odds are you wouldn’t. Odds are few of us would.
A Norwegian proverb goes «Du er deg selv nærmest» a translation of which could be: “You identify most with yourself”.
You might’ve been on the right side of things that affected you, but don’t be so sure about anything else.

It’s really frustrating to hear folks say “gay rights is obvious but trans rights is not” because it’s completely without root in history, and quite recent history. The majority of the population were very comfortable with letting large parts of a whole generation of gay men die of ADIS. The Democratic Party, in my view, has been fundamentally against gay equality until very recently.
The people who say they are pro gay rights, but against trans rights would 100% have been against gay rights then. (With the possible exception of gay transphobes, who got theirs and are frantically pulling up the ladder after themselves)

Saw a YouTube short asking Kamala voters if they would date a Trump voter, and all the women go:
Eh, no. This is a person who has literally voted to put me at risk.
One white guy: sure! We need to tolerate that people have different opinions.
That right there.
Harm that doesn’t happen to you.
You can tolerate it because it doesn’t happen to you.

And here I wasn’t thinking of you as an individual, I’m thinking of you as a builder and maintainer of systems. We often collect information we don’t need. We don’t need to track if a person is trans, we don’t need to track when a customer buys sanitary products etc

Sabotage all requests for information, doing it preemptively is better.

Do not keep any information that could be used to track the menstrual cycle of people. If you work at a grocery chain this should be brought up right away or just silently lost.

Also the cloud infra of basically everything might end up in the hands of a fascist regime so this would be a good time to delete everything you don’t need and encrypt the rest.

How can we use the skills we have to protect others, or to disseminate information? How can we sabotage? I need to print up the CIA handbook on subversive sabotage.

Ok, I’m less mad. I’m working my way through the stages of grief, though that doesn’t really work. What are the stages of anticipation of terror? Anyway… I’m getting there. We need to figure out what something like the Underground Railroad would look like today.

Norwegian newspapers going: What does this mean for us?
1. NATO is fucked
2. Ukraine is fucked
3. Palestine is fucked
4. Climate is fucked
Oh yeah, and your interest rate?
Yeah, that’s fucked too

When I was a teenager I was training to become a member of a search and rescue team. And our instructor in first aid drilled a thing into us, and since I still remember I guess he succeeded:
“What’s going to kill them first?”
The basic logic was that if they died none of the other stuff would matter. So you do stuff in that order: “What’s going to kill them first?”
And that’s how I feel about the American election and so many things. Focusing on this election isn’t communicating that certain other issues aren’t important. This is about making sure we’ll have the opportunity to have that debate/fight/whatever.
The goal isn’t only this election, the goal is (maybe even mainly) that there will be another election.
Because once the patient isn’t dying, suddenly all the other issues can be addressed.
